  1. Hi Carinthian

I am travelling to Austria for a short ski trip a ski on Monday (21st March). I am flying to Innsbruck and have hired a car from the airport. I have booked accommodation in Alpbach...I noticed you recently have done some skiing there. Is the journey easy enough from the airport? Also as I have a car would you recommend any other near resorts for some skiing day trips?? I may as well make good use of the car! But I suppose it would be good to have a just one ski pass that covered where I visit! Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated....and I just hope that the snow stays as I see it is forecast to warm up over the next week :(

Hi  WW... Where are you staying in Alpbach ?  The new ski jewel covers the resorts main base in Inner Alpbach and you can ski both sides of the mountain in the Alpbachter Valley now linked by super fast gondala cars. Auffach, Nederau,Oberau  resorts are on the same lift pass with the biggest ski runs in Alpach with direct link to Auffach. I would suggest you do not need a car as a free bus takes you from Alpbach village to the gondola stations and same from Auffach to Niederau . All can be skied easily in 1 day with a bit of planning. I stayed in Inner Alpbach and had direct access to the pistes and lifts. Alpbach village is its self very Tirolean in appearance but no slopes in the village , but the main lifts are only a short stop away by car or free bus. The airport is about 60 mins drive and fairly direct to Alpbach . So yes, use your car to ski the Alpbach runs but use the gondala access to Auffach and free bus service to Niederau, although I think there is enough ski-ing directly on the Weidersberghorn. Its a very pretty ski region with some nice runs and mountain restaurants. Best in the sunshine, I am sure the runs will remain well serviced and intact even snow might not be in the main village as it is on a sunny shelf. Have a good one..

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I am staying at Gästehaus Gratlspitz which is in Alpbach village I think?

The price of hiring a car (100 euros) was cheaper than the cost of transfer from the airport...so I chose the car option . Just hoping that the SSW has an impact on European weather and cools Austria back down with some snow falling during our visit :) I would rather that than sun ha!!

Hi, as you have the car, you might as well use it to go to the lift stations as there is plenty of free parking by the lifts for the Weidersbergen Horn and Inner Alpbach, both a short drive away from your Hotel. I would suggest you use Inner Alpach as you can access both sides of the mountain and all runs using the cable cars with very little queues. A nice end of day drink at Joes Salette Bar ! Looking at the GFS longer term data, the high pressure to the north should maintain a colder flow over Austria. Recent snowfall should last on most of the runs and sunshine is a pleasure to ski in spring. Enjoy your ski-ing and snow fix.
