  1. 12z would probably bring a below -1C month!
  2. Looks like a polar low forming off the west Norwegian coast (right at the top of the view) http://www.sat24.com/
  3. Here's a nice little bbc slideshow on them which was posted up today: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-10635796
  4. I saw them too, first ever time i've seen them and I think it was a very good show as well. Here's one of the better pictures I just took (I think I need a tripod to be honest) The setting on my camera has made the sky look orange, when in fact it's actually a green sunset/horizon.
  5. Has anyone else seen the noctilucent cloud display over London tonight? it's absolutely stunning and the first time i've ever seen them. They are fading now, but were extremely clear about 10 minutes ago.
  6. That cold pool is insane, imagine if that shifted our way! Ashame it's the last one of FI...
  7. Still 0C outside so should be on the right side of marginal here unless there's an upper level warm pool?
  8. Next batch coming into London now!! Looks like my area could be in the firing line for some rather prolonged snow especially considering that the front extends all the way into France!
  9. Coming down decently in Hampton Court now, shouldn't be long before you get some more!
  10. Well the metoffice London 5 minute radar has gone down!!! Are there any other similar high resolution radars (for free)
  11. It looks as though areas to the west of central London should get the decent heavier stuff within an hour after which the front will begin to stall.
  12. I hope so! How much do you reckon we could expect (I am around Hampton Court near Kingston)
  13. I'm still not convinced that my location (on the edge of south west London) is going to get much out of it. Looked at the London 5 minute radar, and my location is under the lightest precipitation category which is all broken up in itself and the front is moving NE to NNE which will just result in me remaining under that very broken very light snowfall!! Can anyone convince me that I am going to get anything decent from this?
  14. Someone needs to bin their temperature sensor me thinks!
  15. I feel your pain, it seems like this winter there has been a very localised snowless region around west London. Here in south west London, i'd be pushed to say that we've exceeded 1cm cumulative snowfall so far this winter. Whilst inner areas of London, only 5 miles away have been pasted with a number of 3-4"+ events!!! Where's the hope when there are people ramping on about a 1963 winter, repeat of 1987, 1991 etc yet all we get is a marginal pasting of heavy rain!! Infact I would easily take the April 2008 snow event over any 'potential' that is being shown now. How is it that we can get 4 inches of snow in April 2008, but get less than 1cm of snow over 2 weeks at the coldest part of the year and with some of the best synoptics in decades!!!! Could someone explain what is going on here?? We are predicted sleet for about an hour tomorrow how can this be!!!
  16. If i'm reading this right, seems like it'll be a complete let down once again for my area. Does anyone think the prospects for south-west London are any good tomorrow i.e. how much snow could we expect?
  17. http://www.thesun.co.uk/scotsol/homepage/news/2792862/Councils-across-Scotland-are-on-the-verge-of-running-out-of-grit-to-treat-icy-roads.html#mySunComments Paul gets another mention in the above article on the shortage of grit in Scottish councils.
  18. If the high off northwest Scotland combined with the high off Eastern Greenland, then we could be in with a chance of a decent(ish) northerly. This would be the best option as there is very little in the way of cold pooling elsewhere. (at 180)
  19. Far FI sends the -5C 3000 miles further north than 10 days prior to it (from North Africa to North Norway!)
  20. Northerly reload in FI! The Greenland high rebuilds again towards the end of the run. Does anyone think the prospects are good for this cold spell to continue into the second half of the month?
  21. Somehow, I can see the next week or two being another let down for us snow deprived SW Londoners. So far this season, despite having some of the best synoptics in many years, i'd be pushed to say that we've had any more than around 1cm cumulative snowfall. I think that all those who have been stating comparisons to 1963 etc should take a step back for a second. Whilst so far it has been very good for people on the far east coast and a select few further inland, I think it would be wise if some of you lowered your expectations a bit, because i'm sure there will be loads of people who will get disappointed. I don't think this will even come close to 1963, 87 or 91. In fact I think we would be lucky to even get a repeat of last February. So what i'm saying is I think that other than a lucky few, it will be a pretty much dry and cold couple of weeks so don't raise your expectations too much!
  22. Does anyone have any idea when the uppers over North Africa last dropped to -5c and below? Surely this would bring snow showers over inland Algeria and Morocco even at low levels considering how warm the Mediterranean is...
  23. http://www.natice.no..._asiaeurope.gif Check out the European snow cover, not often that you see pretty much all of Europe covered like that.... What's even more impressive is the near 100% snow cover of Russia with the snow even working it's way down the eastern black sea coast! Infact there is nearly continuous snow cover north of the 45th parallel!!! http://www.natice.noaa.gov/pub/ims_gif/DATA/cursnow.gif
