  1. Hi there Yaffle. I think we've done just fine this winter. 1 full week and two weekends of snow (settled with depth) in January... a good dollop in Feb (several short lived snow events) and looks to me that we will certainly see some snow this weekend .... though probably several cm rather than the 10-30 cm likely to the West and South. Its been okay this winter and a zillion times better than the winters of late 90's early 2000's. Chin up, it is spring .... but more snow could hit next week as well ! Y.S
  2. Yes agree. In Strensall also. Temp 0.9 and Dewpoint -0.7. Now a good covering. Heavy unexpected wet snow. Lovely ! Y.S
  3. Give it a rest. I want Spring as much as you. Its just not showing at the moment. The 18Z just backs up the ECM and also really the UKMO. Cold next week with either cold rain ... or some snow, but really time is on your side when push comes to shove and I'll sing to your tune as soon as warm charts look likely to become reality. Y.S
  4. Well maybe I am mistaken but I look at the charts and see. -14 uppers across the whole country Monday into Tuesday. Heavy convective snow showers with the possibility of frontal snow skimming the South and South East, dew points below freezing .......that would be settling snow even though we are in March. Possible notable accumulations Sunday night .... its a developing situation. Agree that after that its is likely to be cold and pretty miserable until at least later in the week ....... where did anybody say it was going to be -4 all day ..... from what I read the majority were quite rightly quoting two possible ice days ...... which looks a close call for Monday into Tuesday. I'm happy with that. Something very rare in March and quite exciting ! Y.S
  5. This is a nicely written post but geeeezee, why not go outside and enjoy what has and continues to be some fantastic winter cold weather (happening in the here, now and immediate future). Its almost as though everybody has had no winter weather at all. Yes, a change to mild is nailed on for next week ... but beyond that it bloody well is not. The Vortex is undergoing changes and movements that will continue to affect the weather pattern over the next few weeks as has been widely discussed. In addition, I believe the MJO looks like being favourably placed into Feb, the Jet is often at its weakest winter strength as February moves on, so nothing to get downbeat about and I'm sure plenty more chances of the white stuff before spring comes along. I've been reading and following the weather and enjoying this as well as other forums for many a long year and one thing I have learned is that changes from mild to cold can occur rapidly and without model fanfare. Not having a personnal dig at you CH (this thread is just a bit too down in the dumps today). For those that remember the late 90's and early 2000's, then this cold spell has been quite something (I so fondly remember certain posters claiming the end of Lowland snow in the UK !!!) whilst we chased with excitement a possible northerly toppler giving 1-2 days of transient snowfall at t300+ !! Y.S
  6. I'm in Strensall and its snowing nice and moderate. More like 2 inches here and I'm just 6 miles north of York ! Looks good for a while yet. Cracking spell of cold. Y.S
  7. And this; taken from aquar satellite measurements: There has been no warming for the past 10 years ..... which ties in with the PDO (ongoing La Nina) and recent low solar activity. See: http://www.drroyspencer.com/2012/02/ten-years-after-the-warming/ Y.S
  8. Try March 22 2008. 4 inches of snow fell over lowland England in a Northwesterly as a Trough formed. Snow lasted throughout Easter Day .... though most did melt within 24-48 hrs. That weekend was cold with continuous snow showers down to sea level with hard overnight frosts. Y.S
  9. Have to say, that its been a bloody excellent forecast from G.P. The change-over and cold from a very mild first half ......... come on people, not every detail is going to be spot on, but so far this has been stunningly good. Who else has come anywhere close to G.P's efforts ...... more staggering as it was issued back in November. Well done sir and to date, nobody in my opinion has any room for complaint to the winter forecast you have made. Please keep up the excellent, informative and educational work. One very appreciative weather nut Y.S
  10. Yes, agree. In Yorkshire it has also been a great Feb so far. We've been on the edge of the block, so I guess this accounts for the varying fortunes of those around the UK. Still time for more, though next week looks milder. Y.S
  11. Light Snow In Strensall (North of York). Light Rain in Harrogate Y.S
  12. Excellent another Strenny..ite. Snowcover has been excellent here though hasn't it ..... hardly any melt at all !! Lets hope for a another fresh fall ! Y.S
  13. Hi Dude, See your in my neck of the woods. Recorded a staggering low of -10.6 last night in Strensall (yes this is confirmed from two recordings from separate weather sensors in my garden). Snow cover almost complete with little to no thaw .... yet in Harrogate (400-500 feet above sea level) its been between 3-5 degrees yesterday and today (though clouding over now) with very little extensive cover left. Quite amazing !! Y.S
  14. Nice one. I'm in Strensall and its the same. Terrington Bank with the kids sledging tomorrow...... Bring it on !! Y.S
  15. Hi Folks, Heavy snow still near York. Temp -1. dew -2. 3-5 inches. Y.S
  16. Hi Folks, Awesome snow, heavy and blowing in Strensall North of York. Easily 2-3 inches (plenty of drifts too). This has so far already exceeded my expectations. Y.S
  17. Hi Folks, Been snowing pretty steadily (fine powdery snow) in Strensall (6 miles north of York - Sea level) for the past 1.5 hrs. About 3 cm of level snow (but is blowing around in the wind). Temp .... around -1 degrees C. (Really coming down now). Looking good folks !! Y.S
  18. Sorry, but really don't get where you are coming from .......... other than you are winding folks up on purpose. Central belt East countrywide 5-10 cm with it freezing over night where the snow clears. There is no Atlantic dominated theme in the medium term as you constantly were suggesting was likely a few days ago. Wouldn't at all be suprised if the front begins to stall and more snow falls further West ...... but we shall see. Y.S
  19. Honestly. West, please go and try to read the charts !! One day you will be right, ..... but massively unlikely today. Y.S
  20. How's that then, given we are at 31 January !! ?? Still looks like a cold Feb ahead to me, but then I'm just looking at the Esemble means, and discussions on Weatherbell, G.P, etc etc. Some really silly posts this morning across the threads. Y.S
  21. Guys, I'm always looking East ... and dreaming of Feb 91, Jan 87 etc etc (This thread is great though CC. Now come on lets reel in that Easterly / North Easterly / Northerly ... any of these will do) Y.S
  22. Hi Frosty, Yes, I am not convinced at all that we have seen the last of the changes in modal output. Just read G.P's technical note and also been looking at what Joe B has been posting on Weatherbell. The longer range look has High pressure over Greenland and a Trough over Europe ... seems good agreement that this is a likely evolution (despite the recent operrationals) and hopefully within the next 10 day frame. The A/O looks like its to take a nose dive and the NAO should follow. I read a good technical piece from Joe B in regards to placement and movement of High pressure between the troughs either side Stateside and also in Europe where he was not all convinced of the global modalling. He believes that Western Europe will see winter arrive with a cracking Feb Pattern (not dissimilar to Nov 2010). Maybe he is overselling, but given the background signals there is no need yet for doom and gloom (in my opinion). So, it does not look great right here right now, but there's a long log way still to go and as G.P is at pains to point out, we are a million miles away from the dismal look to the Stratosphere of November. Fascinating stuff. HOLD FAST ! Y.S
  23. Well, I can't help thinking we are seeing positive signs tonight. Can't help feeling an Easterly is on the cards down the line. Strat looks good. PV on the wain (from background signals), more amplification from the GFS. Just need a little more correction and we're there ! Y.S
