Weather Alert

Category: Level 2 Warning

Weather type: Snow and Ice

Affecting: All of the UK

Time and Date Valid For: 18:00 Tuesday 22nd February - 18:00 Wednesday 23rd February 2005.

Time Of Issue: 17.45 Tuesday 22nd February 2005.

Further snow showers are expected to affect many parts of the UK tonight, especially in eastern areas. The showers are expected to become more widespread and heavier over SE England this evening. Local accumulations in the region of 2-5cm's are likely in some areas, but perhaps as much as 10cm over higher ground.

As always with this type of situation, some areas will escape the snow showers and remain dry, whilst others may catch a fair number of showers.

All parts can expect a penetrating frost tonight, with ice becoming an additional hazard where snow falls or where snowmelt has occured today.

Further snow showers are likely during tomorrow (Wednesday), and are expected to be rather more widespread and heavier than today (Tuesday), particularly in the east again, giving local accumulations. Temperatures are expected to be a degree or two colder therefore snowmelt may not occur as quickly and any snow may settle more readily.

Another update will be issued tomorrow evening for Thursday. If necessary Flash Alerts may be issued for particular areas.

Confidence Level: 80%

Note: This alert should be considered a guide and we strongly recommend you stay tuned to the Met-Office for further warnings and updates.
