It has been a very cold winter across parts of Central and Eastern Europe:

Moscow for instance recorded a negative 2.45C anomaly over the past 90 days.

Berlin also recorded a negative 1.8C anomaly for the last 90 days:

Moscow is having a real blowtorch of a winter so far. They must be smashing all sorts of records over there! Wasn't it only two years ago that they set their then record January temperature of just above freezing? Looking at recent temps and forecasts, it looks like being quite normal this year.

The mosquito problem in St Petersburg this year will probably be horrendous!

I think this is a good topic to get a rebirth and I've got some charts courtesy of Koln University that might prove of some relevance as we track temperatures on the continent. It gives isotherms, isobars and significant weather and is quite a nice little plaything that updates 6 hours every day. Remember to read the key at the bottom and enjoy :)

Colder air filtering further South on the East of the Euro High into Far Eastern Europe courtesy of that LP system to its ESE.

Yes, high pressure moving steadily southwards and that trough should move into the Ukraine and Turkey to give a pulse of cold air into the balkans. Hopefully we could lock in some cold air throughout the rest of the month. First arctic blast to hit scandi as that pv is disjointed by sunday/monday so will be interesting to view!

The present pattern does seem awfully stuck just now.

Have to say it won't be long before winds from the SE or even South have a distinctly cold edge to them here.

This is a useful page to check near live temperatures around the Arctic and Western Russia

Only Scandinavia and Northern Europe seem on the mild side now.

6am isotherms and isobars around europe (generally the low temperatures occur around 6-8am in Europe in late November), sorry about not updating, I lost track for a bit, and then the site crashed/went under maintenance.

Here you go:

Northern Europe- colder air due to the lp digging into s scandi with much colder air associated with it's northern flank, rain, sleet and snow for much of southern norway, southern sweden, the baltic states and much of finland and denmark... it turns increasingly to snow on higher ground and the further north it goes, and so much of northern scandi has yet more snow from the south-east. Some snow around Iceland with temperatures hovering around 0c.

Western Europe- strong westerlies with temperatures holding out in the late noughts, heavy rain across britain and ireland with decreasing air pressure, more benign in france and the low countries.

Central Europe- generally very wet, especially across southern germany, the alpine states, slovenia, czech republic and slovakia. Heavy snow on higher ground with temperatures just above freezing.

Southern Europe- generally hazy and bright, especially across italy, with temperatures usually in the early-mid teens, apart from the cooler conditions in northern italy. A light north to west flow with very little precipitation and low pressure activity... the balkans and se europe are also rather hazy with temperatures around 10c.

Eastern Europe- A continued hazy theme across Belarus and Ukraine, turning increasingly wet as we approach russia... temperatures cool significantly as the atlantic pattern faces the cold south and east winds, with more heavy snow in the areas around nw/n russia.
