Love the sea .. my Mum and Dad moved from London to the Coast when they retired. I find it peaceful and relaxing, the sounds, smell and the way it stretches into the horizon. Maybe one day I will live by the sea .. probably not though given my finances.

My question is could this virus spread all over the country and into others B)
If it is a virus it could travel via people using airplanes etc visiting foreign countries .. unless it is airborne in which case it would travel of its own accord. Let's hope not though.
-
Incredible! Could be an offworld virus or it could be a reaction (radioactive) from the meteor itself - who knows .. very interesting though.

Beautiful photos Marie - the second one is absolutely surreal!!! Welcome to Netweather,

I live in Bromley and the ground where the grass is in my garden has cracked thru the dryness. Unbelievable!!! But it is a chalk based soil

Can you imagine a London underground tube full of people in summer who did not use deoderant or wash their hair or other bodily parts! Still.. I suppose it would reduce the crowding on the tube!!!
I love my bath and I use MOP on my hair (Modern Organic Products) shampoos which you can obtain from the wonderful QVC satellite shopping channel and it is all natural ingredients!!! And living in a house with 19 cats, I need a bath at LEAST every other night after cleaning up after that lot - the hair they drop is incredible!!!!
-
I want a mild winter so I dont have to stand in the freezing blipping cold and snow waiting for a train/bus etc only to find it is cancelled due to bad weather conditions!!!! Blaaaaaaaaa!

How depressing
Of course we can't raise the alarm because the 'you're scaremongers or, indeed, alarmists' or 'it's just scientists on the make' or , (and I've seen these) 'who gives a **** about whales anyway?' types will be all over us
I think we live in times when concern for the environment is on the wane not the up. I really don't think 'save the whales' would work these days - too much 'Clarksonness' about.
It is depressing to read that .. it is even more depressing or rather unbelievable that some people just do not want to believe GW is/could be happening at all - but it is the same old story - too little done, too late. Perhaps when a tornado scours the face of Great Britain and then the sea rises up and covers the land mass that is left, it may get some attention.

Here you go ...
The answer lies in their thickness – and how far we can see through them (ie: the visibility). If we can see less than 1 km through the cloud of water droplets, it is known as fog. If we can see between 1 and 2 km, we call it mist.
Key fact: although mist and fog look like smoke, they are actually tiny drops of water floating in the air. In fact, they are clouds that have formed at ground level.
Condensation... Mist and fog usually form at night when the air is too cold to hold all its moisture. Clear skies mean that the ground gets cold and it then cools the air close to it. This cool air causes condensation and water droplets form in the air. Fogs are thickest when the air can hold a lot of moisture.
Formation... Although mist is not as thick as fog, they are both formed in this same way. Mist, however, usually stays closer to the ground and you can see over the top of it. Mist is often seen on autumn mornings when nights get longer and cooler again. This is particularly true in valleys, because cold air sinks down and collects in the valley during the night.
Mist and fog also form over areas where there is plenty of moisture, such as river valleys, lakes and harbours. If warm air meets cold seas or waters (or any cooler surface) then condensation will once again occur and fog will form. This explains the example of San Francisco, where the Golden Gate Bridge is often surrounded by mist and fog. This is formed as the warm California air from the south is chilled as it blows over the cold sea currents in the Pacific.

How big is it? Very small (1-2 mm in length) could be fruit fly Drosophila. These normally have dark body and red eyes, common around rotting fruit, got any fruit trees nearby? Many, many different types of fly of this 'ilk' mind you.
If it's bigger then it may be easier to ID as there are not too many bigger flies with a red body.
Yes it is about that long and it is driving Reception mad - thanks for that though - they were worried they might be biting flies being as when they are flattened by a newspaper they leak red blood !
-
I don't have a picture of it but our reception is plagued by them - with have had rentokill in who said it was a plant fly !!!! But the plants have been removed and the flies still persist! UKKKK!
Any info appreciated! B)

If Oon wore a woolly jumper he'd be hunted down by Big Foot enthusiasts.
 .. the hairy gorilla type then!!??
-
OON's been trying this with sheep for years........
OON - your secret it out!!!! All because he won't fork out for a woolly jumper!!!! (please no inuendo's .. mind you, it could be interesting!)

