This is similar to my "Summer vs. Winter" poll I did a few weeks back, but this one has a few differences. You can now choose between any season and also tell us all which one you hate. Why make this thread? - Well why not! My favourite season is quite a difficult choice between Spring and Summer, but I think Summer does just come out a bit farther ahead. This is because I like the feeling of being warm and having long days to do what you want with. I also like the powerful thunderstorms that Summer creates. Spring however does bring quite varied weather, like the possibility of a March snowfall and an early arrival of Summer in May, but as said, I think I prefer Summer slightly more. My least favourite season would definately be Autumn. I absolutely hate Autumn! The only thing I like about it is how beautiful the trees can look but that is about it. September is the only decent month with the other two simply being a mix of horrible wet and windy weather. It is also too cold and too dark to now enjoy the sun and warmth and it's too mild for snow. You're also watching everything die and rot, especially in October and November. Autumn is just depressing in my opinion and that's why I hate it!

Yes I know it's only mid-April, but I think it's a good time to start asking "what do you want for summer" as late April and May can often be quite summery. You can select more than one option in the poll, just in case you want a few weather types. For example, I chosen heatwaves and thunderstorms - 'cause let's face it, it's what a summer should be!

We need to move with the times so i thought it was time to start discussion about Summer. The Winter thread was onto part 3 in early October so my thoughts are now turning towards what Summer might deliver this year. Hopefully plenty of heat, high pressure and thundery plumes.

No this isn't an entry about the fall of social taboos! In fact I am talking about fahrenheit! This week parts of the north-east will experience temperatures in the mid 60s fahrenheit (17-19c). It doesn't sound impressive, but bear in mind temperatures have struggled to get past 12c during the last few weeks, and the brisk northerly winds have made it feel like February! Happily the weather improves this week, and although those of us on the east coast will see more cloud and lower temperatures, it will nontheless be a substantial improvement. What happens after this weeks warmth is anyones guess, but a return to the cold dross we have seen for most of May looks unlikely, thankfully. On to sport, and a big congratulations to York City for their play-off win over Luton Town yesterday. York now return to the football league after an 8-year absence, and while you have to feel sorry for poor ol' Luton, it is terrific to see York back where they belong. Plenty of golf action occured yesterday, with the booming Belgian Nicolas Colsaerts beating Graeme McDowell in the Volvo Matchplay Final. Colsaerts takes home his biggest paycheque to date and moves to just outside the top 30 in the world rankings. Meanwhile, Jason Dufner won the corresponding PGA Tour event in Americaland. On a wildlife note, it has been more than a little disappointing on the insect front. I still haven't seen one damselfly or dragonfly adult yet, and although I did see a few butterflies around during late March and early April, the first (and in some cases only) generations on the wing have really suffered in the brutal weather. Happily, birdlife hasn't suffered too much, with plenty of swallows, swifts, house and sand martins about - great to see! That's all from me for now, thanks for reading

A couple of long range forecast related items to talk about today, as we've released our winter preview and also our summer review... Summer Starting with the summer review, we know that our long range summer forecast didn't go to plan this year but we've never hidden away from that fact. We made an early announcement to let people know that it wasn't going to be as expected way back in June, and following on from that always intended to closely review the summer patterns to see what we could learn from the forecast. As part of that we wanted to share our findings with you all, so Stewart Rampling (our long range forecaster) has put together a video reviewing how the summer panned out overall, and looking at where the forecast went wrong, along with some of the areas it actually went right. You can view the video here: http://www.netweathe...view-2011;sess= Winter Moving on, we're now closing in on Winter and although there's been a lot of hype about snow, the next ice age, months of sub-zero temperatures and so on - the truth of the matter is that at this stage it's too early to know what will happen from December to February. Our normal long range forecast (updated monthly) covers the next few months, but our full Winter forecast won't be issued until later in November. There are some early indicators that can be looked into at this point though, and this is why Stewart has produced his Winter preview - this isn't a forecast but does look ahead to winter, and Stewart gives his early thoughts on some of the factors he thinks may shape the UK's winter weather this year. You can watch the video here: http://www.netweathe...ghts-2011;sess= That's about it for this blog entry - we'll be re-opening the winter area on the site on the 1st November, with (among other things) the return of the Santa Shaker in our Christmas forecast. More on this over the next few days though.. Paul

Anybody else experiencing a very dry summer in the midlands or anywhere else? River levels are very low in parts and the countryside looks distressed in parts with the usually green lush warwickshire countryside looking brown and parched in parts, the ground is rock hard with cracks seen in fields of crops, gardeners have commented they really want some rain for their flowers/plants, hopefully some much needed rainfall for tomorrow for us and on sunday/monday though it wont really make it for the lack of rain this summer in the midlands.
