  1. Sceric west of London recently. Also I saw a gorgeous Cb off to my NE earlier this afternoon (sadly no pics).
  2. I'd go with mid March to October too, although it's officially (for me) when I start revisiting here Had my eye on Sunday for a few days now - looking good for some isolated rumbles quite widely!
  3. A perfect day to describe as MEH! Awful! As regards storm risk...I could not even begin to postulate about what may or may not happen. Sky is a perfectly sweeping grey with not even the slightest bobble visible...it's like someone's thrown a purply/grey watercolour mix and brushed it in neatly (how Dan Corbett, lol)
  4. Strikes me (haha!) that it could have been a CC/CG strike combined, or alternatively a low arcing CC. There was an awesome video circulating on facebook of a storm in Belgium or possibly the Netherlands from over the weekend and that was exactly as you describe - appearing to drop from the cloud then connect with another forming a horse shape bolt. Scientists are still learning about what lightning is and how it forms, so I doubt there is going to be a conclusive answer for you. Most likely in my opinion is that an adjacent cloud offered better electrical discharge than the ground and so, for whatever reason it followed that path to the adjacent cloud rather than through the ground. I would imagine it would be more evident on thunderstorms with bases closer to the ground than those which are more elevated - this would in all likelihood accentuate the visual effect. I have noticed though that all storms behave differently; some have a tendancy to be predominately IC/CC, while others a higher proportion of CGs; some have a higher proportion of +ve CGs than others; some deliver fatter or thinner bolts; the most notable and obvious 'behavioural' aspect of storms is the thunder, sometimes lengthy explosive peels, other times light crackles and no more (regardless of whether the bolts are within a few hundred metres or a few miles away).
  5. Just had a couple of close positive CGs - the thunder is AWESOME!!!
  6. Yes just woke up that's what I can here - for the sake of variety the storms are following exactly the same track as those last night - I said to my Mum and Dad at this rate there'll be awful flooding in the channel!!!
  7. Now I have 3G back I can update - after all I've seen this year, I thought I'd seen it all for lightning intensity. The storm going on currently out in the channel (to my East) is easily kicking out 60 strikes per minute (that I can see!) including some stunning anvil crawlers now and again. Cannot believe I forgot my camera!!!! Ok what we had overhead was heavily elevated bar a couple of CGs (and one very loud peel of thunder) and the rain whilst initially torrential was largely moderate. But what I'm seeing out to my East is just breathtaking and piddling over all of the awesome electrical storms I've seen in the UK this year. Simply incredible to think I went all the way to the U.S. when I can make the effort and come to the coast more often. I hope there'll be footage/pics posted tomorrow which vindicates my assessment. Fingers crossed more might pop up later (haven't checked yet)... Edit - just checked and all looking very quiet on the western front bar a few cells over NW France...think a number will be disappointed it hasn't been as widespread as some models had pointed towards but even here on the far SE coast it's been scraps compared to the channel show! It's like Phil The Power Taylor on acid and throwing the occasional dart coastbound out of sympathy. Can keep our fingers the low kicks the atmosphere more widely into life but I'm not placing any bets now. Night all PS - I hope the "Stupid channel kills storms" crew are watching this...these lunatic cells have barely touched land the past few hours and it's categorically the most incredible lightning display I've seen possibly ever in the UK - even more than early July this year!
  8. Wow some of these IC forks now really close - pretty much coming overhead.
  9. Ok not going to be walk as far as I had planned!!! Incoming quickly!!!
  10. Have to say not encouraged by Blitzortung in the slightest - looks to me like this lot will miss too not giving up hope yet!
  11. I can see lightning flashing way off to my S and SW now - woohoo!!! Thought I could hear a very distant rumble a short while ago - just got to hope it keeps its energy Oooohh that was a much brighter flash and lovely deep peel of thunder Flashes becoming more frequent now too
  12. Oh 'ave a look at what's firing off over N France Fingers crossed it all holds together as that lot is tearing towards the SE-UK currently
  13. Yep definitely concur, me, my mum and bf just got back from a walk down to the seafront - absolutely stunning display, flashing certainly every second (sometimes multiple per second) across the whole NE/E/SE sky line, occasional deep rumbles - groups of people steadily turned up to watch and there were a few solo viewers (I had pangs of empathy). Was gazing to my SSW hoping for some potentially inbound flickers but could only make out reflections from the Belgian/French beast. Based on model runs/charts shown earlier this is so far going to plan, initially active cells missing the Kent coast, with more widespread popcorn action developing nearer midnight through to the wee hours. Not over yet and if we get anything remotely like what I've just watched, hummana hummana hummana
  14. Sky to the east and south going ape - continuous lightning and occasional rumbles. Looks stunning!!!!!
  15. Seen my first few flashes off to the south and South East Fingers crossed tonight's action comes a lot closer Edit - just saw a nice IC fork.
  16. Fine place I say! Between us two and TN26 hopefully we'll have a lot to report. Can see some cauliflowers off to the east though didn't notice any flashes yet.Northern France going nuts - like last night, question mark is where the storms will track. Need a more NE shunt than the ENE track last night!
  17. Not as forecast by estofex. They have anticipated initiating as far west as Brittany. Kent eh? Will let you know Can see towers way off to my East.
  18. Looool May have had a couple of Cuba libres to get in the Caribbean holiday spirit I'm a few sheets to the wind now - so any temperature/humidity commentaries I give maybe deduct a smidgen for the true feel.
  19. Fab, cheers Nick as ever Been been very keen on t'storms for later and are continuing the liberal smattering of lightning symbols. Another swathe of mid level stratiform cloud spilling in from the SW here in Dymchurch, tempering temperatures slightly but is really nice and warm (and humid) nevertheless. Keeping my fingers crossed for some storms later - the one thing I've been hankering for is a classic storm with loud, peeling thunder. I'm not too fussed about severe/disco lightning - just nice heavy rain, flash, loud peel....that'll settle my lust for 2015 Storms last night were really nice to watch, with occasional deep roars rolling off the channel as I was dosing off! Magic! Good luck all - let's hope Mother Nature throws some fun or way...based on the conditions here currently, I would say we are ticking the necessary boxes (bar any obvious AcCas or similar) I can assure, if there is and subject to maintaining the rare 3G, I will keep you all updated
  20. Sun been out for a while here now, now fairly oppressive heat and humidity despite the breeze
  21. I can confirm it is VERY warm here on the E Kent coast. Sun has been in and out all day, nice humid breeze. Estofex recently issued an MD covering the level 1 area previously issued, so not including any UK area, except Channel Isles. I'm dubious as to exactly what the coverage might be - my instinct tells me the MetO may be overplaying it slightly, but hope I am wrong naturally
  22. The Beeb precip model shows good chance for thunderstorms across the far SE tonight (conveniently I'm staying Dymchurch) although I'm well aware of how unpredictable it is and historically how unreliable the model the Beeb relies upon can be. Pleasantly warm here with a notable breeze. Fingers crossed some of what I saw last night visits properly
  23. I have now, a few really impressive flashes This lot definitely sliding past - might get luckier later if more storms fire further west
  24. Just heard a lovely deep rolling peel from the channel - though haven't seen a flash yet! Odd
