  1. Have noticed that Wimbledon keeps dropping out to a black screen - don't know if that's a Sky problem or problems transmitting there?

The outside broadcast tv vans transmit a signal from wimbledon to a satellite 35000km's away

over the equator .... unless the first 10km's is blocked by heavy rain!!

If its a blue screen, that will be your sky box loosing its satellite reception for exactly the same

    reason.

If i remember correctly, the satellites only transmit 35 watts. (Less than most cb'ers did in the 80's).

  2. "Good things come to he who waits".

Late last night i posted about the surface wind forecast to change from sw to nw ... my weather station shows it did during the early hours.

For several hours now this northerly has been wedging itself underneath the plumes coming up from the south, now we appear to have a little fight going on.

My home town (wisbech) seems to be in a strange kinda rain-shadow, as so many showers seem to fizzle literally on our doorstep, then

re-activate over the heights of norfolk, for the first time this year we've had several c-g's over the town, plus we've had a few

    sharp showers.

Hopefully some more storms will creep along that cold front later, as wisbech (and north cambridgeshire in general) needs a damn good

    soaking!!

FYI my weather station is on twitter as: wisbechweather

  3. Is there any chance that those beeps on the Strike Alert in Cambridgeshire could be something to do with the lightning here?

Incidently, it's gone very quiet now... Maybe it's burnt out already?

Possibly ... the range for 3 beeps is 12-24 miles.

I think the device measures the delay between the direct radio signal and the high-altitude reflected signal, then works out the distance from the received rfi.

  4. Long time since i've posted ... but still take a daily interest in netweather.

Sorry to hear of so many people "miles" away from the forecast action sites.

Last week i had a very pleasent cycle ride from castle acre to kings lynn along the "nar valley way" ... and

after seeing so much wildlife (adders, water voles, etc) decided to go back tommorow (sunday) with the cameras.

How very convienient the highest storm risk in the whole of east anglia is actually around castle acre. (81%)

Will post pics if i snap any decent cg strikes.

  5. Heavy shower just crossed wisbech, cambs ... dumping 13mm of rain between 1600 and 1630hrs!!

Three flashes of lightning, one was seen to be cloud to ground.

.... Then a call from my works alarm receiving centre, one activation ... keyholder response required.

It was nothing more than water running down the wall in front of a dual-technolegy pir.

  6. If we get things falling into place I think we can still get a good cold winter. I like to think that the more mild winters we have the more chance of a cold one soon, I mean it's got to give sometime hasn't it?

    Hi all,

I'm a bit of a lurker on this site, but thought i'd post my comments on this thread.

If by some miracle the jet stream continues pulling low pressure over the uk, we will see a mix of freeze and thaw, every five days or so.

If it stays north as in previous years, mild, damp, mild, yuk, drizzly, blaaargh!!

But, i suspect this year the jet stream may actually run south of the uk, giving us a mainly easterly airflow.

Also, if this current "mild" weather continues, with the air temperature peaking at 18-20 rather than 25-30 during the daylight hours, surely the landmass and seas

in the nothern hemisphere are not being topped up with heat to the extent of previous years.

    Dryer but colder??

  7. The convergance zone over norfolk this evening provided very dark skies to my

east ... but to my west it was virtually cloudfree ... with the sun at 10 degrees above

    the horizon.

These pictures were taken on a nokia n73 camera phone ... 3.2 megapixel producing 1mb images

at 2048 x 1536 (obviously reduced before uploading here).

Also ... one "non-weather" picture, taken last week after sunset.

  8. A couple of light flakes in the wind here in wisbech (north cambridgeshire).

I think the eastern edge of that front will pass by the western side of wisbech

... peterborough should get some though. :yahoo:

P.S: I've got a low light camera up one of my amateur radio masts ... looking

forward to seeing a wintery scene literally "over" the town.
