  1. From the security cameras, we’ve got a covering at home in Barnsley snd it’s still snowing moderately.

We’ve been down in Helmsley this morning where it was raining quite hard, but back in Hutton le Hole and we have light snow, but only really starting to settle on the grass.  A couple of miles up the road at The Lion on Blakey Ridge there is now a good covering but the road is still passable.

Whatever happened to the potent northerlies we used to get down the east coast with frequent heavy snowshowers.seems to be a thing of the past

Agree!  Northerlies always seem to be diluted when they actually arrive, often switching to North Westerlies.   Although to be honest Northerlies rarely deliver for anyone other than those on the coast and maybe NYM (wishbone effect).  Personally, I prefer a strong East North Easterly as that benefits a wider area and can often generate streamers.

  3. Another throughly miserable day with constant drizzle all morning and temps upto 3.9c.

Next week looking colder with a chance of snow, and depending on which model you’re looking at, it’s likely to fall somewhere between John ‘O Groats and Lands End! 🤪

Just picked up this Fax chart from the mod thread, which certainly looks interesting with a series of troughs heading South towards Scotland in the Northerly flow, but wondering if there might also be some precipitation on the cold front that is straddling our region at 12.00 Sunday.  Uppers initially probably too high for snow I think but wondering if there might be a chance of back edge snow.

  4. Fabulous pics @Gary0679

A foul day here today with lots of showers in the very strong wind, and despite the weather station reading 11c at lunchtime, it definitely did not feel mild.   Even the dog wasn’t bothered about walking today.
I lost a perspex pane out of the greenhouse overnight, but managed to get it back in and it’s now strapped down with elastic bungees! 😁  Unfortunately it was recycling bin day yesterday and numerous bins were blown over so today the streets are full of metal cans, plastic bottles and paper rubbish! 🙄

  5. Still grim out there this morning and feeling chilly even though temps 4.1c with more rain to come today. Over 33mm of rain in last 24 hours combined with snow melt has produced lots of standing water.  Fields have water running out into roads and even the football playing fields near us have water standing on them.

Prospects for later this month are looking stacked with potential.  Last night 18z threw out some interesting charts in the period just before Christmas and 00z Ensembles showing a gradual drift down in temps again after some less cold temps this weekend.

  6. Was snowing moderately for the dogs last walk at just after 11pm and temps were still -0.1c. It continued to snow until around 1am after which temps slowly started to rise and the ppn turned to rain.  We’ve had light rain most of the night but lots of the snow still remains this morning, so it’s making it treacherous under foot.  Temps now 1.5c and rising.  It looks like we are in for a couple of miserable days, cold but not overly so, but lots of rain until end of Tuesday and possibly with more to come later in the week.

Temperatures still appear to be dropping, albeit very slightly - now down to 0.0c. It will turn soon, but you'll be good for a few hours yet (especially in any heavier bursts).

Yep, same here in Barnsley.  Now down to 0c Temp and -0.2c Dewpoint and continuing to snow lightly and accumulate on all surfaces.  We’ve probably had about 1cm since it started mid afternoon, so not significant but a nice surprise as was unexpected.
