  1. The Swiss media have been bigging up the incoming cold spell, mind there is a bit more flesh to the "arctic bone" when the maximas will be ranging from -8c to -11c and fresh NE/N winds will be bringing down the windchill to lower levels and that's just in the cities at low level...The usual freezer areas are bracing themselves for -30c and below (villages in valleys higher up but not very high by Swiss standards eg La Brevine at 1100m). Bit of exotic news for you... ;-) PS Guess who's flying there on friday eh?
  2. I'm in Switzerland next week-end, no doubt about what the temps will be over there...I'm packing lots of insulation!
  3. Peter H, what are those websites and models showing westerlies you are talking about?
  4. Anyone who seen the ECM 0Z run this morning could write those headlines really...It was really that good!
  5. Actually, it's Monbiot in the Guardian who has killed PWS...It's a rather interesting insight... http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/georgemonbiot/2012/jan/26/weather-forecasters-daily-mail
  6. I concur, decisive step towards calling February cold and under easterly influence there.
  7. Bit weird to read the last two comments this morning... Edit: before Rollo intervened...
  8. Thanks Chiono, Lorenzo, GP, etc. It would be great if this thread does not also turn into a whinge fest because the models are not showing pretty charts baring in mind all the background work being done to stay ahead of the silliness being churned out 4 times a day...
  9. One last frosty morning, if only that lovely high could sit above us for two weeks...Lake District (stayed in Rydal for two nights) was superb at the week-end, even went for a walk on snow up on Fairfield... Back to dross weather too soon...
  10. Dear God, some settled weather, frost, sun! Off to give a dusting to my tent and backpack!
  11. Thank god someone on the internet did spot it and wrote a blog about it!!!!!
  12. Pattern change he said....more like Pattern destruction with chars like the one Liam posted!!!
  13. If anyone wants to know who killed Kennedy, PM me, I've had some interesting encounters in pubs too you know...
  14. Jeez Weather Ship, for a second I thought you were having a laugh when I read your comment about "remote sensing" as meaning those batty experiments the CIA conducted in the 70's training (remote viewing)...
  15. That PV lobe chart over the UK is insane, 935mb core...!!!! Surely most of the country would be flattened if this happend?
  16. As I mentionned on another thread Coast, I rely on them (and another forecaster called Mountain Weather Information Service) to ensure I don't end up crag fast in a storm or my tent being blown away down a fell with me inside by carefully checking their mountain specific forecasts and they generally are excellent although they've had some annoying fails too (occasional drizzle is NOT continuous rain for 5 hours...). That's why I rate them. Anyhow, I hope I get my loyal servant badge from them if they read this
  17. It's not even true that the MetOffice were forecasting a mild winter last year, didn't they brief the govt about the serious possiblity of extreme cold and I rarely recall as positive a vibe about them on here as when their 30 dayer was signalling what was in store in the coming weeks.
  18. The problem for the MetO is that their warnings are used by a lot of people and should they start being more gun-ho about issuing them, how long will it take till some people think a "Red warning" is just some "Health&Safety gone mad", ignore them and end up in a dire situation? As a specie, we do tend to become quickly immune to "Wolf" cries... You then also have the problem of businesses taking heed of alarmist warnings and then turning against them with accusations of ruining business. If they issue a Red warning for, say, Cumbria for the week-end and it turns out it's just a stiff breeze, you'll have a lot of people in the tourist industry very upset with them It's a difficult call really and that's not seeking excuses on their behalf, they messed up and they know it.
  19. I don't know Seven of Nine, I'm not the one running a blog full of accusations towards a respected organisation work on an extremely complex subject that far exceeds my modest understanding of the climate (and that of most people on here if truth to be told...)
