  1. Doesnt show how many ppl are in this thread, wind is picking up in S.W.now

Does it need to show how many? most are posting idiotic things anyway.

Here in Bognor the wind is strangely dropping at the same rate as the pressure is dropping. Still 4 hours before we are due to get anything of interest anyway.

Off to sleep while it is quiet and hope it stays quiet until a sensible hour of the morning. 10:00am would do!

  2. We actually drove east and visited Climping beach. Would certainly be interesting to be there now. A wild night out there, just took the dog out to do her business and not a car or person to be seen

Ah, I like Climping beach, nice and wild on a stormy night. Hubby used to fish there and was a good place for sea bass. Mmmm, mouth watering now, bass with ginger and spring onion. Yummy.

  3. Oh noooo! This can't happen - I really hope that chair is okay. Posted Image

I just hope all the other chairs outside people's Southern England gardens will take care out their - it could become very windy indeed, although I wouldn't be surprised if there was some sort of TV news report about garden chairs getting knocked out by this storm...

Oh don't worry too much. My pet plastic chairs are safely tucked up in a nice warm bed in the greenhouse. Some of us have compassion for our garden furniture you know!Posted Image .

  4. Itv west country weather said possible 90mph winds in west country tonight? I thought this storm was downgraded?! It makes you wonder what they had originally thought this storm might have turned into....Currently in Exeter is is raining moderately/heavy and wow it feels very very mild, wind is almost non existent at the moment

Suspect that Very, very mild. it happened before the '87 storm and I am NOT saying this is another such storm, just that the warm air before hand could be a warning of trouble ahead.

  5. Central belt of Scotland is c.1.5mn people, S/SE England is c.15mn people. Hence 10 times the interest, potential damage etc etc.Journalists will be journalists though.

I lived in the central belt of Scotland 45 years ago. has it really increased so dramatically as to catch up with the South East?

Oh dear, so sorry Jimmy, I misread your post! Blame it on tiredness and being a pensioner please. Also I would so much love to be back on the west coast of Scotland. one of the most scenic places in the world in my view.

And now I am compounding my error by going off topic. Sorry folks!

  6. Storms need warm, moist air as fuel, and they typically draw that air in from the surrounding environment. Storms can draw in that air from all directions - even from the direction in which the storm is travelling..As the warm, moist air is pulled into a storm system, it leaves a low-pressure vacuum in its wake. The air travels up through the storm cloud and helps to fuel it. The updrafts in the storm, however, quickly carry the air upward, and when it reaches the top of the cloud mass, this warm moist air gets spit out at the top. This air is sent rolling out over the big, anvil-shaped head of the thunderclouds or the roiling arms of hurricanes. From there, the air descends - drawn back toward lower altitudes by the very vacuum its departure created in the first place. What's important for our purposes is that descending air becomes warmer and drier (a good thing after its trip through the cloud, which involved cooling and condensation). Warm, dry air is relatively stable, and once it blankets a region, it stabilizes that air in turn. This causes the calm before a storm.

Thanks a lot for that really good explanation!

  7. It makes that lifeboat look like a toy in a bath tub! Those boats are big if you have ever stood by one! I know a couple of people who volunteer for the RNLI and those guys have simply unbelievable bravery! Hats off to them, I certainly couldn't do it.

Especially frightening that close to a solid rock groyne! I hope people remember this next time they see a lifeboat collection.

  8. Hang on to your hat - you may well need to eat it tomorrow Posted Image

Funny it is all the ones who are not even due to experience this storm who keep wanting to downgrade it but the more knowledgeable METO still aren't downgrading.

Anyway, I was woken at 5:00am this morning by gusts up to 50 knots so I am off to get some sleep early as I expect if it comes off as planned then it will wake me soon enough.

Not talking about you of course Pixel.

Hi Jezzer.Which beach? Selsey or Bracklesham?

Here is a good link for you to monitor the wind gusts at Chichester harbour.

Click the more details tab and you will see the wind has dropped as the shipping forecast suggested before picking up from about now onward.
