  1. Seems to tie up pretty well with Meto 16-30 dayer actually.
  2. So I'm reading Matt Hugo about a strong signal for MJO to enter phase 6/7 by early April, any thoughts for you chaps?
  3. Perfect walking weather in the NW of the Peak District, good to be out!
  4. Splendid stuff, think I'll book monday off and I'll be pitching high on sunday night, nowth like enjoying the sun with a brew whilst your tent thaws and the valleys are under the fog...
  5. Excellent conditions for inversions that, best book a night off early next week for a pitch on a high hill!
  6. Ticks already in full biting mood up in the Scottish hills, great...
  7. Well, the top 3 forecasters (GP, RJS and Lady of the Storm) did not mention a long cold winter, did they? Once you finished castigating the backslapping, learn to read...
  8. Intriguing comments Terminal Moraine/Recklessabandon, there seem to be great variations even in smallish areas (the Peak District is not exactly a huge area and there is not that much distance between Carsington and Ladybower reservoirs).
  9. The Ladybower reservoirs certainly looked very full yesterday, at least it's not parched everywhere...
  10. When I moved to Manchester in september 95, I ended up with a very ironic weather scenario, baring in mind how much I was told about rainy Manchester...a drought and I did not see any rain (aside from the odd drizzle/light rain) until November. I remember phoning my mum from the phone box next to my old flat, in a t-shirt and explaining to her the weather (whilst Geneva was under anti-cyclonic gloom). I'd like to add that I much rather live in the UK than anywhere of those mono-seasonnal places where the sun always shine. That would be utterly boring...
  11. Feel free to explain why you think so Fred, maybe a few charts from your special method alongside a few explanations might help since you seem to want to contradict GP at every turn and offers not much more than some tantalising clues about drivers behind drivers and energy peaks. You never know, it might make you as popular as GP...
  12. It is very changeable but seems to reset to standard grey, windy, rainy with an alarming regularity. Days in January and July can show the same temperature profile... Give me the sharply defined seasons of central Europe anyday, even if sometimes it becomes hard to bear (either heat or cold)...
  13. Got to hand it to you Peter, you truly are a splendidly grumpy chap. I read your posts in a thick NI accent for added effect...

  15. A big thank you to the main contributors on this thread. Not only for the insight into possible weather scenarios but also for the explanations, sometimes often repeated. The reasonning and science behind it is fascinating and leaves me with the impression of some real investigative work being undertaken. No arcane musings, no nebulous allusions to hidden drivers, no obsessive hopecasting just good solid science and a great read for anyone with an interest in weather.
  16. Well, the BBC test for weather forecasters is probably not going to happen. You got to love PC excuse... http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2099922/BBCs-Weather-Test-washout-bid-check-accuracy-forecasts-vanishes-storm-wrangling-predicted.html
  17. Aren't most forecast for the UK really only for the mainland with NI being on another island furhter west subject to different variables? Up to a point even the Western Isles in Scotland are far too much at the mercy of even limited Atlantic influence to be truly included in a nationwide forecast.
  18. Back from the freezer, 6c seems balmy compared to the -8c it was when I left gva this morning...4 days of proper cold with strong NE winds made for a shivery week-end. Higher up, my saturday ramble in -15c and gale force NE winds was, well, bracing...
  19. James Delingpole...I don't think you need saying anything more...
  20. M.Wainwright at the Grauniad must not have been paying much attention when he wrote this...It certainly does not tie up with the Met Office long range thoughts.. Milder weather is expected on Monday, and the rest of February will be unsettled, with the Met Office forecasting warmer and wetter weather taking over. The Guardian journalist must not have paid attention to the Met Office monthly forecast it seems... http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2012/feb/01/weather
  21. The weather remains the same in the bedroom where most people spend their time staring intensely at charts on a screen, relax...what happens outside is almost irrelevant
  22. My week-end is shaping up to be a proper winter experience. 20cm of snow today and maximas of -10c by friday (when I land in Gva...). Bring it on! Probably the one thing I miss the most, proper seasons... ;-) Sorry chaps...I'll be thinking of you when there
  23. Some of you really need to move to another country, your fantasy weather types do not occur very often 'round here...
  24. Well, what a pleasure to be back up in the hills covered in snow. Decent dump on Bleaklow, surprised by the amount actually and made the walking quite difficult at times whilst today on Ingleborough, less snow but frozen solid down to lower levels. At last...
