A few threatening looking clouds over the Pennines this afternoon but another day of wall to wall sunshine, no rain and a 27c + temperature.
it’s a bit hazy now though and the air air is full of the stench of burning so there must be a fire somewhere locally.

Small grass fire just up the hill from us has left the house stinking of smoke
thankfully it didn’t take long for the fire engines to arrive and put the damn thing out.

Winter hill fire now a major emergency with the 2 separate fires merging into one. The smoke blowing across the M61 and over Chorley totally blocks out the sun, a bit eerie really.
Almost 350 firefighters from across the north are now involved in fighting the fires on Winter Hill and Saddleworth Moor and it looks like the Army may be brought in to help with the Winter Hill fire.
just hope to god that there aren’t any more incidents until these are brought fully under control although somehow I think it’s going to get worse before it gets better.

Just under 27c here now so could be looking at 30c max later this afternoon which would be the third time this week, truly exceptional conditions for my part of the region and altitude.
other than that though fantastic conditions although the dryness is getting worrying and we’re probably looking at the last couple of days before the hosepipe ban comes in.

Cloudy start up here with, dare I say it a coolish breeze but here comes the sun.

Whatever they thought it would do, it didn’t as what used to be a surface of clippings is now a black oily mess.
it’ll teach Lancs CC not to buy road surfacing materials from pound shops.
at least it got shut of all the grit left from last winter when it was obviously to cold to venture out.

More gritter activity on the main road past our house today than on most days last winter.

According to United Utilities, reservoir levels in the Pennines are about 60%, not desperately low but down on an average year and given the forecast of more warm weather and little sign of rain i’d Imagine a hosepipe ban could be on the cards for North West England later in the summer.
still a far cry from 1976, 1984 and 1995 though.

Yes and both ended with an easterly although if my memory serves me correctly, the February one was a bit on the coolish side.
fantastic days weather today, for those like me who like it warm and sunny.
Just finished after a full day working in the garden fitting decking and my back is certainly feeling it now along with a sunburned neck although that’s my fault for once again underestimating the strength of the sun at this time of year.

Misty start up here for us early risers but it didn’t last long and the sun is out now.
Hopefully a good day for working in the garden, broken by the football at lunchtime and a BBQ later.

A lot of rain came from that shower and it’s still raining now but it’s brightening up a bit now.
no doubt that the grass will shoot up again after that watering as it has barely grown in the last couple of weeks.

Ours went off during that storm a couple of Fridays back.
no Corry or Emmerdale on record so they had to watch it in real time, adverts and all.

Lovely journey down through the Yorkshire Dales today,
stopped at Aysgarth falls and then Wensleydale Creamery before calling for a bit of something to eat at a pub on the tops between Haworth and Hebden Bridge.
sunshine throughout and temperatures on the car showing into the mid 20’s
whats not to like.

What a great spell of weather this is turning out to be and for the first time in what seems like years, a proper winter has been followed by a proper summer.
Wedding anniversary so off out for a nice country pub meal now and for a change it may just be eaten outside.

Another brilliant days weather, 21c max here but felt plenty warm enough in the strong sunshine and although the pollen count was very high, my hayfever kept away.
Obviously a long time remaining for it to go belly up but so far, late spring and summer 2018 has delivered big style.

July 2006 was a glorious month, I went to Norfolk broads on holiday later on in that month and there was some impressive storms, one I remember at sunset which turned the lightning red.
Also went to the broads on holiday in August 2001 I think and saw some very impressive lightning displays then.
Probably was.
i live about 7 miles north of Rochdale and we got over 60mm of rain in the space of a couple of hours from this storm with quite a bit of flooding.
don’t remember the thunder and lightening being that excessive though although I was probably to busy mopping out the conservatory that briefly became an indoor paddling pool.
the best storm I can remember here was in July 1975 with some serious flooding after over 50mm fell in 45 minutes along with violent lightening and constant thunder.
three miles down the valley hardly a drop of rain fell but the river was overtopping it’s banks in bright sunshine.

Grass fire completely closed the southbound A56 Accrington bypass, a few miles away but maybe that’s where the smell of burning here is coming from.
