I was having a scour of newspaper archives the other day & found mentions of a 'whirlwind' that struck Herne Bay just after 2 pm. It seems to follow the normal SW to NE track typical of UK tornadoes, spanning over 3 miles in just under 3 minutes. Newspapers from London Daily News & the local Whitstable Times & Herne Bay Herald both describe the events of the day with a 'brief period of darkness' with residents reporting a 'noise like thunder' before fences were levelled, trees were blown over & windows were blown in. I had not heard anything like this before & I'm shocked I haven't considering the damage & extremity of it with the wind was estimated to be 'blowing at the rate of over a hundred miles an hour.' The long track of this as well as the roaring noise typical of tornadoes suggests that this was no straight line winds & a tornado, probably spawned off an embedded thunderstorm along the cold front arriving that afternoon. I have plotted a rough estimated track of the tornado based on a 1906 map of the town with notable points such as a farm nearby the station being hit & Beltinge sustaining damage as good indication points: I have not been able to find any more details on how wide the tornado was or any pictures of any damage. I believe the track on that map comes just over the 3 mile mark but I cannot be sure. I'd estimate it to be around a T3 tornado. Reanalysis of the day from 12:00 UTC does show colder air arriving from the NW going from 8c 850hpa temps to below 0c 850hPa temps.

Today marks the 20th anniversary of the May 3rd 1999 Oklahoma tornado outbreak that took 40 lives, the highest wind speed ever recorded and a significant portion of it was broadcast live most likely saving 10's if not 100's of lives. Oklahoma 1999 Tornado Outbreak.

Hi, I went out to America with Netweather this year for the Storm Chase on Tour 1 and got some amazing shots. I found the camera I had (Fuji S2950) with me, a bit difficult to use for the type of photography. It doesn't have much offering for long exposure, and it was very much a guessing game as to whether I caught lightning on it. As well, photography under the storms where its quite dark, didn't really come out brilliantly. I wasn't able to catch the colours that I was actually seeing, in the pictures. I have a budget for a new camera before I go out to America next May, and am asking for suggestions for a new camera, that is really geared towards photography of storms and landscapes. I guess these are my most important requirements:- Camera that has good feedback for learning to capture lightning with Generally good at capturing colours in storms well in darker surroundings (under storms) Long exposure (longer the better) Panoramic photography would be beneficial. My current camera is a bridge camera, and I am open towards suggestions of bridge cameras again or cameras with separate lenses. Budget is upto £500-£600 if the camera is a good one. Any suggestions for cameras that are currently used for similar activities would be massively appreciated. Cheers, Mike.

Hello fellow weather enthusiasts I have an odd sighting at the region of Ghent in Belgium. I saw what appeared to be a funnel cloud near the inflow bands of a forming thunderstorm. Am I correct in assuming this?

29 May 2012, 'Mothership' supercell, OK
Cammie Czuchnicki posted a gallery image in Member's Gallery
From the album: Weather Studios
The supercell storm near Piedmont, Oklahoma, that we'd been tracking from initiation, took on the form of the foreboding 'mothership' structure. Tried as it might, the storm seemed just fractionally too high to produce a tornado, but the mobile tornado sirens were issued just in case.© Weather Studios
