  1. Horrible day, getting on for 12 hours of constant rain now, and it's often been heavy. Not hit 16C this year- only 6 years now later since 1996: 2016- 21 April 2013- 15 April, that one will probably be passed 2008- 22 April 2006- 25 April 2001- 8 May (!!) 2000- 29 April So it's definitely late. A real mixture of summers in those late years.... but Dec-March really did seem similar here to 2005-6, there's another parallel in April.
  2. June 1996 at Shawbury: 19.2/7.7C, 29.5mm, 252hrs July 1996 21.3/10.2C, 23.6mm, 227hrs Aug 1996 21.1/11.3C, 47.2mm, 174hrs That summer was a lot better than I always remember it as, it is overshadowed by the previous year and the average temps weren't spectacular; but it had far more dry, sunny weather than I credit it with. On the other hand: June 2020 19.9/11.1C, 108.4mm, 137hrs July 2020 19.5/11.5C, 36mm, 118hrs Aug 2020 21.5/13.0C, 137.6mm, 113hrs That one was almost as dull and wet as 2012, yet it's not one that immediately springs to mind when I think of poor summers. I think it is the sunny spring that preceded it, the ending of the first lockdown and the fact that August was quite thundery (unusual for post-2007 summer months here) that combine to send it under the radar.
  3. 1993? Very unremarkable spring, remember it being unsettled but not too wet, no early warmth or late cold snaps. Then a summer that was just consistently cool, apart from a short spell I remember in late June when there were a few warm sunny days. Only hit 25C one day that year, several days in the second half of summer struggled to top 15C. Often cloudy as well but not as wet as some poor summers. It was in many ways similar to summer 2011 but without the out of season warm spells.
  4. I rather enjoyed spring 2021; record warmth in March and then a remarkable April that was one of the sunniest and driest on record but still produced lying snow and more frosts than some entire winters (13/14 and 19/20). Then May- yes it was wet and until the last few days, cold; but there were those thunderstorms with big hail here on the 11th (4 overhead storms in one day). And the contrast in how late all the plants were in coming out with the previous year was striking. And it finished with a few warm days. Spring 2018 really didn't appear to happen weatherwise- it just seemed to flip from deep winter to high summer around the third week of April and not change back. Memorable spring months but no actual spring! It's hard to pick the worst; 2015 didnt top 20C until June but April was sunny and dry. 2006 had a poor April and May after an interesting March, 1992 had a brilliant May after a grim March and April, 2000 was pretty awful apart from a warm spell I recall in early May. 2009 was just very boring: nothing that I recall in March or May, and April had no maxima below 10C or above 18C.
  5. Max depth slightly more on 12/3/06 (12cm vs 9) but last week had as much as then in total if you combine the 2 falls together.
  6. 12th March 2006 biggest snowfall of the 2000s here (biggest between Dec 1995 and Dec 2010 in fact). There were also a couple of lighter snowfalls in the first few days. This extended winter really does remind me a lot of 05-06; a cold snap in December that was a real let down snow-wise, a slight dusting in Jan but nothing more, and lots of boring dry cloudy weather that was often quite cold but produced nothing of note. Synoptics were often quite good-looking but the weather disappointed. Then March rescued it, just like this year..... The other time that March really rescued a disappointing and frustrating winter was 1994-5 (again a snowless cold snap in December and a bit of snow in Jan)- but that one was much wetter, it was a kind of 2013-14 with more temperature variation.
  7. Rain hail and sleet here this afternoon, this latest downpour is looking distinctly closer to all snow Edit: big wet flakes now!
  8. Depths here were equal to early Mar 2018 and Jan 2021, last time it was deeper was Dec 2017. This extended winter reminds me a lot of 2005-6; that also had a cold snap in December with very little snow, a brief dusting in Jan, was often fairly cold but boring, dry and cloudy- until March saved it with that snowfall on the 12th. 1994-5 also saw March rescue a disappointing winter (although that one was much wetter). Big snowfall in first half of March= decent summer? 1995, 2006, 2018.... and 2023?
  9. Still a few flakes blowing around, 9cm measured so completely restored where it had melted.
  10. Snow here too, yesterdays depth looks pretty much restored. Wind still strong
  11. @Don I was wondering where you were, I was worried you had gone somewhere and missed a very rare occurence! Treasure the memory and keep the pictures somewhere. It doesn't happen very often!
  12. Big flakes of snow in this latest shower, touch snow covered wood it's moving down the A53 (road that goes from Shrewsbury to Buxton), still about 4cm lying here The Gloria Gaynor snow???
  13. Blowing an absolute hooley, precip stopped, feels warmer than 2 hours ago when we had a rain shower at colder temps than the heavy snow at midday, but the snow on the grass and most pavements has survived, expecting more snow tonight. It's messed up. But saw deeper snow today than at any point in that crap 2009-10 winter. That'll do if we see nothing more
  14. Last shower was just rain, although it feels just as cold as before. Not been above 1C today and dp barely above zero so surely any precip will be snow later. Still have about 5cm on the grass but very slushy/wet on roads
  15. Yet here today has been a really good event and December was utter rubbish, Jan we had a little bit but mostly missed it. It's weird- hard to see how Albrighton (presume it's the one east of Telford) would have missed out when Shrewsbury, Telford and the Black Country for once all had a decent fall
  16. Only 10-15% here at most, paths and roads have gone slushy and been dripping off walls and hedges since 2pm, but basically everything still covered. Bits of sleety snizzle since the last of the snow but no heavy rain, hopefully that stays the case.
  17. Stopped now, if that was the occlusion it was all snow here. Still big chunks falling off walls and plants but no serious thawing so far
  18. Telford guys saying rain, if this is on the way over there it wont be 20230309_124912.mp4
  19. Big flakes coming down fast after it stopped for an hour or so. Still all covered, they seem to be sticking where it has fallen/blown off things
  20. Pepped up in last hour, just been out with the ruler as its 9am and we have 7cm level! March to the rescue....
  21. Already the biggest non-lockdown snowfall since March 2018, with about 3cm on the ground (Had 9cm in Jan 2021). And more now than in any February since 2009....
  22. Yes disappointing to see a lot of it has gone from the roads (though it's still on the grass and everything else)- and the snow that's recently started isnt covering them again yet. Even a report of rain at Birmingham airport at 0450
  23. Lying snow in April at 09Z* since 1987 here: 1989, 1998, 2012, 2021 All 1 day and 1-3 cm, So about once a decade on average. But has happened twice since the last November lying snow in 2010. *Remember that's 10am BST in April! Have seen a few other years with sticking snow in April but not lying at the right time, it has to stay till well past sunrise
