  1. Thanks BG It was -25C when I took that photo - on an island inside the Arctic Circle in Nunavut, Canada, in February. The sea was frozen and I was taken on a snowmobile ride out to an iceberg trapped in the sea ice. Amazing sight. The Inuit lady was actually the front office manager for the "hotel" where I was staying. It only had six rooms; you shared rooms with strangers and there were no en-suite facilities. And there were polar bears all round the island. Sadly the skin of a dead polar bear drying over the outside bannisters of the hut next to the hotel was the only one I saw, although next day when I was taken seal hunting (thankfully the Inuit guide never caught one) there were polar bear tracks everywhere. Very scary when a glove I had taken off was blown out of my grip while I was taking pictures while being towed on a kamatiq (sled) behind the snowmobile, and the guide left me in the middle of nowehere for 20 minutes while he went back to find it! Anyway, I digress. Back to lamppost watching...
  2. Hi Bunny Girl - good to see you on here again. Have you been hiding so far this winter? This is what I posted earlier: Posted Today, 14:24 No snow here yet, but I am happy as I had a delivery this morning...a brand new Nikon D3200 SLR camera with an 18-15mm lens! I won it recently in the Thailand Throught the Lens photo competition (http://uk.blog.touri...e-lens-winners/). Just need the snow to practice taking pictures on it, ready for the trip to Thailand next month that I also won. As I said, I need to get out and about to take some pictures with it. Fingers crossed we get some real snow here in South Essex from the fabled Thames Streamer or Sunday's predicted front.
  3. Same here in Shoebury. Thank god, after waiting all day it finally arrived about an hour ago. Too late to try out my new camera on but, hopefully more over the weekend so I can get snapping.
  4. I wanna try my new camera out in the snow! Not even seen a single flake here. Waaaaaah... *Goes off to find toys to put in pram ready to throw out tomorrow if the promised snowfest doesn't reach here*

  6. In case no-one has noticed, Netweather broke the record for most users online again tonight - 2,736 - just over half an hour ago. I have a funny feeling that could be broken again in coming days if this cold spell continues, and especially if the front delivers tomorrow. Well done Netweather
  7. Great pics there, Tilly. Beautiful snowflakes - and I bet you were really chuffed to have your photo on the telly.
  8. Take a video or snapshot of it should it come on again, Tilly, so that you can share it with us. Would love to see it
  9. Easties/Staying the Same looks the form horse now. It has come from behind and is galloping past Westies on the rails, with Chiono in the saddle and Steve Murr as trainer. South of the Thames trailing well back. Just need to clear that final hurdle now, the 12Z... Oops, sorry Steve, you went with the rank outsider. No matter. Chiono just needs to start using his whip...
  10. Evens for me, Paul - the eternal optimist that I am... Did anyone notice on the Shipping forecast that was posted on here a little while ago that the winds were progged to go south east for the Thames sector? If that happens, those snow showers will undoubtedly start to swing round and come right up the Estuary. We could get an early present on both sides of the river if that happens.
  11. Very nice, too. I use mine mostly for travelling so I have to go with lighter lenses as those are so heavy. I have the 100-400 but never take it away these days. Instead I have the 70-300 DO lens, which I must admit is a compromise and not as sharp. Plus I have the 17-40, which I generally keep on a 40D. I may just take the 5D MkII in future so that I can carry a heavier lens. But airlines are getting much tougher on cabin baggage, especially the low-cost ones. Anyway, I hope we will get some snow here in South East Essex in the next couple of days so that I can go out and do a bit of local snapping. Looking at that shower train out in the North Sea, it looks like you are going to get a lot more snow in your neck of the woods. As Shrimper has said, the wind direction needs to shift for us to get it here. But if we do get any it will definitely settle. My car is still coated with the little bit we had around 8am. It is times like this I wish I had put my weather station up. I have had one for about six or seven years, but never got it out of its box because it will have to go on the roof - and I hate heights! Perhaps climbing onto a frosty roof is not a good idea at the moment. But I am itching to get it working. Wonder if I can persuade anyone to do it for me...?
  12. Some lovely shots there, frosty. I see you use a 5D MkII. I upgraded my trusty 5D to one of those last summer - great camera. Is the the 24-105mm lens you used with it? I used to only use prime lenses with my pre-digital T90s, but switched to zooms as the quality improved and that is my stock lens now. With some others, of course.
  13. Just started snowing very lightly here in Shoebury. Finally!
  14. According to the Daily Mail, today is Blue Monday - the most depressing day of the year (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2262069/Blue-Monday-Today-depressing-day-year-window-walk-help.html). However, according to other sites it is the third Monday in January, which is next Monday. So there's plenty of time to get even more down about the snow/sleet/rain/drizzle/snizzle* (*delete as appropriate)!
  15. Isn't that what is headed this way, though...? Especially if the whole Low system is moving south.
  16. If the main front is coming through slower than expected and the whole system is moving south, wouldn't that mean the warm sector is more likely to be pushed further south as the afternoon progresses and any precipitation for us here in the marginal Thames corridor will become snow rather than rain? The light snow/sleet has stopped here now.
  17. Either a seagull with dandruff is flying overhead or it has just started snowing very lightly here in Shoeburyness. We are probably too low and close to the Thames to keep any snow today, but fingers crossed for the wrap-around tonight...
  18. Roll up, roll up... Last chance to enter this competition. Entries must be in by midnight tomorrow (Monday February 28). Dig out those ice and snow photos and give it a go. Someone has to win - and it could be you.
  19. Got some good snow and ice pictures from this winter’s cold snaps? Or maybe even some from a previous winter in the UK or skiing holiday abroad? Then why not enter them into a winter photo competition being held by quarterly magazine tlm – the travel & leisure magazine. The magazine has been running a two-part competition since the beginning of the year. Entries submitted during January have been whittled down to 12 finalists, and a public vote is being held until the end of February to choose the winning picture. You can view the finalists here: http://on.fb.me/tlm_jancomp_finalists And if you want to add your vote, just click on http://bit.ly/tlm_jan_photocomp_voting If you missed out on the January competition, there is still time to enter your favourite winter photos for the February one, by going to http://bit.ly/tlm_feb_photocomp Entries close at midnight on February 28. The 12 finalists for February will then be chosen by a public vote, with the winner being selected from the final 12 in another public vote. Entries for February can be viewed on a gallery here: http://on.fb.me/tlm_feb_photogallery The winning January and February photos will each receive a copy of the Insight Guide to Travel Photography, worth £14.99. There are also other prizes to be won in general competitions on the tlm website (http://www.tlm-magazine.co.uk) - and another photography cometition is due to be launched at the end of March, with a camera expected to be the star prize. In case you wonder how I know, I'm the editor! Good luck everyone.
  20. I just got backed to Shoebury after driving from NW Kent, and the roads were just wet everywhere with light snow in the air...until I got within a couple of miles of home. Suddenly the snow got heavier and there was also much more laying alongside and on the road. Then the last road I take from the Angel pub (towards Wakering, for those who know it, and a single carriageway country road for those who don't) was almost closed by snowdrifts. Some were right up to the tops of my wheels with tracks running through the drifts made by previous cars. Had to take it really slowly along the last bit, and almost hit a wall when I turned right and the wheels just carried on straight - even though I was only going 5-10mph. Gave me a real scare but rather than brake I let the car decelerate and thankfully it got traction just in time and I managed to steer it left and missed the wall. Thank god for front-wheel drive! Everything is dripping but still lots of snow here. A good 4-5 inches I would say. And it is snowing again. Edit: now stopped again. D'oh
