  1. Meto Weather warning issued for our region for Thursday and Friday. UK weather warnings WWW.METOFFICE.GOV.UK Met Office UK weather warnings for rain, snow, wind, fog and ice. Choose your location to keep up to date with local weather warnings.
  2. I think it is going to be a case of looking at the radar and staring out of the window for later in the week. Seriously though, I reckon based on current output there is probably a 500-600 mile difference between most southerly and northerly track for Thursday/Friday. And yes, completely agree re the southern bias in the model thread. The number of times this week has been written off by some members just because its not going to snow south of the m4!
  3. My wife and I are off for our annual week holiday up to the North Yorks Moors on Saturday, staying in our favourite cottage in Hutton Le Hole, so personally I’m hoping the 12z is on the money! A few days out and about walking in snow over the moors followed by a few beers in the local pub would be just perfect!
  4. -3.5c was the overnight low achieved just before 6am. It was actually colder just before midnight then temps rose a little, probably as tye cloud came and went. Another very thick frost everywhere, and incredibly thick where it wasn’t melted from previous days. it’s looking like a gradual turning less cold as the new week progresses, with less frost and probably a bit more cloud than the last few days.
  5. Another cold one last night with a low of -4.3c and a thick frost. We also have mist in the valley but a clear sky higher up the hill. I see the press are now starting to pick up on the potential for an SSW, with some terrible mis-reporting including mis-quotes from Nick Finnis. So far today I’ve seen that we have ‘-NAO front moving towards the UK’ and also that the UK is going to get a ‘Stratospheric Polar Vortex’. You have to laugh really!
  6. A dusting of snow in Barnsley this morning. Not especially cold overnight either with a low of -0.2c. We must have had a bit more cloud cover keeping the temps higher than expected.
  7. Cloud has thickened in Barnsley and there are few snow grains mixed in with a bit of light drizzle. Temp now 1.5c having been up to 2.3c at 9.30.
  8. Looks like the band of precip over northern England is now starting to lose intensity, so I doubt there will be much of it left by the time it reaches Yorkshire. Northern parts of the Yorkshire Dales and NYM might get a few showers from the remnants but those of us further south will just see cloud. After that its looking largely dry and cold for the rest of the week with some sunshine, so better than last week but little in the way of snow.
  9. Oh dear, James Madden has crept out from under his stone with a pronouncement! I guess this completely puts the mockers on it now. Never knowingly understated! James Madden, forecaster for Exacta Weather, said: "There is the potential for what could be a widespread snow event across large parts of the country, and this is expected around the start of next week. "The snow is likely to hit northern regions first, but we now expect southern areas to see some snow within this period. "This could be heavy in parts, and lead to accumulation, and this is likely to cause disruption on the roads and travel networks. "Northern England could see rain turning to snow in places from as early as this weekend and into Monday of next week. "People should prepare for disruption, especially on travel networks, as consistent and heavy snow showers and blizzards hit."
  10. Think I managed to get the best of the weather for walking the dog this morning. This afternoon has been grim with gusty winds, frequent heavy rain showers and a spell of fairly heavy hail on and off for about half an hour between 3.30 and 4.
  11. Hope everyone managed to catch The Big Snow of ‘82 on Channel 5 tonight. A reminder of what winters used to be like! As a teenager I distinctly remember sledging down our estate street and causing mayhem for drivers. I also recall regularly being sent upstairs with one my golf clubs to open the bedroom windows to whack the massive icicles, with the warning from my mum ringing in my ears ‘if one of those falls on someone it’ll kill ‘em’ Back to this year and it is looking increasingly likely we’ll see another week with spells of rain and temps above the norm for the time of year. Into next weekend the models are hinting at a welcome change to colder conditions with risk of snow increasing the following week.
  12. Absolutely foul morning in Barnsley with rain pouring down. Hear is clear evidence of how poor the Meto website automated forecasts are. Rainfall radar clearly showing heavy rain for a couple more hours yet forecast is for dry and cloudy.
  13. Less cold air now making it’s way across the region. Temp now up to 3.1c, and rising fairly quickly. It’s likely to feel tropical tomorrow compared to today! Now we are heading out of the very cold weather, I’ll be using the next few days to restock the log store next to the house as it is looking very depleted after running the log burner for 12 hours a day for the last couple of weeks. I also need to get out into the garden as the summer bedding plants, which had kept going until early December, are now looking pretty dead due to frost damage. I’ll hopefully also be able to get the parsnips out of the ground ready for Christmas Day, as they’ve been frozen into the ground for the last 10 days! After all that is done I’m hoping for a speedy return to very cold and this time with some snow. GFS and GEM keep tempting us with snow for our region on the boundary of the colder air to the North and the less cold air to the South, but ECM continues to play Scrooge! Fingers crossed that cold wins out before Christmas!
  14. Well the slightly heavier stuff duly arrived….as rain! Temps 0.5c and Dewpoint of -0.5c. And yet the radar shows snow! Another disappointing breakdown!
  15. Definitely looks more promising than earlier. Temps slowly climbing in Barnsley, so above freezing at 0.1c and Dewpoint -1.2c so might just get some temporary snowfall if the precip maintains intensity and temp/dewpoint stay as is when it arrives.
  16. Out walking the dog for the last hour or more and occasional flakes fluttering down the whole time but so far fairly disappointing. Maybe more to come later front keeps breaking up as it approaches. As others have commented though, today feels far colder in the breeze than anything over the past 2 weeks!
  17. I reckon we have a slightly better chance of seeing some snow falling today, even though it will inevitably quickly turn to rain. Temps are definitely colder today at this time compared to yesterday at -0.8c and Dewpoint -2c. Band of precip seems to be further East than forecast for this time, so maybe temporary morning snow followed by rain this afternoon.
  18. Just a few spots of rain here. Looking West from the back of the house you can clearly see the edge of the cloud line, which dissipates as it tries to inch very slowly East. Temp now up to 3.1c and Dewpoint 1.2c so a absolutely no chance if snow here now,
  19. I expected the band of rain/snow to head down from the North West this morning but it looks more likely that it’ll come in from the West South West. My guess is if it does reach Yorkshire it’ll already have warmed up to a level that we get rain rather than snow. Pity really because they look beefy showers. Temp is already above freezing here at 0.7c, although Dewpoint is -0.6c.
  20. Ah righto! I’m over at Redbrook. Temps actually dropped after I’d responded to you, so actually got down to -5.4c at 8.25!
  21. That’s interesting! I think you are just the other side of town to me and I only managed -4.7c as the overnight low. You must be in a frost pocket!
