Spanish Plumes

Here is an excerpt from "Weather News" isssued by the Met Office and posted on the BBC News Website: which seeks to define the term "Spanish Plume".

1. What do our resident experts think?

2. In particular what is the significance of the 2 different "warm" air masses (one French and humid, the other Spanish and dry).

3. In addition would not the Spanish air mass undergo modification by picking up a fair amount of moisture over the Bay of Biscay [or is that sea journey too short to make an appreciable difference.

"A Spanish plume requires several key ingredients. Firstly, warm and humid air from France. Secondly, warm but drier air from Spain. The final ingredient is a cold front moving in from the Atlantic. The cold air aloft, behind the front, will destabilise the warm air already at the surface, setting the scene for thunderstorms. "
