  1. A good month bar this past week which has been cool and gloomy. Nothing exceptional temperature wise, but great to have a period of sun and warmth. I lower my mark a bit, because the past few summers have tainted our expectations somewhat to be lower than they should be. 7/10
  2. I'm sorry but I just can't understand why anyone would want darkness and cold... fair enough to those who don't like heat (I would hardly call average temps for most of the UK in summer 'heat' though) but how do people enjoy sitting inside with darkness at 4:30pm...? I prefer summer where it is actually light and I can go outside and socialize
  3. Places in northern USA and Russia at 50 degrees north have reached 45C before.. I think it is possible, just more unlikely given our unfortunate position at the end of a massive ocean
  4. Yes also given the fact that we have reached 30C in early October before, and the mid-high 20s well into October just goes to show that you can still get some decent heat late on in the year.
  5. Highs temperatures all summer ranging from 24C-40C Low temperatures ranging from 14C-22C UV indexes of 11 around June-July, down to 9 in May and August for some good tanning No cloud/rain apart from thunderstorms
  6. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%C3%A1laga Pretty much this..
  7. I find that it only gets uncomfortable to sleep above 18C, but even then i'm used to it with recent weeks and I can sleep absolutely fine at 18/19C now. Last night felt quite fresh at 18C compared to Monday night when we had a low of 21C Britain has a good climate for people who like lots of variability (I would say the southern half though, as Scotland and most of Ireland just have non existent summers. When people say that Britain has the best climate in the world I can't help but think they are just saying that because they live here.. I don't mind the climate here bar a few things, but there are many places I would rather live for the climate than here: Nice/Marseille - warm summers, 2500 hours of sunshine annually with mild winters. No oppressive heat with 30C+ temps quite rare in summer. Melbourne - Wild temperature changes in summer - Can be 40C one day and then 20C the next. Sydney - Pleasant winters and warm summers, also higher UV all year round which means I won't be looking like a lump of mozzarella in January I wouldn't like to live anywhere like Scandinavia or Russia where the summers are actually just as dodgy as they are here, but with longer winters and colder transitional seasons. I am not a massive winter fan and although I like snow, months on end of the stuff would get annoying. Likewise I wouldn't want to live anywhere with a desert or tropical climate. Places like Cairo, Dubai, etc. A perfect climate for me would probably be one similar to the Canary Islands. Low latitude, warm and pleasant winters with warm summers without ever getting too hot
  8. If I had to stay there then I just don't think I could handle it! If it was for a couple of years I might just about be able to survive
  9. Lerwick must be one of the worst climates in the world.. I wouldn't move there if someone gave me £10million to do it. 1000 hours of sun a year (Even I find 1700 too low) and temperatures never going above 20C would be hell for me.. like constant November (which is probably my most hated month weatherwise). I can't imagine why anyone would like such a climate.. but each to their own I guess! I prefer sunny, warm-hot days with warm nights so that evening activities can be pursued in shorts and a T-shirt. Therefore I would like the percentage of days to be distributed like this in my ideal summer: Max temperature: 0% <21C (Cool) 25% 21-24C (average) 50% 24-28C (warm/very warm) 25% 28C + (hot) Evenings: 0% <13C (Cool) 20% 13-16C (average) 60% 16-19C (warm) <--------- Best temperature for evening activities 20% 19C + (very warm) The biggest priority is sun. I would take 23C and sunny over 28C and cloudy. In fact that is probably the one thing I would change about our climate. I would prefer to have about 2,500 hours of sun each year distributed like the Mediterranean e.g at least 100 hours in the winter months instead of 50 and above 300 hours in the summer months
  10. No I said that Septembers here are the same or warmer on average than Scotland is in July with an average high of almost 20C.. that's still pretty summerlike for me but of course the second half of September can be changeable. The first half generally is still warm though, at that point it is too early for cool air to reach us.
