  1. Snow above 300m this morning, ground too warm for it to settle at our level where is was mainly rain, with a few flakes mixed in.
  2. -9 in Rhayader, equalling cold snap beginning of December. Hope others have seen some snow, nothing here.
  3. Lightest of sprinklings overnight, much colder today. Forecast for Sunday and start of next week looks very nasty. Met Office Deep Dive gave a good explanation on YouTube yesterday as to its origins. Edit: as I posted, the first warnings for wind have been issued, must be very concerning to raise this far out!
  4. Little bit of snow north of Rhayader towards Llangurig this morning, but not much else. Temp actually reached 5c in Newtown this afternoon, which is warmer than anything we reached last week! Any snow melted by time I returned this afternoon. So far just standard winter weather, but far better than wind and rain - will keep checking the radar in hope!
  5. This whole week has been chilly, just checked the output for the last week on our weather station - High of 4.2c, low of - 2.3, an average of 1.5c. Hardly mild! I still think the next week could throw up a surprise or 2..
  6. Some grains blowing about in Rhayader. Ground still frozen from last night, so anything that falls will settle.
  7. Huge flakes coming down, lovely winter wonderland, fortunately our neighbour appears to be a snow fan and are leaving their outside light on!
  8. About an inch so far and still coming down nicely, any bets on this continuing into tomorrow or is it all going to be washed away??
  9. I do indeed, next to the River Wye. We are very fortunate indeed to live where we do. It is a lovely town with some spectacular countryside on our doorstep. Just been up the Elan, it was very special today.
  10. Dropped to - 9.3 here last night, relatively 'mild' - 7 currently, reports of snow in Aberystwyth. Can not see this depth of cold being cleared without some of the white stuff.
  11. Bless you, sounds like Mr Hog has well and truly landed on his feet finding your shed - dinner and bed! Hope he decides to spend the winter with you! With you feeding the cats regularly, if he does wake he will have food available too, so stands a very good chance if making it to spring. Already - 7 here, seriously cold, hibernating seems a good idea!
  12. Treasure your hedgehog, they really are in desperate trouble. We had one here only a couple of weeks ago clearing slugs that had come out for the spilt bird seed, looked a good size - hopefully the milder autumn will have done them a favour.
  13. A bone chilling - 7 in Rhayader this morning.. Bird feeders are swamped, remember our wild ones during this cold snap!
  14. -5.8c in Rhayader this morning, countryside absolutely stunning. Frost hung on all day in the shade.
  15. Yes, these are already popping up in places like Sweden. They can also have their own micro generation via a renewables source so they can separate from the grid.
  16. Super fast charging is already available in many countries abroad where charging your car takes 10 to 15 minutes at an EV charging station, not that different to a fuel station. As usual the UK is a slow adopter and makes these things very expensive where they do exist. I also agree I'm lucky I have a drive. On street charging technology is often not available, but destination charging is often an option with many workplaces now offering ev charging. Unfortunately, the cost of charging on the network has risen significantly due to rising energy costs in the last couple of years. Competition needs to drive this down fast and the government could also take action by reducing tax on ev charging, just as they have frozen fuel duty for many years. The charging network also needs to be simplified, but many are now contactless. EV manufacturers also need to focus on making their cars more efficient, the obsession with electrifying SUVs means these wedge shaped cars are horribly inefficient. It isn't perfect, but the technology exists to solve many of these issues and it is happening. Obstacles are often sadly political.
  17. That genuinely surprises me - what are their grumbles? I must admit I was nervous before getting one, I did a lot of research, but it has been a very good and financially advantageous decision. The car itself has blown me away. Would I buy one? Probably no, the technology is still developing very quickly, they are too expensive to buy and the EVs coming out now are even better still - but for the many of us these days who lease they make a huge amount of sense. It probably helps that I don't do very long journeys and can rely on a home charger - but if it can work for me in rural Wales I can imagine it would work in most places.
  18. No, why would I?? It tells me how far I have got to go just as a petrol car would? If you are running low you top up! In all seriousness, temperature and speed do affect range more than petrol and longer journeys take a bit of planning - but nothing insurmountable as public chargers have increased massively in the last couple of years.
  19. Probably about £40 a month compared to £150 a month previously in fuel. Electric cars have adjustable torque, usually via an eco mode or some now have a snow mode button - this reduces the amount of power put down on the road. Overall handling is excellent, the low batteries mean it is grounded in the road and holds corners remarkably well for a heavy car. If there was that much snow on the road I would not be driving in it anyway, in petrol or electric! However, I would add that the country with the highest number of electric cars per person is Sweden - not known for its mild winters! A 50kw battery holds enough power to run an average home for a week, a few hours powering a heater in a car won't bother it.. I'm not pretending electric cars will suit everyone (yet!), or they are going to save the planet on their own (they're not) - but the amount of scaremongering that is being published by some media at the moment is especially laughable to someone who actually owns one!
