Weather Alert

Category: Level 3 Warning

Weather type: Snow and Strong Winds

Affecting: Northern and Eastern Scotland, Northern Isles, Orkney and Shetland.

Time and Date Valid For: 18.00 Saturday 12th February - 09.00 Tuesday 15th January 2005

Time Of Issue: 20.10 Thursday 10th February 2005.

A spell of wet and windy weather is expected to cross much of the country during Friday, Friday night and into early Sunday.

Following in its wake will be a run of strong and increasingly cold north/northwesterly winds. These winds will bring frequent and heavy showers to many northern parts during Saturday. These showers are expected to turn increasingly wintry during the day, and by nightfall significant falls of snow are likely over the Scottish hills.

During the early hours of Sunday, winds over northeast Scotland will increase to gale force, with gusts of between 50 and 60MPH possible. This will bring the risk of minor damage to trees and buildings, and will cause hazardous driving conditions, especially in any associated snow showers.

By Sunday, wintry showers are likely in many northern and eastern areas along with strong north/northwesterly winds. Snowfall will be a feature, particularly so in northeast Scotland and over the hills.

There is a chance on Sunday that embedded troughs could enhance the shower activity and increase the risk of snowfall in other eastern areas. We will keep a watch on this and if necessary will issue any necessary alerts nearer the time.

Further wintry showers are likely in eastern areas early next week, before less cold weather moves in from the west, which could give some wintry conditions on its forward edge for a time.

Many parts of the UK can expect to see a frost on Sunday and Monday nights.

This alert will be updated as and when is necessary.

Confidence Level: 70%

Note: This alert should be considered a guide and we strongly recommend you stay tuned to the Met-Office for further warnings and updates.
