  1. I suppose the people at the Express think that the film 'The Day After Tomorrow' is a documentory.......

Hardly.  The Express is denialist territory.  They are ramping this up like cold lovers on the Model thread because they know forecasts of extreme cold produce the following thought process in the uninformed: "Snow and ice?  Then global warming must be socialist nonsense designed to allow our (right wing, but don't expect joined up thinking) government to raise taxes."  Similar to Joe Bastardi's admission that he was ramping up the cold in North America to distract attention from the cyclone.

  2. Deep drifts here in Horwich, cutting off minor roads. Some people haven't been able to get out for two days (partly because some idiot got his 4x4 stuck in a drift and abandoned it parked across the carriageway, while Makinson Lane is behind a barricade of snow six feet high). Where snow cleared, the sun was enough to clear any remnants, but the drifts remain. Bitter and biting winds make the moors less than inviting!

  3. Quite frankly i am not willing to have a bad summer just so the south can aliviate their drought.

GFS18z is great, day after day or warm and sunny weather for me by the looks of it.

I had to put up with day after day of whinging about the absence of cold during the winter instead of objective model comment, so I don't see why you should be spared the anxiety of those hoping to see rain now. I live in the North West, so this isn't a personal matter - I am just capable of understanding why people feel this way. Moreover, this isn't about a purely selfish wish for extreme weather that suits my individual taste regardless of the hazard to others. It is turning into a national crisis that directly impacts on the lives of millions and has a drastic effect on the environment.

    The BBC environment reporter noted:

"The researchers emphasise there is no impact on global warning."

    Who would have thought it?

I wish someone had laid odds on this reaction!

I will lay odds on the Torygraph, Wail and Excess spinning this as evidence that the world is cooling, not warming. The notion of a redistribution of temperatures will be far beyond them.

  5. Reading all them good byes i could here Vera Lyn singing we-el meet again don't know when. Its been great the last few weeks hope its not too long till the next cold spell ,does anyone know what the forecast for this area is tomorrow as i have a event planed and i am thinking the weather will be wet and windy can anyone confirm this cheers.drinks.gif

I am sorry to say that is what the forecast suggests for this area. Rain for much of the day and strong winds. Rather cold, too. Sunny for the big match against Arsenal though.

  6. More snow and freezing temperatures in Horwich. The only good thing to report on this New Year's Day is a sighting of witch hazel blossom on a tree in Astley Park, Chorley which usually obliges with the first sign of spring for those sick and tired of winter, especially with all this involuntary skating on ice and burning up of one's pension in the central heating. One other good thing - the spikey plus thingies are excellent.

  7. Beautiful clear night last night, and I enjoyed a grand view of the blue moon with the partial solar eclipse smudging out a small arc in its lower quadrant. We've just had a light snow shower, but it has stopped now, thank goodness. Hoping to try out my Spiky Plus slip overs later today.

  8. Light snow on and off throughout the day here in Horwich along with very strong winds. Not settling at this altitude, but there are blizzard conditions up on Winter Hill and a light covering blown about by the wind up there. The ice is hanging on wherever it has been compacted - footpaths pretty lethal unless great care taken. Elsewhere, a mess of meltwater, slush and mud.

  9. Horwich is horrible today. Yesterday Winter Hill was a mound of soggy snow, slush, standing and gushing meltwater and mud. Walking through it was extremely arduous. Today the apparently clear pavements and roads, and the still snowy ones, are veneered in black ice. Stepping outside is deadly. Having spoiled the first half of my Christmas break, the damned snow and ice seem determined to spoil the second half too.

  10. Haven't a clue, John just said at the start that this will be the last ever Sunday morning edition, and from next week it will be of an evening.

Back to the forecast, a dull and mild week summed it up really!

Hang on, I've just realised - F1! The Malaysian Grand Prix is at 10am next week. Countryfile will now be 7pm rather than 11am.

This will be regular from now onwards. They seem to have given Countryfile the standard BBC One style make-over to turn it into something more "yoof" and early-evening audience friendly. Most of the old presenters have been sacked (apart from Craven and one of the other men) and replaced by Julia Bradbury, one other woman, and a line-up of dishy young guys. Whether the weather for the week ahead will preserve its old fashioned format or now be presented as if it were a pop video remains to be seen.
