  1. Snow showers galore today. Temp stayed around zero all day. Coldest day for 6 weeks ! C
  2. Evening. Heating back on . Icicles now showing on roof tops with blowing snow . Looks like a April of two halves' over here. First two weeks summer with a record 31 c recorded near Graz on Sunday, and now looks like winter for the remainder of the month. Current temp outside -0.5c. C
  3. Found this wonderful photo taken in the snowy 50s in Lech. Definitely old school Apre ! Love it. C
  4. Sunday recorded the highest April temp ever in the Villach area with a reading of 30.9 c. Today it has snow cover in the same location with a current temp of +1c at 500m asl. C
  5. After an unprecedented warm end to the season, the new trend to snow farming is now in full force at the moment. Remaining precious snow is ploughed into quite large piles and taken to about 2000m level where it is insulated for the rest of the summer with a layer of saw dust or wood chippings. Currently, that is happening right now on the mountain above the village. Its jut amazing what the piste workers can achieve. Its a growing practice to help preserve the ski-ing business against the fast growing temperature rises. Wood chip in abundance in these parts as well. Hopefully, a lot of snowfall coming towards weekend with much welcome lower temps to add to the piles . C C
  6. Mid- Spring and well on course for the warmest Spring ever in Austria. Today quite a few places broke 30c mark and recorded the warmest April Day on record. Just incredible spell of weather in these parts. River beds just a trickle and that mostly from melted snow. C
  7. Morning all. After a record warm first week to April in The Eastern Alps , snow and lower temps have returned to higher elevations. Still waiting to book a trip back to the UK but holding back as that chart from UKMO does not really float my boat for The British Isles. Those chill winds off the North Atlantic definitely not to my liking. I will just have to wait and see a big fat high sat over Northern England before booking a flight from SZG to MAN ! Having the thought of visiting a decent pub and sampling a pork pie remains very enticing though. What do you think of all those trough lines over North Africa. How the hell do they align them ? C
  8. Rush2019 Always first result I look for. I wish them well but would not like to be the manager if things don't go to plan. Nice to see Stockport County top of the table. Crewe Alex still just about in the hunt. Sad time for my old team Northwich Vics. Yes, keeping an eye on the weather, as soon as I see a big high sat over Northern England I will rush to book my flight from SZG to MAN ? as I am looking forward to a pint of Tim Taylors Landlord and a pork pie ! C
  9. alr1970 Wow. That is crazy and alarming. Time to build an Ark. Yet, so many droughts across the world as well. c
  10. Cheshire Freeze I do have some nice memories of playing cricket in the Cheshire/ N Staffs in spring when it was reasonably dry , sunny and warm . Going back a few decade though ! See March just gone the warmest globally on record. I am just wondering whether the UK is heading for one of the wettest past 9 months on record . C
  11. Rush2019 Was hoping to get to watch a few matches at the Moss Rose. Do you think they will get promoted again ? It looks like a few teams in with a chance. However, nice to see the support of Macc FC. The past few years has produced some nice weather at this time of the year in the NW but going by your reports on the site best stay away. I am a bit of a coward regarding wet and dullness ! Think , I will stay put for a bit longer. C
  12. Rush2019 I was expecting to make a Spring visit to the region but going by all reports think will have to delay. The figures for the past 9 months are really depressing , not only in the NW but across much of The British Isles. Is there a beacon of hope on the horizon ? Looking at the models , not much . I hate cold winds in Spring. My farmer friend up in Skipton tells me he has never seen the ground as saturated in all the many decades of his farming life. Just no sun. He cannot send his cattle out as they will just get bogged down and Lambs desperate for some warm sunshine on their backs. Conversely, over here in The Austrian Alps , we have JUST experienced the hottest first week of April in History with an abundance of spring . However, we have been warned of an impending cool spell next week with chill winds and snow above 1000m. C
  13. Following on from one of the warmest winters ever in these parts, spring continues with much the same as record heat this afternoon in many parts and 30c reached in Upper Austria. Austrians highest weather station at 3400m just recorded 6c and that has never ever been recorded in April before. C
