WEATHER ALERT

Category: Level 3 Warning

Weather type: Thunderstorms and Torrential Downpours

Affecting: England, Wales and Southern Scotland

Time and Date Valid For: 12.00noon Saturday 18th June - 23.59 Sunday 19th June 2005.

Time Of Issue: 20.25 Friday 17th June

A hot and humid weekend lies ahead for many parts thanks to high pressure to our east and a slack Southerly flow. As this area of high pressure begins to slip eastwards and away from the UK, pressure will begin to fall. In addition, a cold front associated with an Atlantic low will begin to move eastwards later in the weekend.

This transition could well cause thunderstorms to develop as early as Saturday afternoon across parts of North Wales, Northwest England, and into Central and Southern areas of Scotland. Generally only isolated storms are currently expected to develop, but those that do could well be very heavy with torrential rain and hail a possibility along with gusty winds. Current model indications show potential rainfall totals of over 30mm/hour so there is the scope for some torrential downpours and flash flooding in places.

Risk map for Saturday

On Sunday as the cold front begins to move in from from the west then there looks to be a risk of more widespread storms developing as we go through the day, especially as temperatures soar to over 30C in the east. Main areas at risk of seeing some severe storm activity on Sunday include Wales, Northern England, the Midlands and later on in the day Eastern England. Once again, torrential downpours giving flash flooding, hail and gusty winds are likely around these storms.

Monday sees a risk of further storms in the southeast, but this will be looked at further during the weekend.
