  1. Really interesting reading. Thanks Matt. Cannot wait for the LRF from you and Tony. I am just a mere avid amatuer at forecasting but your thoughts reflect my own. Nly blocking will prevail and this winter will be very different to the last two winters here in the Western Isles.
  2. Hope this is the right forum thread. I a bit bemused by the meto forecast for Stornoway, it says thundery showers on Thursday all day, which given the synopics I would say is a fair bet, But if I switch to Stornoway Airport it says dry and cloudy with no showers at all, which I find really hard to believe. I have to add Stornoway airport is about 1 mile from the town centre! Any ideas which one is correct?
  3. I remember this event vividly. as it surprised me too. white christmas followed for us up North with a pretty cold snowy January. it has much similarities to this autumn.
  4. Do we know when the net weather team is releasing the winter forecast?
  5. Good morning from North Lewis. Just had a few days of bitterly cold NEly winds bringing wintry showers to our shores. the story so far is exceptionaly dry and sunny october. I suspect that this will give way to a slightly more unsettled November. But much to get excited as we head into winter.
  6. I am sure there have been places in the highland glens that have dropped well below -22C these last few nights, it is just that we dont have many meto sites here in the highlands, only 2 in fact that are capable of getting really low temps. I was at achnasheen on wednesday at around midday and it was -18C in the sun!
  7. Hi guys, I travel back and forward to raigmore hospital every week now, dont worry we are expecting twins soon and the core temps in the scottish highlands are amazingly cold, we do have altnaharra and loch glascarnoch as observed sites but that really only tells a tiny story, it s going to be a very very long time before we see a substantial and sustained thaw in our part of the country, if we had a central scotland temp like we have a central england temp I would suspect it would read a very chilly -10C, If we do get a thaw it will be temporary before more cold air encroahes.
  8. Hi Cookie, we come from just over the water ion Skye, there certainly is a breakthrough expected for a while anyway, but I get a feeling that the greenland high will build and the scandi high will remain sturbborn for the foreseeable future.
  9. Im expecting twins in early march so some nice settled non icy weather would be nice....
  10. A question for you to ponder over, what happens to the SST when all this snow and ice melts and all this cold fresh water floods into the inland water.
  11. and you think we are joking!!! it has just gone to 0C here on the west coast on Skye and we are getting excited at the thought of a thaw, it has been bloew freezing for most of the day and night here now for four weeks, the south may have had alot of the snow, but the north has had all of the freezing bitterly cold conditions.
  12. Hi there, I come from the scottish highlands, to be frank once you get past -15C you cant tell the difference because it is sooooo cold! But it really depends on the wind, if there is even the hint of a breeze it will strip the heat from you no matter what you are wearing, thats the killer. I was out in -17C with just a fleece on at Achnasheen a few days ago and the sun was out, midday.. and it was quite pleasant.
