Southern softies lolol. You can just picture the headline news on the london regionals in the morning.... "last night the wind upset a dustbin inShaftsbury".... Jeez, i'd hate to be a dustbin in Shaftsbury tonight!!!
What is it with you northerners anyway? I used to like Yorkshire people and other northerners. please don't make me change my mind.

Doesnt show how many ppl are in this thread, wind is picking up in S.W.now
Does it need to show how many? most are posting idiotic things anyway.
Here in Bognor the wind is strangely dropping at the same rate as the pressure is dropping. Still 4 hours before we are due to get anything of interest anyway.
Off to sleep while it is quiet and hope it stays quiet until a sensible hour of the morning. 10:00am would do!

We actually drove east and visited Climping beach. Would certainly be interesting to be there now. A wild night out there, just took the dog out to do her business and not a car or person to be seen
Ah, I like Climping beach, nice and wild on a stormy night. Hubby used to fish there and was a good place for sea bass. Mmmm, mouth watering now, bass with ginger and spring onion. Yummy.

VictorMeldrew. good news for you!!!! Posted on the severe weather thread just now.
BBC Lookeast late bulletin mentioned MetO considering increasing severe weather warning from amber to red for north Norfolk.

Soooo, do what does everyone think. Will the storm intensify and the winds get stronger, will whats predicted at the moment happen, or will the forecast get better. Are we in for any last minute change???
If the professionals aren't sure then none of us really have any idea either.

Oh noooo! This can't happen - I really hope that chair is okay.
I just hope all the other chairs outside people's Southern England gardens will take care out their - it could become very windy indeed, although I wouldn't be surprised if there was some sort of TV news report about garden chairs getting knocked out by this storm...
Oh don't worry too much. My pet plastic chairs are safely tucked up in a nice warm bed in the greenhouse. Some of us have compassion for our garden furniture you know! .

Itv west country weather said possible 90mph winds in west country tonight? I thought this storm was downgraded?! It makes you wonder what they had originally thought this storm might have turned into....Currently in Exeter is is raining moderately/heavy and wow it feels very very mild, wind is almost non existent at the moment
Suspect that Very, very mild. it happened before the '87 storm and I am NOT saying this is another such storm, just that the warm air before hand could be a warning of trouble ahead.

Central belt of Scotland is c.1.5mn people, S/SE England is c.15mn people. Hence 10 times the interest, potential damage etc etc.Journalists will be journalists though.
I lived in the central belt of Scotland 45 years ago. has it really increased so dramatically as to catch up with the South East?
Oh dear, so sorry Jimmy, I misread your post! Blame it on tiredness and being a pensioner please. Also I would so much love to be back on the west coast of Scotland. one of the most scenic places in the world in my view.
And now I am compounding my error by going off topic. Sorry folks!

Callie said it perfectly
Perhaps because they are kids!

Storms need warm, moist air as fuel, and they typically draw that air in from the surrounding environment. Storms can draw in that air from all directions - even from the direction in which the storm is travelling..As the warm, moist air is pulled into a storm system, it leaves a low-pressure vacuum in its wake. The air travels up through the storm cloud and helps to fuel it. The updrafts in the storm, however, quickly carry the air upward, and when it reaches the top of the cloud mass, this warm moist air gets spit out at the top. This air is sent rolling out over the big, anvil-shaped head of the thunderclouds or the roiling arms of hurricanes. From there, the air descends - drawn back toward lower altitudes by the very vacuum its departure created in the first place. What's important for our purposes is that descending air becomes warmer and drier (a good thing after its trip through the cloud, which involved cooling and condensation). Warm, dry air is relatively stable, and once it blankets a region, it stabilizes that air in turn. This causes the calm before a storm.
Thanks a lot for that really good explanation!

Yep, either this kicks up a notch or I can say " Another year another failure "
if not, I was wrong and I can enjoy the storm!
Don't worry Victor. Just watch out for tomorrow morning, I reckon you WILL get some fun then.

It is literally still outside. Wind is 0.1mph and gusts are 0.5mph. Very strange indeed.
I am amazed it is quiet in Wiltshire. Not sure what is happening but things are winding up fast here on the coast of West Sussex. Maybe because I am so close to the coast? less that half an hour ago was gusting up to 51knot, or almost 59 mph. Perhaps just a severe squall?
-
Starting to sound bad out there.
Sounding very bad outside here too Kate. It seems there are a lot of NIMBY's on here tonight that can't believe in something if it isn't in their back yard. or to be charitable, i guess it is just severe disappointment this isn't going further north?

#ukstorm Highest gust at 9pm: 67mph at Needles, Isle of Wight. 82mph gust observed at Ouessant, NW France
And with the low still west of the UK that is a little worrying!

It makes that lifeboat look like a toy in a bath tub! Those boats are big if you have ever stood by one! I know a couple of people who volunteer for the RNLI and those guys have simply unbelievable bravery! Hats off to them, I certainly couldn't do it.
Especially frightening that close to a solid rock groyne! I hope people remember this next time they see a lifeboat collection.

Why the hell did that boy go out in those conditions
Because he was 14 and thought it was exciting, as many people on here have been talking about!

The wind is really bad here, I can see the tree moving slightly
Not really funny when this is happening in Newhaven! Watch the video and have some respect for the emergency services!

Rapid rise in wind speed and gusts!

I think he meant the centre of the low, which technically is the eye but it isn't a hurricane so we wouldn't see one.
We had an eye on the '87 storm and that wasn't a hurricane. Came back on as the wind is stopping me sleeping anyway.

Rotten headache
urgh
Funny! Me too. Thundery I wonder?
-
Hang on to your hat - you may well need to eat it tomorrow
Funny it is all the ones who are not even due to experience this storm who keep wanting to downgrade it but the more knowledgeable METO still aren't downgrading.
Anyway, I was woken at 5:00am this morning by gusts up to 50 knots so I am off to get some sleep early as I expect if it comes off as planned then it will wake me soon enough.
Not talking about you of course Pixel.

Hi Jezzer.Which beach? Selsey or Bracklesham?
Here is a good link for you to monitor the wind gusts at Chichester harbour.

Click the more details tab and you will see the wind has dropped as the shipping forecast suggested before picking up from about now onward.
