A Face like Thunder he is right about the Helm
its a wind that happens under specific weather conditions, mainly in the spring and heads down the western slopes of Cross Fell, the highest point of the Pennines towards the Eden valley and the general direction of Sedbergh.apparently the helm is the name for the cloud bar that usually covers Cross fell at the same time as the wind and although it’s a very local event and seldom causes the amount of damage that would make the news, it is capable of wind speeds in excess of 80 mph but a few miles down the valley it’s hardly a leaf rustler.
never witnessed it myself and my walks over Cross fell have always been in glorious conditions but it certainly an exposed place.

I’ve taken a few days off here as the continuing crap weather pattern is depressing me but I thought I’d post today that this weekends current conditions and forecast is depressing me even more.
if a fence rattling easterly is your thing then today is heaven.
if cold raw temperatures, cloudy skies and the threat of rain does it for you then again, what a great prospect but for those like me who are just looking for lengthening daylight to turn up with its mate, warmer weather then it’s a kick in the teeth.
yes March can be a month of winter conditions and yes we have been somewhat spoilt over recent years with at least some warmer conditions mixed in but this pattern of the weather not taking any notice of the seasons and putting spoilers in wherever possible has been locked in since late June last year and is currently showing no signs of changing.
Even the dry and limited sunshine of the last few days have hardly been warm and to me that lack of anything remotely warm and pleasant feeling, apart from a couple of days for some in February has been the worst part of it.
I’ve had enough of yet another winter that refused to deliver but a spring that does the same is looking increasingly likely.
Rant over and back to looking for a hint of something better at 240 hours in the same way that the mad thread looks for a bit of frost and a flake of snow.

Something cold and wet falling from the sky but I won’t call it snow or will likely be charged under trades description laws
Not driving into Manchester so just deciding how to get to the bus, walk in whatever cold and wet is falling or taxi

Looking good for another round of snow up here today.
no science behind other than a quick look at the charts and the fact that I’m down at the other end of the Irwell wandering around the Manchester/ Salford border.
no doubt just unpleasant cold rain there.

Still a covering of snow on the grass and roofs up here from the two or three cm that fell from mid morning until mid afternoon.
not a bad effort in the end but it didn’t take long for the sun to break through and clear if off the drive before I got home.
saved me a job.

As already said, it’s looking like a repeat of the other last minute let down with cold rain and sleet as good as it gets for anyone not half way up a mountain.
i must admit to being sucked in by the build up to the early Feb event and being disappointed when it all went belly up at the last moment but no such expectations this time and no disappointment when it’s a few hours of wet sloppy crap that barely covers even the colder surfaces.
It’s March and the extra daylight of the last few days has put me in full spring mode so anything less that a full scale blizzard and I’m not interested.

Plenty of snow symbols showing for Friday on the Met app for here and a BBC forecast showing snow both tomorrow and Saturday so if it comes off we could easily be looking at the best snow opportunity this winter.
or it could all downgrade at the last moment into a wet sleety mess as did the last event.
either way we will soon know.

Chris.R given what happened a couple of weeks ago, it can even go belly up at t0.
better waiting until t+24 to be sure what we get.
Up here even today didn’t live up to the forecast.
the rain arrived earlier than expected, was lighter than expected but the late afternoon clearance never materialised so the only thing that ended up as a expected was another technically mild but cold feeling sort of day to add to a long list of them over the last few months.

Looking at the radar, I’ll be surprised if today stays dry as long as the forecast said.
Last night they were going for it to be dry until lunchtime but the speed the front is heading across the Irish Sea, I’d expect it to reach here, the very east of the region by mid morning and give us another few hours cold soaking.

Not a bad morning but an increasingly miserable afternoon as fine drizzle became heavier drizzle before turning to heavyish rain.
It’s eased of a bit again now but still a poor day overall.

Plenty of talk of snow towards, and over the weekend and the charts look decent but I can’t see the air being cold enough for anything other than over ground much higher than we all live.
maybe a bit of transient wet stuff but I just can’t see anything settling apart from on the highest tops.
happy to be proved wrong though although even snow at my altitude will be wasted on me as I’m in low level Manchester Saturday and Sunday.

Dark Horse strangely enough I always use League Cup final weekend as the time when the later sunset is noticeable and with todays clear skies it’s certainly been the case.
same this morning, driving down the road at just after 6.30am and it was coming light.
as said, the long winter nights are behind us.

Sunny again now so off over the border for a bit of a walk along the canal and maybe a couple of beers before we come home again.

Didn’t take long for the cloud to roll back in and the early brightness to disappear
although if it stays dry I’ll take it.
as for the outlook, Louise on BBC breakfast weather said it’s going to turn more unsettled again into next week
sorry but I must have missed when it actually turned more settled at any time over the last eight months

Lovely start to the day although no signs of frost here.
Maybe my well earned weekend lie in means it had gone before I got up but even the usual spots in the garden are green so I reckon it stayed well above freezing.
A usable day coming up and I just hope that the chance of showers shown in the forecast is as low as the chances of winning millions on the lottery.

Heard it on the factory roof in Haslingden but only lasted a couple of minutes there.
got home from work and there was still patches of white on the grass-

Had Worse same here.
I’ve lost fence panels in easterly winds on days where there’s been nothing but a light breeze a few miles down the valley to the west.
they don’t happen every year but are usually in the spring and it’s a constant wind rather than gusty so maybe a scaled back but similar set up to the Helm Wind.
It must be a common set up down the west facing Pennine upslopes.
