  1. Have just seen Chris Fawkes, he was talking about temperatures dropping towards the end of next week, and then said with a twinkle in his eye,' could be the start of something for the rest of the month'. Then Football Focus came on and they said ' we will be looking at the Great Freeze of 1963'.... spooky!
  2. Thanks Coast and Speed67, you've given me some great ideas! Only problem I have now, is that what started out as a birthday present, is now turning out to be a bit of a spending spree. Looks like I'll be doing a lot of reading over the next few weeks! Once again thanks for your help. Regards Loraine.
  3. Hi all, can anyone recommend a book about the 1987 storm, preferably one that has a few photographs. Had a quick look on Amazon, not much on there. Would be very grateful, as I'm looking for a birthday present. Cheers Loraine.
  4. News 24....Rob McElwee has just said that it will be cold next week. :excl: :excl:
  5. Temp 2.3c at the moment and dropping. Had some very light snow earlier. Hoping by the end of next week we'll be tapping into the very cold continental air again.
  6. Thoroughly enjoyed the snow programme last night, especially the footage from 1962-63; amazing! Hope next week will be just as good.
  7. Have just seen sky advertising 'earth day' for Wednesday 22nd (tomorrow). A couple of programmes stood out. One was called 'Extreme Ice', which is on National geographic at 7pm, and the other (which I can't watch because I don't have HD), is 'Little Ice Age : Big Chill', which is on History HD at 9pm. Don't know if they'll be any good, might be worth checking them out though.
  8. Yes I lost a lavender, but nothing else plantwise, but what I did lose were several large terracotta pots! I was constantly amazed at my monster of a honeysuckle, which when the frost appeared seemed to wither and droop, and when the temps picked up miraculously perked up again. When we had the heavy snow and prolonged cold spell, I really thought it was a gonna, but no it's sprouting even more profusely since we've had the rain and warmth, a real survivor!
  9. Just watched the first part of a new three part documentary series on BBC 4, about the weather in this country. Pretty good, lots of archive footage, history, facts and figures etc. First programme was about rain, next week SNOW! It's on Monday night, BBC 4 at 9pm, have a look.
  10. June 5th Cheshunt Hertfordshire, need the weather for B.B.Q.
  11. Dull and overcast, no signs of any brightness. Very still. Temp : 12.7c Humidity : 77% pressure : 1010
  12. Mmmm, you know what, this Winter actually felt like a real Winter, something I haven't felt for a few years. Some one posted that we had seen snow every month somewhere in this country since October, fantastic! That said, although we had longer periods of cold, with Easterlies at times, snow was in short supply, though when we got it, well the photo gallery says it all! Some very memorable events, and my children's first proper snowman in years.
  13. The longer days, and the warm sunshine definately do raise the spirit! We spend so much time indoors during the winter, eating comfort foods, exercise less, it's like we come out of hibernation! I did some gardening and sorted out the garage, (where does all the junk come from?). A lovely day, but you know what, I'd still like to see a last wintry blast!
  14. Had just under an inch of snow last night, but about 9.30 it started to rain. Temp at the time was 1.4. Got up this morning and there was just a little left on the lawn and cars. Gutted! Hopefully we will see some more snow in the near future. Looks like there might be the first signs of something more cold in about 10 days time.
  15. These pics were taken around my house, hope we get some more soon!
