This may be well-intentioned, and I'm sure there are good case-specific arguments for lower limits on some roads: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-18840110 However, having seen councils cutting speed limits via a series of tiny incremental measures, to legislate for idiots and discourage car use, I think it will rather play into the hands of that trend- even though it's not what ministers intend.

      that would be ridiculous, 40mph is unnecessary. I think it all depends on the type of road and speed limits should be varied more freqently depending on changes in the width/

      straightness of the road. At the moment too many roads are marked as 'national speed limit'

      I certainly agree with the above. My concerns have been fuelled somewhat by the way every country lane in South Tyneside has come down to 40mph or less over the past 7-8 years. If they can do it, so can other councils...
