  1. First of all, best of luck with your purchase  B) :)

I perosnally dont leave the PC on overnight (12am to 7am), as just like you say it wil use alot of power (due to the fact it has a 650watt psu), but as with all electrical appliences its always best to shut them off overnight just incase of short circuits or overheating etc.

A laptop does seem a more appealing idea, as they only have a 60watt supply, and portable, an idea i (after reading this) am concidering. :)

thankyou cloudburst now might be the time with the dell sale 299.99 inc for a 1.5 celeron laptop with dvd burner

wish id have waited for that deal - Question - is there a uv sensor available for the wmr928 series thats somthing id like to monitor and include in the readings ive sean there are sensors but not sure if there compatible and display on the console.

  2. The 928 is a far superior weather station to the 3600. It also has a much better wind sampling period than the 3600 does in wireless mode which means it will record gusts far better.

Great stuff cheers guys the wmr928 it is then thankyou for your advice tis very much appreciated. lol hairy celt good luck on the roof maybe you can come do mine after i hate hights a step ladder is about as much as i can take. re networking yes have sevral pcs wired and wirless but hate leaving them on over long periods as you say its a power concern. Ive also been looking at a couple of 160 watt solar pannels charging 2 85 amp hour batteries to run the laptop for long periods of time. Dont think ill get full 24/7 use but say 4 out of every 7 days off the main grid would be worth it given the price on a german site for the pannels about £130 each per 160 watt panel. Seams to go well with the idea of ecology meteorology and alike. Once agian thanks for your advice guys a great help :-))

hmm on further investigation would i be better of saving the extra and going for a WMR928NX - re hairy celts post about his working perfectly with a usb converter - can i expect the same level of data from this station if not abit more than the ws3600 - seams to me to be worth the extra if it all works is solar powered and works on me lappy reducing desktop energy hungry pc power consumption.

  5. The WS3600 uses a fairly non standard way to communicate with the PC over the serial port and many usrs have discovered that most USB to serial converters don't work with this model.

Thankyou both for your quick replies much appreciated - do you know of a particular usb converter that works well ? ive looked at some belkin models at 50 pounds witch i dont mind paying if it works . or am i stumped

    thanks again

  6. Hello there great forum

I have been reading through the various posts and although there are good and bad posts re the ws3600 that’s at the top of my budget so I think ill go for that. I want to connect it to my laptop and use as an online server one problem is I don’t have serial ports on my laptop. I have found things like http://www.usbgear.com/USBG-232MINI.html but as far as im aware it doesn’t have irq/dma settings so would that affect data transmission or even make it incompatible. I have another desktop but would rather run it on the lappy given the lower power consumption. Also I have found this website regarding rewiring the wind sensor http://www.lavrsen.dk/sources/weather/windmod.htm Is this worth the effort has anyone had ago or will I blow me new kit up. Once again a great forum plenty of reading to be getting on with thanks one and all.
