For the Manchester area, the snow showers made it across the Pennines just before rush hour on the Friday morning and it caught out the gritters as the local Met Office didn't expect too much snow to make it across the Pennines. The local Met Office seems to nearly always underestimate the amount of snow we get in a notable easterly, here.

Snow showers fell from time to time but it was during the evening that some really beefy snow showers started hitting the area.

Suzanne Charlton did the main weather broadcasts that night and severe weather warnings were issued for NE England and the greater Manchester area for heavy snow.

Heavy snow showers fell throughout the night and the frequency increased as the night went on that it was effectively continuous snow by dawnbreak. Snow fell during the morning before clearing during the early afternoon leaving a very good covering of snow.

It was that long ago I added a sepia touch

In Cleadon, Tyne & Wear, the 26th January was a day of sunshine and snow showers, with a covering of about 4cm at 9am, and a little more than that by the end of the day.

The 27th was cloudy with continuous snow, but it was more wet than the previous day's snow, so we maintained a few centimetres of lying snow throughout the day. In the evening the snow turned to sleet and the covering started melting, and was completely gone by the next morning.

The records for Lancaster indicate that they only had a few light snow flurries on the 26th, with a less-than-half covering at 9am, but that continuous heavy snow penetrated over that part of the Pennines on the 27th producing a few centimetres of cover, quite impressive for an E'ly in that location.

I think it's safe to say that this was the most widespread snow event in January since I started taking weather records.

In Shrewsbury we had freezing rain on the night of 23rd-24th which left a layer of glaze, then a light snowcover on top of that by morning which left roads very treacherous- the best freezing rain event I've seen by a long way. Then on Friday 26th in the afternoon it snowed quite heavily for about 2 hours and left us with a covering of 5cm, which didn't start to melt until Monday 29th, and was still more than 50% cover till late on the 30th. Several days in this spell stayed below freezing and although January 1996 was a very dull month indeed, and for the first three weeks often mild as well, it still had this cold snap at the end which redeemed it.

PS Is this really ten years ago? :)

Whilst the synoptics look great, the upper air temperatures look no better than February 2005, did the easterly produce similar temperatures????

Temperatures were generally lower, with much of the south remaining below freezing.
