    Weather.....!

    Seems a long time ago, but the 2007 floods will be a "weather event" to remember.Where I live , I was so close to being flooded and for the grace of God we werent!! But given the time of year the amount of rain which fell, if it would of been January it would been a whole lot worse...!The stats for rainfall, for the Vale Of Evesham saw an incredibly wet 3 months from May through to JulyMay 96mms [4inches] Thats 1 and a half times the monthly norm Top 22c that month.June 163mms [6.5 inches] Nearly three times the norm Top 27cJuly 228mms [9 inches] Nearly 5 times the norm. Top 24c [135mms fell in one day in July] Nearly 6 inches!Point here is that the Evaporation effect really comes into play,The ground being warm in the Summer also aids in enourmous amounts of water being evaporated from the soil although it does vary given the [Albedo effect]. The sun is at its strongest during May to July and even brief interludes of the sun quickly evaporate any surface water. The evaporation rate increases with temperature and an increase of 10c will generally double the evaporation rate and given the Summer months that wont be hard to do!So a temperature of 20c which is an average temperature for the month of July in the Evesham area, will have some very high evaporation rates and any wind will further aid in evaporation and if humidities are low there will be strong evaporation even for a modest 20c. So my musings for the Floods of July 2007 do not alter the fact that the devastation was frightening, enourmous and destructive ,but if this amount of rainfall occured in January the flooding would have been even worse given very limited warmth, solar radiation, and long dark days ...Ah well ,at least we have not had to contend with too much serious flooding this Winter well apart from the devastating Cumbrian flood in November, that again made worse by the time of year.....!!

    Spring On Hold..?

    Ahhh! Last day of February and everyones attention turns to Spring. On what has been at the very least a "cold " Winter I think most folk are ready for some Spring warmth! On balance we are due some warmth now, Scotland has been in the freezer for months now, probably find a few Glaciers developing there now, and even in the south its been cold, dull wet and at times snowy. So with a cold Winter now behind us, lets put our Winter woollies away and start getting the garden stuff out and bbq cleaned up, ummmgh, slow down a bit with that idea. Its often said that a cold snowy Europe heralds a cold start to Spring. Firstly, "El Nino" years of which this is one ,often produce cold late Winters in Europe as the Jet stream moves further south than usual and high pressure [Blocking] really does not let in any really mild weather to this part of the world. At the moment computer models show no sign of anything mild in the forseeable future and this coming week looks as though we are going to be plunged deep into cold again at least for a short time. Another feature of a cold and snowy NorthWest Europe is that the ground is so cold that the surface cold will take a lot longer to warm up,than if the ground was snow and ice free [ie mild Winters]. So with all the ingredients in place it looks as though Spring will take some time to visit us, so In my opinion , it will be way into April before we see any pleasant warmth,of course it inevertable, but Yep something to look foreward too , but Spring is on Hold, well at least for a while!!

    Ok a little moan, I expect most folks are used to the amount of traffic in and around the London area! Im not...! Traveled down to the storm chase bbq at Pauls last Sunday [July 26th] did not get lost and the dreaded M25 was moving ..just..but you could hardly call it a sunday afternoon drive! As I dont use sat/nav and resort to the old fashioned AA road map and a pen and paper, I was quite chuffed with myself that I found it fairly easily! Had a fantastic time at the bbq and stayed overnight. Now Monday mornings is not the best of time to get in or out of the London area so I decided to give the M25 a miss and take the scenic route, if you can call it that! So I headed north and west via the towns of Chelmsford,, Harlow,St Albans and then to the wide open spaces of the Chilterns along the A41 which is a fairly nice drive and road and Ive never been on that road before so a new one for me, then over to Aylesbury, then over the backside of the Cotswolds. It took a good 5 hours or more for me to get home probably a good hour of that going round in circles around the towns roundabouts and another hour getting lost on the so called diversions and those diversions seem to be very common around that area! Anyway, my point, how much longer will the British roads more picticularly the southesat of England, will be able to have a road infra-structure to be able to cope with more and more traffic in the years to come? Not sure anyone will be going anywhere very quickly by then, and in my mind the answer is not to build new roads,in the long term it makes things worse...I dont know the answer, well except dont have a car, but we all need one of those and more often than not depend, on our motors, but sooner or later there will have to come a turning point.......!

    Elan Valley

    Sunday 19th of July 2009 and Dad decided to leave his Horses, Dogs and all the other animals and take a trip out to the wild and Beautiful Elan Valley in Mid Wales. He does not get out much, well hes coming up 70 and hes looking after his animals is a 24/7 job ,but this will be his first trip out of the Evesham area for many years. Anyway off we go some 80 miles west northwest of Evesham with me Mum ,dad. Stopped about halfway at lovely Leominster ,well Morrissons actually had a quick toilet break, and then on ever westwards to the wilds of Wales. Stopped just before the Elan Valley at Rhayader and had a brief walk through this very small, but most loveliest of towns , and then had a walk by the beautifull River Wye which in fact was pretty wild ,what with all the rain over the Welsh Mountains. Saw the campsite by the Wye and said to Mum and Dad I will hopefully pitch the tent here in a few weeks time ,well weather permitting that is. Its a stunning location just need some half decent weather! Jumped in the car again and next stop the Elan Valley visitors center, Mum and I have been there before but first time for Dad and before we got there we could clearly see the dam wall had volumes of water flowing over the side of it, Dad was enthralled, "never seen anything like it" he lamemented, and his digital camera was really takes a beaten! Sat with coffee and tea after looking around the centre which showed the amazing building of the dams which at the time was an "engineering marvel" and still is to be honest as those dams are over 100 years old, certainly needed more time at that place [and ive been there before]Moved on deep into the rugged and wild and most beautiful of places, despite the lightish rain [although it did become heavier!] it somewhere very special, yes remote, and Dad had a job to take the scenery in. Ive been through there many times and I can honestly say its always like the first time , it always takes my breath away, its unique splendour, remoteness, stunning scenery,something very special in this ever increasing overcrowded island.Anyway, stopped at the top resevoir called [CraigGoch] and you can drive along the dam wall to the other end. Sat in the car in the rain and thought perhaps its best to go as the rain was getting heavier, went across the dam again , but met by a car who did not want to reverse for us [as its only a one track road!] so I reversed all the way back for these sodding young kids with fairy lights on the front of there old car. I did not realize how far we had to reverse, my Dad getting a bit irrate jumped out the car as soon as we got back the other side and gave him a piece of his mind,,,,ummmgh need I say more....Well, the journey home was pleasant although I must admit I would of loved to of stayed a few days at least and do some exploring, but for Dad especially it was a memorable day and with his digital camera running low for all the pics he took, and it showed him that there is a World outside Evesham!!
