Torn loyalties here, grew up in Suffolk but have been in Cambridge for a decade now, I class them both as being in East Anglia too. Hoping for more snow later tonight, had a lovely shower just before 7pm... Looks good for the weekend. In the meantime, more wine...

Greetings, long time no post for me. It has been snowing heavily in central Cambridge for just over an hour now, sticking to main roads, hmmm, may be time to leave soon..

0.8C here now, still raining though, must be at the turning point for sleet/snow soon, but roads soaked with rain now. If this froze... Now 0.4 and sleeting...

He also said that the snow currently in north Scotland is moving away east across to the continent, not south. It really weasn't an inspiring forecast unless you live in a few specific areas.

Philip Avery's forecast now was fairly detailed, but the snow fall has been greatly reduced for sat and sun on his forecast. It looks like for Sunday the only area liable to see snow according to his forecast is the edge of Norfolk by the wash and a bit of Lincs, Northants. It excluded all of essex, suffolk, cambs and further south with a bit more chance in fact to the west. Looks like London will also miss out entirely. Can his forecast still be so wrong this close?

Yes I agree and this is mentioned in the book. However, nor do we have sustained cold, regardless of the river flow. Having weeks where the temp does not get above freezing day or night simply doesn't happen. I just that whatever is said, it's just not as cold at all anymore, people get excited if it dips below freezing for more than two nights in a row these days, it's a different scale entirely.

I bought a book co-written by Michael Fish and some other weather researchers and it seem that winters past were indeed far more severe than we will know. It includes a few old photos from 1895 showing the great ice floes in the Thames, it looked like the Arctic. There were also records, and enough from enough different sources I presume to be believed, that spoke of the Thames freezing solid for many weeks on end without melting, thick ice they used to have fairs on. We simply do not see that level of freezing over a large area of any river, letalone a coastline, at present. The reasons I know not but I think that regardless of having no central heating, winters could be terrible beyond our comprehension.

Have barely an inch in Cambridge and its stopped now, can someone please tell em if any more pulses are due here?? pretty pretty please answer a ladies question.

Now the five day forecast for Anglia on tv says after tomorrow the risk of snow dies away and have forecasted rain, rain and more rain and around 7.C in general for the end of the weekend onwards...

The beebs current radar shows snow and in fact all precipitation moving fast across the country in a small round blob, passing away completely out of East Anglia by 3pm??

I would be interested to know what you think of metcheck? I hear mostly scathing comments on its forecasts, but short term, their forecasts are generally spot on for my area, and they are being highly conservative for this week. I do not have any kind of premium membership so have no access to their preferred models.

If it snows more than a dusting in Cambridge at all I'll be whooping for joy and falling out of my office window in shock. If I survive I'll be a very happy mess in the white stuff.

I was very distracted by his casual Sunday sweater, but he did appear to show a lot of snow on Weds/Thurs and then heavy rain immediately after on the maps?? I thought it insinuated an eve of some snow mid/late next week and then immediate rain to melt it away the next day. Is that not whats on the cards then? I do remember the Blue John bit, lost interest during that and it's also a Sunday, and I had seven vodkas out last night..

The most highly amusing forecaster has got to be good old Francis on Sky News. The man is a legend, utterly, utterly useless, its almost like he has forgotten his lines, every single time, and he clearly doesn't care either way what the weather is, his confused and world weary tone and drunken hand wafts are brilliant. He is as effective as Ulrika Johnson was on Good Morning Britain a decade ago.

I think for anyone who continues to disbelieve the evidence for global warming - ask a polar bear... I think the attitude of "why should I bother when the big global corporations don't", is preposterous. If we all used energy saving bulbs, recycled all our rubbish and resticted driving our cars, it would make a huge difference. Its not the individual effort, but the tens of millions of every man making that individual effort across the globe that makes the difference to climatic change and pollution, which is why in my opinion there is no excuse for the ignorant to not do anything about it. I think such blind people should do some research. But, regardless of the details, until The US and emerging Asian countries accept and do something real about the amount of chemicals they are pumping into the seas and sky, the problem will continue. Unfortunately that is less important to the governments than making money today, and letting future pen pushers worry about it, its a viscious circle, and in the meantime, another part of the earth dies. How much of the planet has been de-forested in the last 200 years? How can this not affect the climate... I try to use energy saving bulbs, I recycle everything that can be, but in Cambridge they are very hot on recycling and its impossible not to, as bins are collected fortnightly. Since re-cycling I find in two weeks the black bin is still barely full, compared to me previously having to have to squeeze the lid down, which shows just how much I used to throw away needlessly. I also do not drive, rely on short trips on buses. Another point is that if people are supposed to get out of their cars, make the public transport efficient and affordable, and stop putting prices up for bus tickets twice a year for an underfunded and late service with bad routes, rude drivers and dirty buses.
