The Headingley Test match is looking in danger of producing a washout day. Thats providing its not over in 2 days as it was in 2000 ;)

Looks highly likely now. It would be the first washout day since Old Trafford in August 2004.

Indeed we have a washout. I think it just shows how good the drainage and covering systems are at most grounds these days. Heavy rain in summer isn't uncommon, even for much of the day.

Looks a dead cert for the 1st day at Chester-Le-Street to be a washout tomorrow.

I wouldn't bet against the 2nd day being likewise either.

How is it defined though? It should be whilst play is commencing.

I have to disagree there. You could have a cold start at 11am but the temperature gets up to 15C in the afternoon. Similarly you could start play in August at 21C and the temp reaches 27C by afternoon, would that be a hotter day than one which starts at 19C but climbs to 31C?

Surely it has to be judged by the maximum recorded on that day.

But 7 days of Test cricket washed out in year 1954 alone? Oh dear that's bad!

I bet Lock and Laker enjoyed themselves that season.

No full days of play were lost at Lords, but the 1st day at Trent Bridge (today) could see a 'dry day washout' due to the sodden outfield. If that proves to be the case, and I do realise how much rain has fallen right up to yesterday evening, maybe there should be a push from the authorities to have all test match grounds resurfaced, as at Lords, with sand-based drainage system.

Lords, last Friday, was under water at 12.30 and they were playing before 14.00!

Tomorrow is the first Test Match day of this summer and there is a chance of it being washed out, although the latest forecast suggests thundery rain will clear North of London by early afternoon.

This reminds me of the situation at Lords last year on 20 July against India when the ground was flooded at midday after a storm, but they were playing by 14.00 thanks to the excellent new drainage system. That drainage system could be beneficial tomorrow.
