Weather Alert

Category: Level 2 Warning

Weather type: Heavy Rain and Severe Gales

Affecting: Scotland, Northern Ireland, Northwest England and North Wales

Time and Date Valid For: 12.00 noon Tuesday 11th January - 12.00 noon Wednesday 12th January 2005

Time Of Issue: 18.25 Monday 10th January 2005.

Another stormy spell of weather is expected across northern and western parts of the UK during Tuesday and Wednesday. A very deep area of low pressure is expected to pass close to northwest Ireland and Scotland during Tuesday and into Tuesday night before moving away from the Northern Isles during Wednesday.

Wind speeds will increase throughout Tuesday across many areas and coastal southwesterly gales with gusts of up to 60MPH are likely across western coasts during daylight hours. The worse of the winds are expected to hit northwestern areas during Tuesday evening and night, with severe gale to storm force westerlies expected in northern and western parts of Northern Ireland and in northern and western Scotland, along with the Western and Northern Isles. Mean wind speeds of 50-70MPH are quite likely in these areas, with gusts of 80-100MPH probable. Further south, winds are expected to gust to between 50 and 60MPH, especially so over Northern England.

With winds of these speeds expected, damage can be expected to buildings, trees being uprooted and driving conditions will become very dangerous with high sided vehicles at risk of being blown over.

In addition to these severe winds, another spell of heavy rain is set to sweep across all areas, with those parts already particularly badly affected by flooding likely to be hit hard again. Up to 75mm (3 inches) of rain may fall over hillier western areas, leading to a renewed risk of flooding.

This alert will be updated as and when is necessary.

Confidence Level: 70%

Note: This alert should be considered a guide and we strongly recommend you stay tuned to the Met-Office for further warnings and updates.

Weather Alert UPDATE

Category: Level 2 Warning

Weather type:Severe gales and heavy showers & blizzards

Affecting: Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Northern England

Time and Date Valid For: Until 12.00 Wednesday 12th January 2005

Time Of Issue: 09.00 Wednesday 11th January 2005.

The area low pressure that bought winds of 100mph plus to parts of Scotland last night is now moving away but with a steep pressure gradient to its south there is still potential for gusts of wind of up to 90mph in Northern Scotland, to 80mph in other parts of Scotland and to 70mph in Northern England..

A large number of showers are circulating into the West side of Scotland and northern England from the depression and these will be blown inland by the strong winds, levels above 150m the showers are likely to be of snow, meaning blizzard conditions. The highest wind gusts will be during any showers.

Obviously conditions remains hazardous, and there is still a danger of trees being uprooted, damage to buildings etc. Please only venture out if you must.

This alert will be updated as and when is necessary.
