Hmm could be better, but could be alot worse too. At least we're not looking at an awful February 1990/98 scenario (for cold weather fans). They're probably being very cautious at this stage about any cold spells.

:)

what does the end of the peirod mean ???

The period for around the weekend of the 24th February I suppose.

UK Outlook for Saturday 17 Feb 2007 to Monday 26 Feb 2007:

A rather unsettled picture is likely to prevail, although with some interludes of clearer weather bringing sunny intervals and showers (the latter especially in the north and west). One of these brighter interludes looks likely to cross the UK through next weekend, although the clearer skies at night could also lead to patchy frost. Early next week, though, further spells of wet, windy and generally mild weather are likely to cross much of the UK. This unsettled theme looks like persisting through the rest of the period but with temperature levels become rather more problematical. Probably staying mild for the most part, especially towards the southwest but there is a risk of the weather turning colder again, with a risk of frost and snowfall, especially in the north and east.

Reminds me of our local radio weatherman Len B... "some places will be sunny and dry, whilst others will be overcast or wet... winds will be moderate to strong in most places except those where it will be light..."

I jest not!

UK Outlook for Sunday 18 Feb 2007 to Tuesday 27 Feb 2007:

A rather unsettled picture is likely to prevail, although with some interludes of clearer weather bringing sunny intervals and showers (the latter especially in the north and west). Many places temporarily becoming dry and bright on Sunday, although the clearer skies overnight could lead to early patchy frost across the north. However, further spells of wet, windy and generally mild weather are likely to cross much of the UK early next week. This unsettled theme looks like persisting through the rest of the period but with temperature levels becoming rather more problematical. Probably staying mild for the most part, especially towards the southwest, but there is a risk of the weather turning colder again, with a chance of frost and snowfall, especially in the north and east.

UK Outlook for Monday 19 Feb 2007 to Wednesday 28 Feb 2007:

A rather unsettled picture is expected to prevail, with spells of rain pushing east across the UK. Some of the rain will be heavy and persistent at times, particularly across the west and north. In between the spells of rain there will also be interludes of clearer weather bringing sunny intervals and showers (the latter especially in the north and west), these wintry on occasion across the high ground of the north. The sheltered south and east look best placed to see any prolonged drier, brighter weather. Temperature levels will be mild for the most part, especially towards the southwest, but there is a low risk of the weather turning colder again later, with a chance of frost, especially in the north and east.

Still 30% today:

UK Outlook for Wednesday 21 Feb 2007 to Friday 2 Mar 2007:

A rather unsettled and occasionally very windy picture is expected to prevail for the most part, with spells of rain pushing east and north across the UK. Some of the rain will be heavy and persistent at times, more particularly in the west and north. There will also be interludes of brighter, showery weather. The sheltered south and east look best placed to see any more lengthy drier spells. It will be mild for the most part, especially towards the west and southwest. However there is about a 30 per cent risk of the weather turning much colder and drier mid to late next week, with widespread frost and perhaps some snow, especially for the north and east. However, any such cold spell would probably only last a few days.

This is a little confusing as it talks about later in the week, but which week I would assume they mean the end of next week. Given the latest fax charts theres a small chance of some of that colder air affecting the far ne but it would be a major surprise for any of that colder air to affect anywhere else. And given the latest ecm ensembles which look awful its the smallest of chances. I suppose they're just factoring in the difficulties with that arctic high and exactly what it does once it finally enters the scene over scandanavia.
