  11. New Zealand weather is.... weird.

Firstly, the cyclones turn backwards (as compared with the UK, anyhow)

Secondly, there's almost always an area of high pressure trying to cross the tasman sea from Australia. Sometimes it's strong enough, or sometimes there's a weakness in it... and a subsequent low.

Thirdly, ALL the surface charts are positively full of fronts - sometimes because that Aussie high wasn't strong enough, or sometimes just because te weather in the Antarctic exists.

Fourthly, and finally, Australia is two thousand miles away. NZ is a couple of islands smack bang in the middle of the ocean.

I swear, the Met Office must send all its forecasters down here to train. If they don't, they're missing a trick!

It works. That's great, thanks. He does love a foehn effect.

The whole Northern Sun thing blew my mind too.

  13. Anyone know where I can view daily weather records from my local Met Office weather station? Is this available via a link or would I have to request it?

      jtay

No worries. It's recent observations, not historical. I think you have to contact them for that.

Just tried it. Works a treat. Register for free, retrieve your API Key from account settings.

Get your local station ID from this URL....

      http://datapoint.metoffice.gov.uk/public/data/val/wxfcs/all/datatype/sitelist?key=<EnterYourAPIKeyHere>

Substitute 3840 below, with your local station ID

      http://datapoint.metoffice.gov.uk/public/data/val/wxobs/all/xml/3840?res=hourly&key=<EnterYourAPIKeyHere>

to get hourly observations. The API is all documented on the site to access other data.

      Have fun.

Looks like you need an API key, which you can request here...

DataPoint is an unsupported service to access freely available Met Office data feeds in a format that is suitable for application developers.

Then you have access to all sorts. It says it's free, you just need to register, or use an existing account.

  15. This is great news and it can't happen soon enough! Way too many people on this planet polluting and exhausting its resources.

Nearly every country will see their populations fall as the world has fewer babies.

Hence the need for better education and the subsequent empowerment of women in developing nations, to make their own decisions.

  19. Got awful tonsilitis and feeling really poorly. But so many pharmacies have sold out of basics due to stockpiling. Had to go to 6 different pharmacies to get drugs I needed. People need to think about others before they panic buy.

Should be good. Enjoyed the earlier game. Went to see Flamengo many moons ago, in their old stadium c/w scaffolding stands, all while the Maracana was being redeveloped. Quite terrifying.

No worries. There are others in the series, listed at the end of that doc. Just change the number in the URL, i.e. 02.pdf for the Thunderstorm definition doc, etc.
