  1. After going to Hull then Bradford, one thing to say:
Please, no rear fogs in rain. The pretty red light turns into lots of tiny red stars and is very nauseating. They're made for dense fog not spray.

Anyway, putting that aside, I've been occasionally catching up with what's going on. Thinking of anyone in flood zones and please be safe.

  2. All I want is a decent breeze to cool the house down and some decent rain to wash the solar panels. The A/C cost last week was £45, solar feed in from the roof is poor as the panels are very dirty.

A/C may come back out today when I finish work. I put it away and opened the window for some air but the sun still has quite the bite still.

    This one’s less than £50

Do you need an effective but economical solution to avoid the heat? Our All-in-3 portable air conditioner cools, humidifies and purifies your indoor...

Those don't work. they're tiny swamp/evaporative coolers. They make indoor humidity skyrocket.

Proper evaporative coolers may work outside if the humidity is low enough.  Indoors, these type of coolers work best with through airflow and low humidity.

  4. I'm glad and very fortunate that we got the July we did, it made a massive month long project in Sunderland way, way less stressful and enjoyable.

At home I just run the a/c and forget about the outside. This weekend I won't open the curtains or leave my bedroom.... partly heat, partly decompressing after another stressful week at work. Heat just makes the day job alot more stress inducing.

Have a look at the IQOOL-SMART15HP these are a halfway house between having a portable Air con with a hose hanging out of the window and a full blown split unit with inside and outside units as they don't need an outside unit hanging off the wall or planning permission in areas which may require it.

They can be DIY fitted too as they come pre-charged and so no need to have approval to handle and connect refrigerant gases. They just need a couple of 7" holes core drilled and a smaller one for the condensate.

They are also heat pump based, so you get cheaper heat from the unit during Winter too.

They are more expensive than a portable air con but are more flexible having the heat option and not having to stuff up gaps around an open window. If I wanted to just cool down a small building or certain rooms, £850 a unit will work out far cheaper for heating / cooling 3 or 4 rooms than a full blown Heat Pump system along with the upheaval of lifting floor boards and carpets to lay new piping, fit massive radiators and the cost of specialist fitment. These can be fitted yourself or by the local handyman service.

One thing to keep in mind is that the UK has one of the highest Electricity prices in the world at 30p / kwh, and with Wind and Solar often only generating 5% of our total grid needs I don't see reliance on CCGT powered by expensive Gas to generate the bulk of our energy changing for at least the next decade. So I think for house heating then Gas and even heating oil will still remain the cheaper option for a while regardless of what the Government and Green Taliban say. They simply haven't got anything else to switch to, in order to make it cheaper!. So the running costs should obviously be kept in mind. This unit will cost just over 30p an hour to run in Air con mode at current average prices, but under 30p for heat.

I have relatives in Jersey who pay 18p kwh for Electricity and 8p kwh for Heating Electricity (similar to E10). That price is with both Jersey Electric and the French Energy company they buy it from making huge profits! so it just shows how much over the odds we are paying here

Buy electriQ iQool 12000 BTU Wall Mounted Smart Air Conditioner with Heat Pump - No Outdoor Unit Needed from Aircon Direct

In reality i'll probably just check local laws and get a mini split in my room, or replace the current 8 year old Trotec twin hose portable, i'll probably get a spare one over winter and store it in the spare bedroom. My electric bill is high anyway, I don't even try and conserve.

I usually don't seal up the exhaust on single hose units as they create negative air pressure which results in hot air coming in from the home via any opening to the outside in the house. I'd rather place the unit below a window, put the hose out and leave a gap for it to draw in air to replace what it exhausts. Need min 10-12000BTU unit for that to work well. Anything smaller won't cope.

  6. I'm researching proper heat pumps, not the half a heatpump system that the Gov are pestering us to get. I want a heat pump that will do heat and cold. Future plan it...

It would necessitate the removal of all the radiators and convert the house to an air based heat/cool system. In these homes, that won't be simple with the location challenges with a ducted USA style system. Indoor cassette units in every room would look ugly both inside and outside with the numerous linesets.

  7. I do deliberately wear a fleece, though I took the jacket off. Stops sunburn and it's no hotter... infact it's a little cooler as it blocks the sun.

It doesn't half trigger people. It's not intentional.... I keep my jacket with me as it's got the asthma meds and other stuff in it.

You can also get fittings for the window how good they are I don't know though. Probably cheap rubbish from china. Have a look on Amazon.

Dunno about car aircon. My least three cars seem to struggle once it gets to 30c and provide a limited relief.

My new work car was terrible, the front windows are not solar shielded and it was literally a greenhouse on wheels.  I had to pay for a local firm to solar tint the windows, made a massive difference. I miss the last car, the a/c was never turned off.

  9. I gave in and have had the a/c running 24/7 since Tuesday night, set to 23ºC. That's not because I necessarily hate the heat, I can cope to a degree (pun intended) with ibuprofen to keep migraines at bay.

I simply won't sleep well enough. something I don't want as my job needs me to be alert and it has driving as a significant part of it. It's costing me about £7/day on this new tariff, since it's on overnight.

Anyways, hopefully there's some spectacular elevated storms from this spell. Don't want the dangerous storms......
