1. Now that we're entering the full swing of the melt season, I thought it would be time for the first sea ice minimum poll of 2015. (Most ice info used here is based on the daily NSIDC daily sea ice extent data, unless otherwise stated). We've just come out of a very mild, though not exceptionally so, winter which saw the lowest sea ice maximum on record by most area and extent measures. 925hPa temps north of 70N ......... ............. .............. Maximum Sea Ice Extent The early part of the melt season has seen temperatures well above average across most of the Arctic, with sea ice extent generally in the bottom 3 on record, with the daily value of 12,531,000km2 being the 2nd lowest for May 16th (most recent). On the other hand, sea ice volume has continued to slowly grow from the minimum in 2012, with April 2015 the 7th smallest volume on record. There is a long way to go this melt season, but the forecast for the near term shows things warming up across much of the Arctic with temperatures climbing well above freezing, especially across the Pacific side, around the Beaufort/Chukchi regions, so a good chance of an accelerated melt period over the next 7 days. After that, who knows? (Votes are set to private, for anyone concerned about that)
2. If I'm honest, June 2012 was by far the worst summer month of recent years, and probably one of the most miserable months in general. It was the wettest June on record and was also a very cool June, with low daytime maximas. The CET came out at 13.5C, which is 0.6C below the 1961-90 average. This was only held up by the higher than average minimas. It was also remarkably dull.

4. Yes I know it's only mid-April, but I think it's a good time to start asking "what do you want for summer" as late April and May can often be quite summery. You can select more than one option in the poll, just in case you want a few weather types. For example, I chosen heatwaves and thunderstorms - 'cause let's face it, it's what a summer should be!
5. I was just thinking and i have never really looked up about it but is there anyway to predict a hot summer? it will be nice !! love the summer and im getting bored of this winter already.
6. I was just thinking about my favourite season and why, and was wondering on other peoples opinions. Mine is Winter!

10. We need to move with the times so i thought it was time to start discussion about Summer. The Winter thread was onto part 3 in early October so my thoughts are now turning towards what Summer might deliver this year. Hopefully plenty of heat, high pressure and thundery plumes.

Please use this thread for your regional discussions about the current weather or what is being forecast for the next few days in this region, or anything else remotely weather related that takes your fancy really...enjoy link to the previous one here... http://forum.netweather.tv/topic/76698-south-east-east-anglia-regional-discussion-21st-may-2013-onwards/page-40
16. Our summer forecast is now available with a traditional British summer mix expected this year. View it here: http://www.netweather.tv/index.cgi?action=summer-forecast-2012;sess=
17. Anybody else experiencing a very dry summer in the midlands or anywhere else? River levels are very low in parts and the countryside looks distressed in parts with the usually green lush warwickshire countryside looking brown and parched in parts, the ground is rock hard with cracks seen in fields of crops, gardeners have commented they really want some rain for their flowers/plants, hopefully some much needed rainfall for tomorrow for us and on sunday/monday though it wont really make it for the lack of rain this summer in the midlands.
18. No this isn't an entry about the fall of social taboos! In fact I am talking about fahrenheit! This week parts of the north-east will experience temperatures in the mid 60s fahrenheit (17-19c). It doesn't sound impressive, but bear in mind temperatures have struggled to get past 12c during the last few weeks, and the brisk northerly winds have made it feel like February! Happily the weather improves this week, and although those of us on the east coast will see more cloud and lower temperatures, it will nontheless be a substantial improvement. What happens after this weeks warmth is anyones guess, but a return to the cold dross we have seen for most of May looks unlikely, thankfully. On to sport, and a big congratulations to York City for their play-off win over Luton Town yesterday. York now return to the football league after an 8-year absence, and while you have to feel sorry for poor ol' Luton, it is terrific to see York back where they belong. Plenty of golf action occured yesterday, with the booming Belgian Nicolas Colsaerts beating Graeme McDowell in the Volvo Matchplay Final. Colsaerts takes home his biggest paycheque to date and moves to just outside the top 30 in the world rankings. Meanwhile, Jason Dufner won the corresponding PGA Tour event in Americaland. On a wildlife note, it has been more than a little disappointing on the insect front. I still haven't seen one damselfly or dragonfly adult yet, and although I did see a few butterflies around during late March and early April, the first (and in some cases only) generations on the wing have really suffered in the brutal weather. Happily, birdlife hasn't suffered too much, with plenty of swallows, swifts, house and sand martins about - great to see! That's all from me for now, thanks for reading
19. I hope that this summer will be a hot one but at the moment i have not got a clue which april has started okay today but will soon be crap, i want this year to be a great for t storms and funnels, has any got any info on what this summer will be like?.
20. As promised, we have reviewed the 2011 summer forecast to examine where it went wrong, and also where it went right - you can watch the video here: http://www.netweather.tv/index.cgi?action=summer-review-2011;sess=
21. A couple of long range forecast related items to talk about today, as we've released our winter preview and also our summer review... Summer Starting with the summer review, we know that our long range summer forecast didn't go to plan this year but we've never hidden away from that fact. We made an early announcement to let people know that it wasn't going to be as expected way back in June, and following on from that always intended to closely review the summer patterns to see what we could learn from the forecast. As part of that we wanted to share our findings with you all, so Stewart Rampling (our long range forecaster) has put together a video reviewing how the summer panned out overall, and looking at where the forecast went wrong, along with some of the areas it actually went right. You can view the video here: http://www.netweathe...view-2011;sess= Winter Moving on, we're now closing in on Winter and although there's been a lot of hype about snow, the next ice age, months of sub-zero temperatures and so on - the truth of the matter is that at this stage it's too early to know what will happen from December to February. Our normal long range forecast (updated monthly) covers the next few months, but our full Winter forecast won't be issued until later in November. There are some early indicators that can be looked into at this point though, and this is why Stewart has produced his Winter preview - this isn't a forecast but does look ahead to winter, and Stewart gives his early thoughts on some of the factors he thinks may shape the UK's winter weather this year. You can watch the video here: http://www.netweathe...ghts-2011;sess= That's about it for this blog entry - we'll be re-opening the winter area on the site on the 1st November, with (among other things) the return of the Santa Shaker in our Christmas forecast. More on this over the next few days though.. Paul
