Before I bang on about it in any further detail, I just wondered if there was anyone here doing weather satellite reception? I was surprised to see no hits for it on the forums, but am aware it's more a radio-focused hobby.

APT, LRPT, HRPT direct broadcast reception. Receiving images like this in your own back garden (just one instrument of many on some sats):

I'd love to see if anyone here does it as I try and learn more about meteorology and attempt to actually predict weather from the data I capture. This is my first post here, so hopefully it'll go well and maybe some folk want to actually get into this kinda thing. The initial outlay isn't too expensive.

Did considering doing it many years ago, bought the equipment  to build my own setup, but time got the better of me as did the Internet, providing most of what I was looking for. Now of course the Raspberry Pi seems a good core for such a project, unfortunately it was a passing interest, now satiated by the availability online of images from Global satellites.

  2. Buffalo, New York state was hammered yesterday, with lake effect snows, expected to deliver about 2ft of snow to the area as heavy bands of snow passed through.

The National Weather Service says the South Buffalo community received 60.5 inches, or more than five feet of snow during this week's lake effect event.

    Yes retired.

I used to pick up most of my regular bouts of lurgy from work, I'm sure. It was an open plan office (o2, Slough) but the meeting rooms were small and sweaty - not unlike my old boss, actually.

Open plan offices are great for spreading germs with people walking around coughing and sneezing. the one I worked in had 12people with a range of 10ft around me, and as you say the small meeting rooms used to cram as many people in as possible for video calls were ridiculous in size. The aircon was cold on the top floor and warmer each floor you descended. Not to be missed, now I have my own space, and time to spend as much as I want outside in fresh air.

  4. A crackin' day, great opportunity to enjoy the fresh air with the girls, and plenty of opportunity to clear the brain in the chilled heathland environment.

Plenty of frost still around in the garden and on the heath..

The girls enjoying the frosty grass.

A view from the higher area, enables me to see the fire that seems to have started over on the Studland heathland.

Hard to believe this is a man made hill, which was previously a town rubbish dump.

Then a walk back along the frozen path, with the girls easily managing to stay upright on the icy puddle.

Then back home for a drink and a snooze for them.

So faced with a choice, would you pick Salcombe or St Catherine's point to wave at the low as it cruises past, Hmm? Right so moving on.

The overnight low of -6.7°C at: 07:08 has risen to -5.1°C under a clear and sunny start to the morning.
