The usual case of showers having more chance of electrical activity the further inland you are. 😀

I think the showers start to track more west to east in the next few hours, my thinking Is this should bring more coastal areas into play, the sun might not have enough strength by then though.

I'm hoping for some showers to form over the sea this evening, should make for some interesting skies

5 & 9. My 9 is loving it. My little girl not so sure lol.

I'm glad one of your kids was enjoying the storm and hopefully  the other will grow to like them as time goes on

unfortunately my two girls 9 &12 are really scared of storms, mainly because of one they witnessed last month while in France, before that they didn't mind them too much

I was back in the UK so I didn't get to experience it, but my mother in-law said it was one of the worst she'd ever seen, so it must have been bad, I'm gutted that I missed but even more gutted it's traumatized both my daughters 🙁

Oh really? Yeh I wouldn't be a fan either.
Ha well yes we have to get storms in the first place, The patterns have definitely shifted to a more Northern area plus the Channel storm killer on the doorstep for me.
Unfortunately having done it so long and chased in the US I'm probably a bit lazy here so miss some as well.
Thanks for the info re: That Nikon, I'm going to look it up anyway.

Look up Nikon Z9 Pre buffering

    Even better, here's a link

The situation changes quickly with the location and strength of strikes as well.
You can use a lightning trigger that saves the shutter, but you can also do shutter speeds down to 8 seconds etc or longer.
I started taking lightning shots nearly 40 years ago using film in Gravesend so imagine what it was like waiting for the film to come back processed...24-48hrs then flicking through loads of empty shots then...voila!!
All my gear now is pro DSLR! All Nikon and prime lenses.

I think Nikon have released a camera that is constantly buffering in the background which is almost perfectly suited to photographing lightning, when a bolt appears in the frame you just have to press the shutter to save the image 😧

I honestly don't know how I feel about it as it seems like cheating, but then again we are delt a crappy hand in this country with the amount of storms we get, so it probably evens it up a little

Yep, DSLR here! It's actually only an entry-level one (Nikon D3200) that I got a good 7/8 years ago, but I'm so attached to it now, plus it's so expensive to upgrade! It gives me fairly good results, and at the end of the day, the lens, settings, focus etc are far more important than the camera.

It's got to the point where it needs a bl00dy good clean professionally on the inside as spots in images have become an issue! All that dust in Arizona won't have helped at all!

Agreed with everything you said,  and I would never have guessed you were shooting on entry level gear, you photos always look amazing, but I guess the proves your point!

My best guess is a decent mid range DSLR camera, then long exposure, ideally shutter speed of 20-30 second or above, wide aperture, manual focus to infinity, then processed a bit in photoshop, lightroom or similar. Hopefully one day myself I could get to the skills of Sam or others with the DSLR cams.

I know @Southern Storm and @ChannelThunder have gotten some amazing shots this year locally and abroad with likely DSLR's!

Yeah, I shoot mainly with my Canon EOS r which is more in the enthusiasts range, but any entry / mid range camera should enable you to shoot lightning

A decent tripod, shutter release Cable and patience is all that's needed, the photos that I and many other people post on here are the ones that turned out ok, but the reality is that most of the pictures you take are either devoid of lightning, or have been ruined by some other factor, wind shaking the camera, rain on the lens, forgetting to turn off image stabilization (you don't want this on if shooting on a tripod) or going to the wrong location, which is all part of the fun of shooting storms.

Oh and the most important thing of all..... You need a storm to photograph in the first place 🤣

It's a painful hobby most of the time, but well worth pursuing
