  1. I remember this month fairly well. Living in Nottingham at the time... A few days of freezing temps, certainly bitter ice days one weekend, no idea which dates. Followed by some very heavy snow, which to be fair didn't hang around long.

Spot on mate! Can't understand the drama about what so far in London is a pretty ordinary June day. Its very warm yes but far from exceptional.

Yeah looks it, although I'm away from Wimbledon today in the Midlands where it's warm, bright and very windy. Doesn't feels anything special here yet at least.

Thats a fair point Dub and Staines, forgot about all that water running down. but isnt it near the lock anyway so reduced flow at times.

I find it strange that thinking back to 2018, 13, 1991 1987 and the lasting cold of 85,86, 95 ?

Why would it have frozen this time, as I think many would agree its not been "that cold" in terms of low temps until the last day or so and the point you have made in regards to a strong flow..

This does sound wrong .... I walked between Kingston and Kew regularly along the Thames in winters 09/10 and Dec 10 and can confirm huge areas were frozen over  with great ice sheets floating downstream. My friends in Shepperton further upstream talked about breaking the ice to go kayaking near the weir.

  4. Hey Walsall Wood. I remember some of those events. Don't remember Jan 86 but March 87 I remember very well. Heavy wet snow yes and a driving wind. I had a cross- country match that day in Rugeley and remember the race very well and the slow journey there- rare occasion I ran whole event with Gloves and full track-suit. I didn't do too well if I remember. I also seem to have read since that this was a relatively local event to Staffordshire and the north midlands. Sadly Dec 1990 the next famous fall I was trapped at Uni in Devon and by the time I got back the melt was full on. Some impressive drifts still about, but from what I can tell despite the huge fall not on the scale of Feb 85- perhaps because the snow was much wetter and couldn't drift so much. Feb 1991 was similar in that I was also in Devon but came back that weekend to rehearse for the only proper  live gig my band ever did at Junction 10 a few weeks later!! Certainly freezing cold and some great drifting though once again not on Feb 85 levels. I must dig some photos out from my parents collection of some of these! Oddly I don't remember snow in Nov 1988 but I vaguely remember snows as early as 1981 even or earlier.

  5. Great to hear the recollections of people. I lived just north of Walsall during those years through my early teens and remember them very well. Certain events stick in my mind. 83-43 had nothing much special but one decent snowfall in January 1984- clearly remember making snowmen, then when I got home on the sunday evening to get ready for school found out I was covered in a rash which turned out to be german measles! Two weeks off school and I never did get the hang of algebra which was first introduced during those two weeks. I remember Jan 1985 being cold and snowy but that was the build up really to the main event in early Feb- still the best snow event I've seen in the UK. Snow started early on the school day (Thursday I think and double French) by the time I went home there were huge drifts, buses and cars going no-where in Walsall- even the main roads were a foot deep and this at rush-hour! Took me hours to get home (mostly walking the 6 miles). The next few days were exploring the huge drifts that had built up, but in brilliant cold sunshine... amazing. Feb 86 was in comparison mostly dry, very cold and only light dustings of snow. Jan 87 also provided huge snowfalls but nothing like the massive drifts which we got in Feb 85. Would love to experience that again :)

  6. You can't beat a bit of hight for snow. One of the reasons I moved to the my location was I wanted to be part of the action if it snowed. I would like however, to recommend Tatsfield on the Surrey Kent border. It's mostly above 700ft. I have seen 1963 (several feet) style snowdrifts there in the 80's.

It's starting to get a bit crunchy here - starting to freeze. Wet snow has stuck to everything. Could be good for some photos tomorrow....

Yes I remember having to go up there for work in Winter 2004- huge drifts almost blocking the lanes when down in Oxted there wasn't even a dusting!

  7. Not sure about favorites, but 1999 in the east midlands seemed largely forgotten. I lived in Leicester and we seemed to have days of pleasant warmth and sun but rarely too hot or humid- also this summer I was going camping with friends almost every weekend and the hottest weather always seemed to coincide with the weekends all summer. No idea how much I drove but was off to West Wales, Norfolk, Kent, Dorset, South Wales- and every single weekend was fanstastic sunshine. I don't remember the exact date but I remember a cloudless weekend of scorching heat in West Wales in July, and its not often you can say that!!

Otherwise 2003 was a good one in West London where I am now, lasted much longer than 2006, seeming to stretch from April to the end of September and it was a time I had a lot of good friends and got out n about a lot. Good memories.

I agree with the consensus that 2007 and 2008 were appauling!

  8. Here in Wimbledon the rain has still hardly damped the pavement and the air is almost still - in fact the sun was out for a while about 15 minutes ago. Garden in bloom and birds singing so any sleetyness or whatever later will be a shock for them. My thermometer is reading 12.3C so clearly there is something wrong with that!! Although it doesn't feel especially cold outside

  9. Remember this vividly. After Blair got in it seemed initially like New Labour had laid on an early summer. I was staying at friends on the south coast and we had a picnic on the beach and went swimming in the channel on the 2nd and 3rd. I was back in Leicester by the 5th and walking across Victoria Park that evening to Uni it snowed quite heavily, although it didn't settle. Certainly a turn-around!

  10. Oh yeah and the freezing rain. Can't remember whether Jan or Feb 96- someone mentioned it earlier in the thread. The only time I have ever seen this properly- I remember watching it fall at night and thinking why is everything shining and glittering outside. Then stepping out to find every surface coated with ice- lethal. What I especially remember is being able to peel leaf shaped ice pieces off the privet at the front of the house.

  11. Really annoyed I missed most of Dec 1990- I was at Uni in Exeter (where it just rained) and it fell the night before I was supposed to come home for Xmas hols. Of course my dad couldnt get out of the drive in South Staffs and there were no trains to Brum for several days. There was still plenty left when I got home but it was well on the melt. Disappointing.

  12. I remember this as a decent winter- better than 96-97 in South Staffs. December with some cold bright days and also freezing fog and some light snow. Late Jan was cold- remember waiting for the bus in Perry Barr then Feb had one decent snowfall, probably 5 or 6 inches making the journey to work a struggle. I seem to remember frost going on for ages though- I crossed a canal every day and it seemed to be frozen over for weeks on end, but that may be just my memory!
