I haven't actually been at home for most of today. I've only just got back. It was cold and frosty when we left and it is now mild and sunny and clear.

We went walking in the Brecon Beacons up Pen y Fan. It was sunny all the way up there until we arrived when it snowed and snowed and snowed itself silly for twenty minutes then it stopped. It was then dry, cloudy and windy until we reached the top where it was shut in and calm. At the top it was excessively cold with clearing cloud then all the way back it was sunny and quite warm in the sun.

At Storey Arms (the base of Pen y Fan) there was 10cm of snow, half way up there was about 40-50cm and at the very top I measured 125cm! People were skiing and snowboarding for heaven's sake. Winter at its best. Clear and sunny at home and 6.5C.

Snow melted in areas exposed to the sun, but there has been no appreciable thaw in the shade.

Strangely, while about half of the original snow cover is lying in the Montague Burton area, when I went up to Hyde Park (which was fully snow-covered when I left it at 10:30am) I found that almost all of the snow there had gone!

Almost cloudless but temperature falling only very slowly here, currently -0.6c. Wind still 13 mph W.

N.B earlier I mentioned that last night's min of -5.0c was equal to the lowest on record for March here, I should have said it was the coldest since 1987, the record is -6.2c in 1986.

Report for Saturday 4th March 2006, Readings taken at 23:55.

After a night with occasional snow showers the morning began with a clear sky and 1.5cm of lying snow. Cloud bubbled up giving the occasional snow shower, however by midday the snow had almost entirely melted. The afternoon and evening have since been mostly clear, though high-level cloud in the last hour or so has caused a rise in temperature. Overall it was exceptionally cold for the time of year, with the minima especially some 6°C below average.

Current Temp: 1.2°C

Max Temp: 5.0°C (at 14:22)

Min Temp: -3.2°C (at 07:42)

Humidity: 82%

Min Humidity: 51% (at 16:46)

Pressure: 999.0hPa (Steady)

Dewpoint: -1.6°C

Wind: WNW (9mph)

Rain Today: Trace

My March average currently stands at 1.1°C (-5.2°C Below the 1971-2000 average).