Mules don't seem to have wreaked havoc with the planet, so I'm not going to worry just yet.
X-Men has a lot to answer for.
However donkeys and horses are of the equine family

Even if they were developed past embryo stage, the chances of such an feotus being viable are negligable... the point though, is that they won't get past embryo stage. The reason they wan't the embryos is not for purposes of having a bet on what happens, but is in an effort to aquire stem-cells to further research in what is a very promising area of medicine. I'm not completely conviced that it's worth all that much though I must confess.
It isn't ideal though, I must admit... It wouldn't be nessecary at all if there wasn't such controversy over "pure" human embryo's.
I am interested though... what are people disgusted with exactly? that a mostly human embryo could be defiled with another animals DNA, or vice versa, or is it the idea of something so different, or ... well, anything really ("not natural" is a vague answer that doesn't really get to the root of the issue).
Well for my part - it is not because it is "human" crossing with an animal - it would have the same affect on me if it were a pig being crossed with a lamb - it is not natural. It could also throw up new problems, new viruses, etc. I don't think it is wise to meddle with nature in that way. And I would imagine (and this is only my conjecture) that one bright spark will let the embryo grow to see what happens and what can be gained from it at 9 weeks, 16 weeks, etc ..

thats disgusting.....just think in one hundred years time we will have mutants...the worlds getting sicker by the decade......
Tell me about it - one can only imagine the horrors that will follow on from this.
-
Now this is something which I think is totally wrong
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/6978384.stm
However, that is just my opinion - but mixing animal and human genes just goes against normality.

Filski,
maybe you don't 'want' to believe in day after tomorrow scenarios?
Surely when you look at the growing body of evidence that points to this being far more than a climatic 'blip', and see the predictions from the 80's not only made flesh but in 'runaway mode' (seemingly constantly surprising the science) you can see that this is much more than 'several years' worth of ongoing change.
Times Atlas announced this week it is re-draughting the world atlas as so much has altered since it was last drawn (giant Lakes empty, coastlines changing, islands disappearing and the odd one appearing ...Warming Island off the coast of Greenland which was thought to be a part of Greenland until it's 'ice bridge melted this year!).
Since we have had satellites capable of giving us many differing datasets logging the changes over the face of the globe we can all watch from our homes as the changes occur before us (the Larsen B collapse or B15 Calving off The Ross,Arctic ice loss) if we don't care to trust the scientists we can just take a look ourselves.
I wouldn't dare to predict how this deck of cards will come down but it will come down.
The Day After Tomorrow could happen - even if you look at it non scientistically - the first ice age was the dinosaur age wasn't it - well the earth was young at that time and volcanoes were throwing up lots of CO2 and emissions into the atmosphere - would that perhaps be analogous to what we are doing with our pollution of carbon emissions, etc today? Perhaps it will get to a certain point and that will be it, it can take no more. I don't claim to fully understand it at all and I don't study the science of it either, but it would seem logical to admit that it could possibly happen in the future.

Have noticed a lot more Swallows in the last few (pleasantly warm, sunny) afternoons than during most of the summer. Possibly due to those stopping off en route from further North to enjoy conditions that are perfect for flies/bugs?
My lot were less in number this year and they didn't nest in the eaves of the house like that have in prevous years either.
-
He wouldn't tell me, perhaps you'll have more luck
Well I had a little hunt on the internet and it basically says that coming up to winter the earth is nearer the sun due to its eliptical orbit ..
link below, but not sure if that is the answer ..
http://www.scienceu.com/observatory/articl...ns/seasons.html
another link here - this one says the further we are from the sun, the warmer our planet is!!

However, this is probs like teaching you all to suck eggs, but I was just curious