  11. Summer in Scotland doesn't exist.. lol. I would agree with the post above though, summer for me is the period when I can say for sure that it will at least be warm. For example I class September as more of a summer month down here, it's usually quite a calm and warm month for as long as I can remember, at least until mid month anyway. Septembers in the south are warmer than July up in most of Scotland so this is another reason why I would class it unofficially as a summer month. May tends to be a funny month.. although I usually class it as a summer month as well but it is not always the case, at the start of the month we are still prone to temperatures of 12C from time to time, such as 2 years ago which was very unpleasantly with easterly winds I remember! From mid month onwards though sub 15C temperatures are very rare and it is normally pleasant enough to call it summer. Added of course to the long daylight hours
  12. I'll go for an 18.2 And just for the extra measure, seeing as the average August here is about 18.8 i'll go for 20.5 here. Possibly the first good August in a while?
  13. This is the first time i've been uncomfortably hot since 2006. Since then we've had a fair few 32/33C days, but the extra couple of degrees added to the humidity is making this feel like a scorcher!
  14. the thermometer in the shade in my garden is reading 36.5C.. i'm pretty sure that's a couple of degrees too warm, but either way it does feel absolutely baking out there right now! A tiny bit of low level cloud perhaps stopping us going up another degree
  15. It doesn't actually feel that hot at the moment, although I was outside and I was sweating a lot.. we just hit 34C in my back garden so that beats the 33C we reached in June 2011, although this isn't official i'm pretty sure Heathrow/somewhere near has hit 34C now? Clouds have just appeared though, maybe 35C might be possible but it depends really if these clouds move. Only about 3 degrees from the record July max!
  16. Just hit 28C here, I reckon we will get 33C here, somewhere around this corridor might hit 34C later though. BBC has a forecast low of 23C here, that would be warmer than most places in Scotland will be during the day today lol There is never really a proper breakdown for the south, it looks like staying in the mid-high twenties until the weekend when it becomes a bit unclear. The only difference from the last few weeks will be possibly a few degrees cooler and some thunderstorms about, so not bad really!
  17. Could reach 34C here tomorrow, it will be a sticky one indeed! With 21C forecasted as a low tomorrow it will be the first proper hot day and night and i'm looking forward to it
  18. GFS looking good for southern areas next week, seems like there is no real breakdown at all with temperatures staying in the mid-high 20s until Saturday at least. The low is moving further west each run, it's not over yet!
  19. Definitely not for July.. average max here in July is 23-24C.. especially after the last few weeks it would feel quite cold.
  20. Also I remember in 2006 despite having a poor August we then had a warm September and October - this year could be similar and allow us to have a long extended summer. Certainly deserved after the lack of warmth in Spring!
  21. Because the weather we were seeing then was very unseasonal, low single figure temperatures and snow - that's not pleasant for anyone unless we have some cold blooded people on here? It's much easier to have a tolerance to heat than cold.. if you were outside in the freezing cold for a prolonged period with little clothing then you would get hypothermia.. if you did the same in 30C then the worst you could get is a headache if it really affects someone that much
  22. The two temperatures on top is the range that the max temp could be, for example the lowest it could possibly be on that day is 20, the highest 38, so the top row is 20/38 The bottom two is the range of the mins, so the lowest it could be is 13 and the highest 21 hence 13/21 It's guesswork at that point.. as basically it is just the whole range of possible temperatures that it could be in July, but the range of the max is higher as the uppers have increased. after day 2 of a southerly flow the uppers will be higher which could lead to temps in the mid-high 30s, but that's a big if.
  23. Another thing to note - last time we had a very hot July this led to a very warm early Autumn, not to everyone's taste but personally I love having warmth in September and October. It gives me some happiness despite the short and gloomy days that are around the corner at that time of the year!
  24. The BBC extended online weather forecast is showing potential max temps of 38C next week in London.. of course it's too far out yet but wow, I would also hope for it to come off!
  25. Both Heathrow and Ashford showing 38C.. and I live slap bang inbetween them.. wow