  14. Late afternoon and temp of 29c in parts of the Tirol. Looks like records going again. This is the warmest start to any year on record. Crazy. C
  15. Weather-history Wow , glad I put off my spring visit back to UK. Completely different over here , almost drought conditions caused by a combination of only small snowfall amounts below 1500m during the past 2 months and persistent Fohn winds and sunshine with warmth well above normal early Spring levels. 30c in the forecast for some parts this weekend. Crazy, then forecast of snow and cold to return Mid - month. We will see ? I do hope you lot get a break soon for the many days of rainfall you have endured. Send some over here ! C
  16. The Sahara wind made the sky milky on Saturday over much of the Austrian Alps.Warm as well 18c at 4 pm . Snow melt gushing down the mountain streams currently. This is not right ! C
  17. @Blessed Weather Malcolm, I think this has been the warmest season in the Austrian Alps generally since I came out here in 2005. Locals think the warmest ever ! Sure France has done a lot better this season going by reports ? It has been hard to tap into any cold air source this season for the Eastern Alps Spring very early here with snow line beyond 1500m this morning. Cattle coming out as well to grass.
  18. Warm sunshine, fohn winds and desert dust has brought an abrupt end to the ski-ing season in these parts. Very little snow left above 1500m. Any ski-ing on offer is hard work with very soft snow piste and not that enjoyable. Overall, the past 3 months have been incredibly mild with record temps recorded in the mountains. The piste workers have worked wonders to keep the season going as long as it has. An early Easter was expected to provide an end of season bonus for the ski-ing business but sadly the punters have decided to stay away for the most part as a picnic in the forests sounds more attractive. I have postponed my trip back to blighty as the prospect of wind, rain and chill not my cup of tea. So hopefully early June for a visit ? I do miss the Great British pub, tv and food ( the best in the world by a country mile ). So boys and girls, thats me signing out on this thread until next season. C
  19. Morning all. Just looked at the models , so have decided to postpone my spring visit to the NW. Wind, rain and chill not my cup of tea. Warm sunshine, fohn winds and desert dust just abouit brought a early end to the snow over here with very little remaining below 1500m . A bit of disaster for the ski-ing industry who were expecting a good end to the season with Easter being early this year. Anyway, despite the horrid weather for you lot, you still have the best pubs and food in the world by a country mile on your door steps ( and tv ) which is crap over here. Hope to get over in June. C
  20. A sunless miserable day here in the Austrian Alps . Snowfall above 1200m. Drizzle and rain in the valley with mild conditions persistent. Crap winter really over here , March following the pattern of the warmest February ever in Austria with temps well above normal values. However, we do see the sunshine from time to time. Looking at your sunshine totals in the Northwest of England , almost non existent so far this year . Is it really that bad ? My farmer friend up near Skipton say its permanently wet and cloudy but frost free for the most part. In fact he also tells me he has never seen the ground so sodden. C
  21. I would not like to be on The Yorkshire coast this weekend with winds coming off The North Sea. Will feel even colder next week. There is a heck of a lot of snow to melt and transfer into the North Sea from Scandinavia over the coming weeks. Any winds originating from the East will make Eastern parts feel particularly cold. Models showing that now. Even today with coldest I have ever felt in my lifetime was playing cricket at Wetwang ( Yorkshire wolds ) in early April wearing 3 sweaters. Currently living at 1340m in the Austrian Alps and positively mild in comparison to ! Wetwang , frozen in time. Great place and happy memories. C
  22. How good and comprehensive are those newspaper reports compared to the inaccurate posts today on many media streams.
  23. Evening all , just looking at that latest chart for months end. Another pulse of warm air heading into The Eastern Alps. So far up to 25 th Feb , it is the warmest February ever in 257 years of records kept in Austria. Nearly a massive +6c above the 1991-20 average ( that is also a period of warm decades ) Some parts of Austria not seeing any snowfall at all this winter. Quite astonishing.
