Worryingly Wet & Worryingly Sunless
Scorcher replied to SunSean's topic in Spring Weather Discussion
So depressing to be back in the gloom this afternoon after a glorious sunny morning. We actually had a much better first week than many areas for sunshine with 33.2 hours. Since then we've only had 3.6 hours in total before today. Is anyone else concerned we could turn into a warmer version of the Faroe Islands? It's really been a remarkably prolonged dull period with no end in sight it seems. -
kold weather July 18th 2022 was similar to some other exceptionally hot days in previous years in the south- however further north in England and in North Wales it was easily the hottest day on record for many places before it was smashed again the next day.

Don Yes anything other than above average looks unlikely to me. Can't see where any cold is coming from. -
MattStoke Pretty comical. Since that post, we've reached 30C pretty routinely in NW England every summer and have gone well past it a few times. Temps of 32C+ have become much more common.

July 2022 Heatwave - 40.3c (All Time UK Record High Temperature)

cheese Bit of a push to call Bramham Park 'in Leeds'. It's only just west of the A1. I know Leeds council has very weird boundaries that encompass a lot of rural areas (and make the population of the city higher than it should be) but I've participated in several Total Warrior events at Bramham Park and it couldn't be much more rural. In some ways it makes that temperature even more impressive though as it's properly out in the countryside. A Face like Thunder Nantwich reached 38.4C I believe on the 19th. -
Derecho It's actually fascinating looking back at this thread and seeing the posts from 2013. Lots of people were completely wrong and were dismissing the possibility completely. A few posts even said the Bawtry (South Yorkshire) temperature of 35.6C from 1906 was definitely wrong as it was impossible for it to get that hot so far north- even in mid summer. The UK all-time record is now in Lincolnshire which is almost as far north as Bawtry. 39C+ was reached quite a lot further north than Bawtry as well. Imagine their reaction if we could go back to 2013 and tell the people in this thread about the 2022 spell. They would probably fall over laughing.

Worryingly Wet & Worryingly Sunless
Scorcher replied to SunSean's topic in Spring Weather Discussion
Up to 33.2 hours of sun now here. Yesterday started sunny again but unfortunately the gloom arrived around midday and is still here this morning. Cold breeze as well. The Pennines aren't proving much of a barrier to the cloud today but hopefully we will see a few breaks through the day. -

Up to 27.8 hours here for the month and another clear sunny morning (although a cool breeze). -

East Lancs Rain There is a big difference between where you are and where I am currently near Manchester Airport. My friend who coaches at Burnley confirms this- it is a lot wetter and generally cooler up there than here. I guess comparing East Lancs with West Yorkshire is very different to comparing Cheshire or South Manchester. -

Very good start to the month here with 20.3 hours of sunshine. We may well pass February's (pitiful) total for the whole month by the weekend. The last couple of days have reminded me a lot of March 2003. -

WYorksWeather interesting how some Yorkshire folk are convinced the weather is better on that side of the Pennines. I have family in Yorkshire and my experience is that it's often cooler- especially in spring. 12.7C here today so far from cold. -
baddie It looks very decent for the rest of this week around here. This has come out of the blue to a degree so hopefully it will turn out a nice spring month.
-
raz.org.rain Yes it was- I saw lots of people overdressed in coats and hats etc. The sun has felt surprisingly warm for so early in the month.
-
12.6C the max here and almost unbroken sunshine. Much better than forecast by the Met Office and considerably milder. Rostherne and Hereford are the two warmest places in the country today by the looks of it. It shows how much the sun has strengthened now as the setup isn't that impressive but has delivered a very mild day early in the month.
-
A really beautiful day here- most clear skies all day and a unexpectedly mild max of 12.6C. A March 2003-esque day.

mcfcfan2008 Personally I would rather have an exceptionally sunny May than an exceptionally sunny August. I think there's a good few other people on here who feel the same. Sunny Mays are special with the high sun and vibrant flowers/vegetation.

February 2024 C.E.T. and EWP contests

Derecho It's based on 9:00 am to 9:00 am I think, as WYorksWeather has alluded to. So those midnight to midnight calculations don't mean that much in reality. -

Much milder this morning. Wouldn't surprise me if today ends up over 6C overall. -

Derecho No point jumping to conclusions yet (people have done this a lot in this thread in previous warmth months and been proven wrong)- those numbers are only estimates based on raw data. If there ends up being more cloud cover on Tuesday for example it could be considerably warmer than the figure you've suggested there. -

snowray temps are already going higher than forecast this morning though. Seems to be a theme at the moment for nights to be colder than expected and maxima to be milder. Probably a product of the rapidly strengthening sun in late February. The uppers aren't that cold really. -

reef It's going to be close but the last two days are now looking mild so that 5.9C looks very doable. -

The last two days are looking a lot milder now. The nights aren't looking that cold either. In this sort of setup you don't get the really still, completely clear nights that would allow temps to fall lower. There is enough of a breeze as well to keep the temps mostly above freezing overnight. -
Earthshine I will take that summer in a heartbeat but can we also have a 2018/2020 style May beforehand? . Oh and April 2020/2011 will do as well.

February 2024 C.E.T. and EWP contests
Scorcher replied to Roger J Smith's topic in Spring Weather Discussion
I still think December 2015 was the most remarkable month ever recorded as it was so much warmer than most people thought possible. At least in February the sun is considerably stronger and the days much longer so the potential for higher temperatures is far greater (even if in reality it's often colder than December). So if this month does break the record I think it will be very noteworthy, but not quite on the scale of December 2015. -

reef Interesting to hear it confirmed that it's also been dull in the east. Let's hope we don't get a repeat of summer 1993 which followed the dullest period on your list. That must have been very depressing after such a dull winter.
