Another cold spell of weather is expected to affect the UK as we go towards this coming weekend. Cold north/northwesterly winds will move south across the UK as low pressure to the northeast of the UK develops and slowly drifts southwards, whilst high pressure sits to the west and northwest of the country.

A band of rain will move south on Friday associated with a cold front bringing this change to colder weather. Sunshine and showers will follow into northern areas, with the showers becoming increasingly wintry over Scotland by nightfall.

During Friday night, showers will turn wintry in many other northern and western parts, being blown in on fresh to strong north/northwesterly winds. In northern and eastern Scotland, more persistant sleet and snow may develop, leading to accumulations. With winds here gusting to gale force at times, blizzard like conditions are likely, along with drifting of any lying snow.

On Saturday, many areas exposed to the north/northwesterly winds will see further wintry showers, with a mixture of rain, hail, sleet and snow all possible. Some of the heaviest showers may even be thundery. Once again, more persistant sleet and snow may affect northern and eastern Scotland, giving accumulations.

Very little change is expected on Sunday, with further wintry showers developing, especially around windward coasts, but also in some inland areas as well, with the sun gaining more power and setting off convective showers.

This has alert has been updated, but you will see there are no major changes from the original alert yesterday.

It is still too soon to forecast possible snowfall amounts and as things stand at the moment, we see no reason to change the alert at this stage.
