  1. That was bizarre. Just a couple of hundred yards from the front door the heavens opened and then immediately followed by about 30-45 seconds worth of the most intense hail I've seen in several massive downdrafts - set off car alarms and everything...then stooped just as suddenly.. Turbulent above !

Yip this happened to me, I was waiting for a bus on princes street at that time. Next thing I know wham. I was insane. I've never seen anything like it, even the hail was big it was a good 4mm in diameter.

  2. Thanks for the info sammie. I've not been in JCMB since.... eh ... May 1984 !

It wont have changed much on the outside but they refurbished the inside this summer so it has a freaking Costa Coffee in it now ¬_¬ cheers thats really affordable student food EUSA never mind I hide in the bio department and ignore everything else. Ahem. But yeah the new anemometer is crap as well. The whole weather station needs replaced we had a good one like three years ago when I started at the uni and the builders damaged it about a year ago and now the department doesn't have the funding to get a nice one so we're stuck with the bare minimum according to a friend who's doing honours geophysics.

  3. HT to Shuggee earlier for highlighting that staggering and rapid drop in temperature around mid-morning. Then the wind dropped and the rain fell and boy that was a cold day

I was walking around Kings Building Campus when that happened and there was about 10 minutes of serious insane horizontal monsoon like rain with hail mixed in. Though I will say now if you are ever looking at the university weather station it tends to underestimate wind speeds and be generous with rain fall since it uses a tipping bucket rain gauge and its on the top of the JCMB building with is 9 floors high so the wind tends to rattle it and give you higher readings.

  4. Quite a bit of flooding on the Edinburgh Bypass - notably at Lothianburn and Gilmerton. At the latter, the off ramp was under 2 ft of water. Strangely, people seemed to imagine their corsa was a landrover until that is the engine stopped in the middle of it. D-oh.

*facepalms* oh dear. Oh very dear. Its been a very wet day! Current weather:

  5. Oh my word its insane outside. Got soaked with rain and hail on the way to uni about 1030 this morning, then its just rained all damned day Edinburgh is in chaos. I'd advise anyone to stay clear of Cameron Toll area its chaos the drains are bursting everywhere its like a swimming pool and try to avoid coming up Minto Street and S Clerk Street because its just a torrent of water at the moment. It really was insane about an hour and a half ago, taken me 50 mins to get from Kings Buildings back to Newington the roads are backed up everywhere.

Other than that you know, its been a bit wet today.

  6. Bit blustery in Edinburgh, dry and sunny though, so time will tell how bad this is going to get by tea time when I leave work...feels very humid though which is not nice

    EDIT://

getting windy now, Forth Road Bridge restrictions now in place: "RT @forthroadbridge High winds - Bridge closed to high-siders, cars with trailers, caravans, motorcycles & pedestrians #edintravel"

  7. Anybody think that Ex Hurricane Katia and an Eruption of Katla would go well together?

Oh hells yeah! I bet Katla is just sat there waiting for her sister Katia to show up so they can go paint the town together - jkjk kids!

The one thing that really don't get is where this theory about seismic activity around Katla being due to hydrothermal activity. I gave it a quick google and couldn't find much on it (or in general) that made much sense to me - someone wanna hook a sister up with some info?

  8. My Twitter stream just exploded. Friend in Baltimore is reporting feeling the quake strong enough for everyone to be evacuated from the office building and all the phone line are down. Another friend in Brooklyn felt it as well with it strong enough to throw a mirror off the wall and even my sister in Toronto just called me to tell me they had a quake all within about 3 mins of each other.

  9. I think they coped with the situation really well. Judging by what was said on the other thread they were pretty close to a disaster as the water had started to enter through the door. Glad no real harm or damage happened to you Sammie. Hows it been up there today

Its okay, the only thing that was wrecked was the door the waters has wrecked the bottom lock but its easy enough to fix. Not much rain today everything missed us thank God!

  10. Okay so as you know my kitchen narrowly avoided flooding yesterday during the downpour. I caught the first storm on video and the rain that accompanied it. The second was heavier but we were too busy you know, trying to save the flat to get videos and stuff. Warning this video has got swearie words in it so if you arn't adult enough to deal with my two flatmates and I bouncing around and the odd f and s bomb then don't watch.

    Enjoy the rapture rain.

And yes my flatmates and I talk a lot. Deal with it.

  11. I must be the only one hoping nothing happens. Still inches of standing water in places and with the rain over the last two days I seriously don't think the Edinburgh area can take anything more without there being more widespread flooding than has happened in the last two days. I would have been more than happy with one storm for the year but this is taking the micky, seriously storms other people deserve to enjoy you!
