  1. Professor Munro the ex-Chair of an independent expert group thinks not https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-49611457
  2. Not sure whether this belongs here or in the "Serious Discussion" area, but let's put it here for now. This prompted me to start the thread: http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-birmingham-34759939 Erm, fireworks are based around enough of an explosion to propel and ignite their contents...explosions powerful enough to do this tend to make a bit of noise!
  3. If yes how many would also need to become vegan (vegetarian) to compensate for a dirty Chinese power plant?
  4. What do people make of the stories about Jimmy Saville and that ITV are broadcasting a documentary on them? http://www.itv.com/news/2012-09-30/bbc-jimmy-savile-accused-of-sexually-abusing-girls-in-itv-exposure-documentary/ Esther Rantzen believes them to be true http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2210592/Jimmy-Savile-accused-sexual-predator-women-claim-abused-underage-schoolgirls.html If true then it is truly shocking and that it has been ignored for so long. If not true why try and besmirch a man who can not defend himself?
  5. This week marks the 50th anniversary of the death of John Fitzgerald Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States. What was his political legacy? Would he have won re-election in 1964? Which were his greatest speeches? And - inevitably - do you believe Oswald was his assassin that fateful day in Dallas? Incidentally, I'd be fascinated if any of our older members can share their recollections of hearing of his death (like 9/11, it has always been said that people can always remember what they were doing when they heard the news). Bish
  6. I mean the 1st real one. Do you still think of yours? Did you ever try and rekindle that first relationship, and did it work? Do you know where your first love is, do you follow from a distance or do you look up and wonder where he/she is and how they are doing? Do you look back and cringe or do you look back with fondness or maybe even both. Do you still hold a candle for them?
  7. Its mental health Awareness week. With Millions affected by mental health issues daily should this be classed as a national emergency? Should unlimited funds be invested into this problem?. Or is it down the person themselves?. Have we lost the ability to be resilient and has it become easy to blame some one else and expect other people to help. Discuss.
  8. Many years ago Roald Dahl’s seven year old daughter died of complications from measles , for which at the time there was no vaccination. Many years later, once a vaccine was widely available, he wrote a plea for parents to protect their children, raging at the “obstinacy, ignorance and fear” that drove anti-vaccine sentiment. . Decades later we now appear to be going down the same route of “obstinacy, ignorance and fear,” started many moons ago by that quack Wakefield, and now driven by the gold mine of misinformation, social media. Wakefield, who is now living the high life in the States, was responsible for god knows how many measle related deaths, and even though his pathetic theories were totally destroyed by the scientific community, his legacy is now being revived by the morons and social media It is pathetic, but more to the point it is dangerous, and more children will die because of these nutters, The vaccination take up is already down to 87 per cent which is way below the herd immunity 93-95 per cent https://www.healthline.com/health-news/measles-cases-are-rising#1
  9. I thought this may interest some and looking back there does not seem to be a thread on WWII. Truly a marvellous find . http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/world-us-canada-40991326
  10. This is baffling. Still no confirmed wreckage, it is believed it was turning round when it disappeared, two passengers believed to be on board with stolen passports.
  11. For the consumer this might be a good thing (if it ever gets passed on). http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-30247276 Basically the US through Shale Gas is responsible. This does not help us a lot and you have super major oil companies in Europe like Statoil and Total could seriously go to the wall, because their break even costs were $90-$115 a barrel. This is more due to drilling and appraisal costs. The contractors offering oilfield services have lined their pockets as much as the oil majors were prepared to pay. In the past OPEC have done something to regulate it - but out of their hands now - because the biggest consumer is self sufficient. It is a global energy crisis in the making. Whether that is an advert for Shale Gas and self sufficiency in Europe is another question. The majority of oil companies had pinned $80-$90 as a steady price (Brent Crude say). And it has all gone tits up. This is not a good thing.
  12. Horrific seeing Notre Dame Cathedral on fire. The historical loss is incalculable, I hope there are no humans costs.
  13. Violence seems to be escalating again this morning. I suspect that many here in the UK are bemused at the lengths that some will go to get into the EU!! Seems to be dangerously polarising the Ukraine with the east siding with Russia and the "old guard" while those in the western areas and many of the young look towards the European Union. Russia's foreign minister says that the violent clashes are out of control and being stirred up by western politicians. I worry about where this is going..... http://www.ryot.org/watch-live-stream-protests-ukraine http://espreso.tv/ .......and apart from the protests and just for the coldies, just look at all the snow falling in this live footage!!(as of Wed 22 Jan)
  14. Horrific scenes in west London, with a tower block ablazed. A number of fatalities and injuries have been reported.
  15. Awful news coming in of a suspected terrorism attack at the Manchester Evening news Arena.Latest reports from police say 19 people have been killed and 59 injured. RIP to all C.S.
