Well, I decided to go out and give the bugger a chase
Managed to catch the blighter on the other side of the M1 - drove straight into it and it was like a scene from an apocalypse movie!
Pitch black, flashes all around me, big BIG booms of thunder and the rain was amazing..
Drove back a bit as it passed and tried to take a few pics/videos
Was lucky enough to get the following just as I started the video - have slow-mowed the strike as it 'appeared' to hit one of the M1 Motorway signs.

Continued back towards home, stopped off and took a few pics of the back-end of the storm and to contrast, the lovely blue skies that followed it..

Just when I thought the cell was quietening down, it explodes again...
Jeez the tension!

Derby & Leics cells joining forces perhaps?
If so....................

That beast is heading for us!
Is sure looking that way...according to my detailed scientific investigations, we are right in the firing line
(ok so I held a stick against the screen on the live lightning strike webpage - so shoot me!)

Reports coming in of a fatality - sad news indeed..
"
A man thought to be in his 70s has been killed at Bremhill near Calne while trying to remove a tree which had brought down power cables, say Wiltshire Police. They say he is believed to have been electrocuted."

Wow - that was intense!
Short but very strong. Hail and a couple of VERY close CG strikes - lights flickering on and off
A nice surprise that was

Thunder here and verrrry dark sky to the south...

Thunder to the south of here

My god that was a storm!
Had to walk home from the bus stop in what I can only describe as monsoon rain...comfortably warm but boy, did I get wet!!
The drain covers were bubbling water and the cars had to drive down the centre line on the hill, due to the 4ft wide river either side
Constant lightning and massive booms of thunder - really seemed like an apocolyptic scene...
Sure wont forget this evening in a hurry!
Still rumbling away here - am hungry for more!

Just a couple of vids I managed to make from tonights. storm - most of the strikes are around the 35 second mark.. lol (apart from 'strike x' which is a corker!!) http://youtu.be/zmxos3btQRk http://youtu.be/2CdFGJLSlTU http://youtu.be/-tvOdmx48Vw http://youtu.be/31XtYy2TRb4

Wow that was quite some storm... extreme heavy rain & almost constant strikes. Best one I've seen in a long time!
Just arriving here in mansfield proper.....loving it!

very distant but frequent rumbles of thunder to the south of Mansfield

The missus has just reported panic buying at Sainsbury, Wokingham - took her 2 hours just to get around the place!
-
Many thanks Coast - love the small-print lol

Important question folks....
I plan to drive down from Nottingham to Wokingham this evening, setting off around 6pm
Now.....do I go all the way down the M1 onto M25 then M4 - motorway all the way
Or.......do I risk the shorter route and come down past Towcester, oxford etc and risk the Chilterns - then M40 Motorway & dual carriageway (s)
My fate is in your hands

Been pretty light snow on and off for last couple of hours - had just about stopped but latest recon of lamp-post shows it pepping up again..
