  1. Anyone know where I can view daily weather records from my local Met Office weather station? Is this available via a link or would I have to request it?

If it's a station with a WMO ID one third party site I use is 'Ogimet'

You can search it's name here if you don't know the index (gives last 30 days):

      https://www.ogimet.com/indicativos.phtml.en

Or use the ID to choose your time period here (at least from late 1999 onwards)

      https://www.ogimet.com/gsynres.phtml.en

Be careful to make the hour the day ends something logical (and I've noticed midnight/morning hours makes the daily figures appear for the date after the one on which they occurred).

  2. Blown over lorries, trains cancelled, ferries disrupted - but not a named storm? Meto policy is a mess.

To be fair Atiyah was windier in the SW with gusts over 70 mph and it was named by Met Eireann not the Met Office, but I agree it's a bit confusing/inconsistent and there was a system in the south at the start of November that arguably should have been named.

I've had 5 of those notifications over a month or two despite not posting in there since last year sometime, and never being aware of any restriction

Nail on head Nick L. As many know if it wasn't for our hugely biased media, lies and Rupert Murdoch et al; it wouldn't have happened.
Yes, there are other/genuine reasons, but they wouldn't add up to over 50%.
I don't understand many reasons people give anyway, or what relevance WWII has to Brexit in 2016

I wonder if those guys go to the doctor, do they say sorry I won't take that vaccine/medicine because it inconveniences their lifestyle, they don't understand how it works, or they think they know better than all medical professionals/research on this planet?

  7. Our local BBC weather presenter just called the monthly sunshine average the monthly "allowance". Deary me.

Toronto (where my friend is), is having snow today after it's first dusting the other day. Though it seemed to be a relatively bland Autumn there till now with not much of interest (no temps much below freezing and it had been colder here)

Well relentless rain and gales is hardly the only alternative is it.. Sounds more like Dec 15 in the NW due to constant TM flow.
I mean mobility with healthy doses of PM air between fronts, which resulted in winter 2014-15 being the sunniest on record, even 2013-14 was sunnier than normal when averaged nationally.

Maybe true and I haven't said that myself, but I prefer it to endless Bartletts and Euroslugs that are just as stubborn, at least we get more sun and maybe some weather of interest with proper mobile westerlies.

Very much agree, as long as this doesn't happen. Though it looks like it may do.

I think the maps are generally updated automatically from a certain model output, but the warnings are aware it could be stronger and/or slightly further north than that as perhaps some of the higher resolution models hint at

Makes this country seem marginally better in comparison. My friend tells me the Canadian immigration site has crashed, mind you I still might move to Canada myself.

  14. Anyone have any tips for forecasting cloud amounts? I still don't get why the UK suffers with so much cloud regularly in favourable setups on paper. Also why are perfectly still days so rare in the UK even under high pressure?

      Evening thunder

Hopefully then. Forecast to pick up from the SE down here though that should help clear cloud (although it cleared here this afternoon)

Sea on all sides and moist air masses with weaker sun I guess, although we had a number of sunny or mostly sunny days in the last month here. Pressure and cloud don't always correlate of course as there are many other more complex variables, sometimes sunny days happen under low pressure. There's a slight breeze today as we're not actually under a high centre, but in a slight SW drift. Though it was light here today and pretty calm yesterday.

Haha probably a good thing Kayro, felt like there was barely any seasonal temperature decline with a below normal September, very mild November, and record smashing December, full of dull grey SW and S airflows.

Often true sadly but at least if there was enough of a fuss, or enough people realise it's bs (probably wishful thinking), maybe less people will buy their papers..

So we should just let the Express, Mail et al. say baseless things like it's going to be 35C for 2 weeks or we will get the coldest winter for 100 years (and many other things in other subject areas) without questioning :cc_confused:

  22. I think I will take a couple of days annual leave next week to avoid working in hot and sticky conditions

    1. Evening thunder

      Evening thunder

Yeah, gotta say based on uppers of 15-17C and a good land track I'm surprised if e.g. the ECM doesn't show higher than 25C, not seen that before in summer before unless there's no significant sun of course.
GFS looks slightly cooler on uppers and still shows 27C and we know it often under-does maxima a bit.

    1. Evening thunder

      Evening thunder

I thought only a few runs showed anything longer than a couple days anyway, and the GFS is still showing temps about as high for this plume as it showed for the one in July (not saying it will be as hot as then - probably not, but still). Conditions have been average and decent enough before this plume here and it kind of looks average afterwards to me
