hello backtrack
i agree with you we get about 300 quakes in the uk each year
thankfully they are either small or very deep.
however we do have fault lines here
http://www.esri.com/...igating1-lg.jpg
thankfully we are not on a main fault line
i am sure however that the 3.3 in devon was noticed..
Strange its not made the local news yet, we have a crack on the chimney, about 2 foot long but aside from that I can't see any damage.
-
hello matt
i was wondering if anyone from devon felt it
2.7 and only 1.5 depth is noticeable for the uk
have you checked for any damage??

Nope, although I will, it was quite a shake... well for a place that doens't get that many lol.

So thats what that boom and house shake was about then, I thought it was a bomb!

The only reason daylight hours are 'wasted' in summer is because most humans require 7-8 hours sleep and there are less than 7-8 hours of darkness in midsummer due to our latitude.
Changing the clocks won't make any difference. In order to benefit from any perceived 'extra' hour of daylight in the evening then one would need to either get up an hour later in the morning or have an hour's less sleep with resultant long term health issues.
The only beneficiaries I can see will be the unemployed.
Would be great on the two days when you don't have to go to work a week though ...
Plus, I reckon 6 hrs is a passable amount of sleep
-
Sounds like a great idea to me. Surely now we live in a 24hr age it make sense to have longer in the evenings?
Plus, down here it will be light long into the night. Perfect for BBQs and parties.

Lovely day today, sat out with t-shirt on at lunch, pretty chilly when the sun went behind a cloud, but otherwise a real sense of spring! Lovely
-
It does sometimes work out, I can remember a few times when we have had snow about 2 weeks after the Eastern US ... but thats usually from a NW direction... the good stuff will be a battleground over us East vs West

A guy I used to work with had family who owned what used to be called Sparkwell Zoo (south Dartmoor) he said they had seen large black cats on the CCTV outside the large cat cages. How true this is remains to be seen! That said, there are lots of reports from the area, especially from the older population who have had countless chickens taken in large quantities and allegedly found skulls in their grounds that have been shown to belong to large cats.
I'm yet to see one... although have seen the remains of some rather vicious attacks on sheep and chicken enclosures.

Crazy, I spent some good times at Mission Beach and Tully. Good luck Qld!

Another bitter day here, albeit sllightly above freezing for the first time in 5 days! Temp last night was -8.7C, so I think its been a tad chilly.
-
3rd ice day in a row today, currently -2.1C with some snizzle.
-
I doubt we will see snow this easter... its virtually in May it's so late.
Freezing again today, and very dry with it.
Edit: At 12:30 its still -2.1c!
-
Brrrr! -1.6C at the mo after a ow of -3.4C last night, very strong wind drying everything out and making it feel uber cold! Just got off the phone to Oz... oh how I wish we had the warmth!
-
Did anyone else spot that tumbleweed?
Pretty miserable day here, lost all the lovely sunshine and instead had 3c and cloud. Sun did some out late this afternoon though which made it feel quite nice!
-
You like tennis a bit too much, Dartmoor Matt. It was lovely and frosty here this morning, with the tops of bins and cars all white, and paths that were untouched by sun were very slippery! Looking good for the next few days for some colder weather. though it does mean the heating has to go back on .
Yeah, does seem a bit mad to be playing in mid Jan, but thats the price to pay I guess.
I'd take this weather anytime, can't beat a bit of sunshine!
-
Bit chilly last night! The tennis courts froze over while wewere playing and it was lovely and white this morning everywhere.
-3.9C was the min. Not bad after the mild!
-
Certainly was wet!
And now, to top it off, NW has my location down for a 4% chance of snow!
-
Some drier weather would be lovely... another day of heavy rain and high winds here today.
Tomorrow looks better. Believe that when I see it, yesterday was supposed to be dry... turned out to be that lovely drizzle. On the plus side, yes, its not as bad as Qld.
-
Not much in the way of real rain here today, certainly not what was forecast. Its just been drizzly and damp all day.
That said, we did have 15mm overnight. Stacking up the totals this week! 78mm since Monday (Tuesday was a dry day)
Normal service has resumed.
-
very wet day here in north west devon with persistent moderate rain and extensive hill fog reducing visibility to 100m. streams are swollen together with field ditches and plenty of runoff onto roads. the ground here is saturated and trying to even drive a quad across some areas is tricky, there is certainly going to be localised flooding tomorrow and maybe widespread flooding come fri with major rivers flowing at maximum capacity.
Will keep you posted on flood levels.
Yeah I see on the BBC site that there are warnings out across Devon & Cornwall with more rain to come tonight, tmrw and over the weekend.
On the plus, its not as bad as in Qld, have some friends in Brisbane and its been pretty scary for them.
-
10.5C here, which feels positively tropical in comparison, but another 22mm of rain so far today is doing nothing to keep those river levels down. 6 flood alerts so far on rivers.
-
Woo, lots of surface water around today and the rivers are very high on the way to work. But the sun is out. That said, still feels cold in the wind,
Least its not as bad as Qld, have friends in Brisbane and its getting worse all the time there.
Total for yesterday was 41mm of rain here... with another 3.5mm after midnight. Good job Dartmoor is a giant sponge!
-
Agreed, it was bad this afternoon with some localised flooding on the sides of the road. Not too bad but in such a short time (30 mins) it was a bit worrying. The wind is very strong still and keep getting bands of rain coming through all the time
Yup, we have exceeded the warnings amount here already (warning was for up to 35mm) its currently 38mm and still raining. Why could this not of been snow?!
Anyways. G'Nite all.
-
Absolutely pouring here again.
Could be some quite interesting amounts by morning. 29mm at the moment.
